I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Theophilus Turner, but I think he may be a 1st cousin (many times removed).

Theophilus Turner was born ca 1813/14 per his age on the 1850 census (36). He was born in Marion District, South Carolina (per 1850 census). He is a proven son of William Turner and Catherine Martin per an 1855 deed from father to son.

Theophilus seems to be with his parents for the 1820 census aged under 10 (ca 1810/20). He may be home in 1830 but listed in the 10-14 age group (ca 1815/20). Seems everyone was a little off in William's household that year.

Theophilus Turner married Martha --- before ca 1837, presumably in Marion Dist., SC. She was born ca 1813/14 per her age in 1850 (36), born in Marion District. I don't know her maiden name.

Theophilus Turner was listed on the 1840 census in Marion District, SC. His brother Martin M. Turner was just two houses away.

On 13 Mar 1849 Lucy Lee deeded two cows and calves to Theophilus Turner for $15.00. She signed with a mark before S. A. Hairgrove. Peter Caulder also signed (as a witness, presumably). (Marion Co., SC Deed Book V page 10).

Theophilus Turner and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC two houses from his father William Turner: # 1264/1269 Theopholus Turner 36 Farmer, born Marion; Martha 36; Mary 13; David 9.

On 5 Sep 1855 William Turner gave 58 acres to his son Theophilus Turner. Witnesses were James W. Bass and S. Fore. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book W page 501).

Theophilus and family moved to Webster Co., GA in the 1850's. His 1st cousin John Turner (c1805) was already living there and may have induced him to go. His 1st cousin Charles Powers was in neighboring Stewart Co., GA at that time as well.

They are listed on the 1860 census in Webster. Cousin John Turner is there too, but not listed nearby. W. S. Turner (c1836) is next door. I think he is their son, but I'm not positive: Southern District, Preston PO, # 353/353 T. Turner 45 male, Farmer $1400/1000 SC; Martha 45 NC; David 18 Farm Labor SC; Stephen Lane 18 Farm Labor SC; John Parker 18 SC.

John Parker (c1842) is Theophilus's nephew, a son of his sister Catherine Turner Parker. Stephen Lane is also from Marion Dist., SC but I don't know how he is related. He is a son of Alexander Lane and Lucinda Blackman. He did marry into the family after 1860 by marrying Lincy Hussey, granddaughter of Milly Turner Hussey.

Their son David Turner died on 21 Jul 1862 of Typhoid Fever at the hospital in Danville, Virginia. He was a Private in Company K, 17th Georgia. His record showed that his personal effects were given to "his mother" though her name wasn't mentioned. She must have traveled to Danville to see him in the hospital, or else his effects were delivered to her back home. Her other son William had died just a month before, also of Typhoid Fever.

Theophilus is living alone on the 1870 census in Webster Co., GA. Martha must have died in the 1860's. In 1870 there is a house keeper in the same house with him, but listed with a different family number: No Township, Preston PO, # 918/1173 Theoffiles Turner 55 mulatto, Farm Laborer $0/700 SC; # 918/1174 Sarah Barrentine (or Barrister) 27 white, keeping house GA.

Theophilus Turner married Frances (---) before ca 1872, presumably in Webster Co., GA. She was born ca 1844/45 in Georgia (both per the 1880 census). I don't know her maiden name.

They are on the 1880 census in Webster County: 1092 Dist G.M. Vil. of Weston, # 25/25 Theophilus Turner, mulatto, 66 Laborer, SC-SC-SC; Francis, white, 35 wife, Keeping House GA-GA-GA; Howard mulatto 8 son GA-SC-GA; William H. mulatto 4 son.

I wasn't able to find Theophilus or Frances on the 1900 census. I found son Howard in neighboring Stewart Co., GA that year. There was a William Turner in Webster in 1900 who could be their son, but his age and middle initial are off.

Children of Theophilus Turner and Martha (---) and Frances (---). Theophilus and Martha had two children at home on the 1850 census: Mary (c1837) and David (c1841). The 1840 census indicates a son born ca 1835/40. I thought that might be David if he was born in the year 1840, but I think it might be William S. Turner (c1836) instead. He wasn't listed in 1850 but was next door to Theophilus in 1860. I don't have absolute proof that he is their son, but I'm including him as such anyway based on proximity and the 1840 census.

Theophilus and his 2nd wife Frances had two children per the 1880 census: Howard and William.
