I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Martin M. Turner, but I think he is a cousin to some degree.

There were three men of this name in old Marion District, South Carolina. The oldest moved away pretty early, but the other two remained. They were almost exactly the same age as each other, and one married an Eliza, the other an Elizabeth. One has a "W" middle initial, the other an "M" which is often misread as a "W" so confusion is almost certain. The older man was Martin Turner (c1790). His parents aren't identified. The next oldest is Martin W. Turner (c1816), a proven son of William Turner and Catherine Martin. The youngest is Martin M. Turner (c1820), discussed on this page, a proven son of Martha Turner.

Martin W. Turner lived in what later became Moody Township, just east of Catfish Creek, probably about halfway between the creek and the Temperance Hill community. Martin M. Turner lived in Kirby Township (now Dillon County), just on the opposite side of Catfish Creek, not far from Martin W. Turner.

Special thanks to Debbie Smith and Tonya Perry for data shared on this family.

Martin M. Turner was born ca 1819/20 per his age on the 1850 census (30). His 1860, 1870 and 1880 census all gives ages that show him a little older, being 45 in 1860 (ca 1814/15), 54 in 1870 (ca 1815/16), and 65 in 1880 (ca 1814/15). His tombstone has 1812 as his birth date. In any event he was born between 1810 and 1820 for certain. He was born in Marion District, South Carolina according to the 1850 census. I don't know what his "M" initial stands for. It is interpreted as "W" on some record transcripts, but it very clearly written as "M" on the 1880 census.

He is a proven son of Martha Turner (1784/90). His father was reputed to be Needham Watson according to an 1860 court record (more on that later).

Martin seems to be with his mother for the 1820 census age under 10, (born ca 1810/20). His mother isn't listed in 1830 but she appears to be with her father Reuben Turner that year, and Martin seems to be there too, aged 10-15 (c1815/20).

Martin Turner married Eliza ---  before ca 1839 in Marion Dist., SC. She was born ca 1819/20 per her age in 1850 (30). Her tombstone gives her birth date as 1816. I don't know what her maiden name is. The death certificate of their son Kenneth lists his parents as "Martin Turner" and "Eliza Turner." Daughter Martha's also gives her mother as "Eliza Turner." Since it is supposed to be the mother's maiden name was she also a Turner? Listing the mother's married name is a common death certificate error, so I don't know if that is the case here or not. If she is a Turner, I don't know who her parents were.

There is a Martin Turner listed on the 1840 census in Marion District, but that is almost certainly the other Martin. This Martin seems to be home with his mother Martha for the 1840 census.

Martin Turner and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, living next door to my ancestor Daniel Turner (c1796), relationship to each other is unknown. They were somewhere in Kirby Township: # 1188/1193, Martin Turner 30 white, Labourer born Marion; Eliza 30; Rebecca 11; Mary 8; Kinian 4; John 1/12.

Martin Turner and family may have moved somewhat by the time of the 1860 census. By this time, none of their neighbors from 1850 were anywhere nearby. This could be a result of the census taker's path through the county and not an indication of them moving. But since they didn't own land, it is possible they moved from place to place. They were not listed near any other Turner families. Their neighbor on one side was John O. Lane and Benjamin Bailey on the other. They were still in Kirby Township, based on the various neighbors that I'm familiar with: Gum Swamp PO, # 780/780 Martin Turner, 45 white, Farmer Laborer, $0/600 SC; Eliza 34; M. T. Turner 14 female; K. Turner 10 male; Martha 14*; A. C. Turner 1/12 female. (* Martha is listed as 14, but should only be 4.)

In 1860, Martin M. Turner (and his cousin Martin W. Turner) both appeared in the Marion District Court records disputing the Sheriff and Tax Collector who were trying to collect "Capitation" Tax from those who were "Free Colored". They both stood up for their rights as Free white citizens, and that they were not subject to such a tax. Several affidavits were then filed by several upstanding "white" citizens on their behalf, and these records are quite informative, and I'll give them here. Only one pertained to Martin M. Turner, but several were there for his cousin Martin W. Turner. Both were listed as Martin W. Turner though, but it is clear from the lineage given that they were for two different people.

The statement was made on 9 Aug 1860 in the case of Martin W. Turner (c1820) vs. N. C. McDuffie, Sheriff of Marion District. Declaration in Prohibition. A statement filed by John Blackman Sr and James Lane Sr (both relatives of mine by the way) said this about Martin:

"Before me George M. Fairlee, Magst - come John Blackman Sr and James Lane Sr and upon being sworn says they knew John Turner alias Jack Turner and he was a free man so treated and received that he was a mulatto one half white and one half colored, that Patience Turner his wife passed and was received as a free white woman not having more than one fourth negro blood. That Reuben Turner was one of their children and passed and was received as a free white man, that Reuben Turner married Dolly Martin a free white woman without the least mixture of African blood, that Martha Turner alias Patty Turner was one of their children, who lived passed and was received as a free white woman that Martin Turner who is her son is the reported son of Needham Watson who was a white man without any mixture. That they deponents know that Martin Turner attended school with the children of the neighborhood, mustered and performed road duty ever since he was old enough. That he has always behaved himself in a respectable and orderly manner and that they have always received him as a white man at their house and so treated and dealt with him, and that he bears in his neighborhood (in which we live) a good character, is quiet, peaceable, sober and industrious." Signed John Blackman, James (x) Lane. Sworn before George M. Fairlee, Magst 9 Aug 1860 (From "Marion County Court Records, Court of Common Pleas 1788 to June 1861" Extracted by Lucille Utley and Transcribed by Teri Dalrymple. Three Rivers Historical Society)

The result of the above was that on 31 Oct 1860, the judge ordered that the Sheriff restrain from enforcing the "execution against Martin W. Turner as a free person of color for a capitative tax until first Monday in Nov. next." I don't know what happened in November "next", but there was no other record of this in the published court minutes.

See my Ethnic origins pages and my Race Codes pages for an explanation of "Free Colored" and so forth.

For the Civil War, one of the Martin Turner's enlisted in Company D, 25th Regiment Infantry as a Private. He was listed by Sellers as "Martin Turner", and he said he "died since the war", meaning he was dead before 1898-1901 when his book was being written.  (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 635).

I'm not sure if the Civil War record pertains to this or to the other Martin, but since this one was slightly younger, I'd say it was him. If his "race" was a factor, it didn't stop him from serving in the Confederate cause. In the same Company with him were Joel Turner and Willis Turner.

For the 1870 Census, Martin Turner was listed in Kirby Township. He wasn't listed near any other Turners, though there were several elsewhere in the same Township: Kerby's Township, Cat Fish PO, # 202/227 Martin Turner 54 white Farm Labor, $0/0 SC; Eliza 45 farm labor; Martha 14 Farm Labor; Elsy 8 farm labor.

They were sill in Kirby Township for the 1880 census. This time, they were listed fairly close to some other Turners, including their son Kenneth T. Turner. This is the first (and only) census to show this particular set of Turners with a race code of "M", meaning Mulatto. (See notes above on the issue of "Race"). In all the earlier census records, they were listed as White. Also of particular interest is that on this census, Martin reported his father was born in NC. Needham Watson was indeed born in North Carolina. Eliza reported her mother also born in NC: Kirby Township, # 250/250 Martin M. Turner, mulatto, 65 married, laborer on farm, born SC-NC-SC; Eliza 54 mulatto, wife, married SC-SC-NC; Katherin mulatto, 16 daughter, SC-SC-SC.

According to their tombstones at the Hulon Cemetery (Dillon County), both Martin and Eliza died on 4 Jan 1890. His stone says: Martin M. Turner 1812 - 4 Jan 1890 and hers says: Eliza Turner 1816 - 4 Jan 1890. Their birth years don't agree with any of their census entries. I wonder if these stones were placed at the time of their death, or many years later. There is no way to be sure. However, it is not uncommon for tombstones to have a wrong birth year, in fact it is very common. (Thanks to Tonya Perry for the cemetery data).

Children of Martin M. Turner and Eliza (---). Martin and Eliza had at least six children, proven by the 1850 through 1880 census records.

  1. Rebecca Turner (c1839)
  2. Mary T. Turner (c1842)
  3. Kenneth T. Turner (1848)
  4. John Turner (c1850)
  5. Martha Turner (c1856)
  6. Elsey Catherine Turner (c1860)

Rebecca Turner was born ca 1838/39 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was home with her parents for the 1850 census, but gone by 1860, so she probably had married or died by then.

Mary T. Turner was born ca 1841/42 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was home with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census, but gone by 1870, so she probably had married or died by then.

Kenneth T. Turner was born June 1848 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). I don't know what his "T" initial stands for. He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

Kenneth Turner married Amanda Caulder ca 1867/68 in Marion County, SC. Amanda was born 25 Jun 1853 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist., SC. I don't who her parents were. I tried to find her on the 1860 census with no luck. Her maiden name is proven by the death certificate of her daughters Minnie and Dannie. The death certificates of daughters Carrie and Inez show her to be a Lane. I was unable to find an Amanda Lane on the 1860 census either. Son Richard's death certificate showed Amanda to be a Hulon. I believe that Amanda is a child of Lucy Lee (c1820), apparently a single mother. Lucy also seems to be the mother of a few other children including Joseph Caulder (1848-1918).

They were listed on the 1870 census in Marion County in Moody Township residing with Lucy Lee, age 50 (probably Amanda's mother). Their post office was listed as "Catfish" so they were probably not far from where his parents lived, just the other side of Catfish Creek: Moody's Township, Cat Fish PO, # 23/23 Lucy Lee 50 Farm Labor, $0 / 150 SC; Ken Turner 23 Farm Labor; Joe Turner 21 Farm Labor; Amanda 17 Farm Labor; Charlotte 9/12 born Dec.

I tried to locate Lucy Lee on the 1860 and 1850 census, but didn't find her listed unless she is the Lucy Calder age 28 in 1850 which could be the case. Lucy was listed on the 1880 census two houses from Kenneth and Amanda Turner, and listed as "single". Interestingly, she was also listed (as the Turners also were that year) with a race code of "M" (Mulatto), though "white" in 1870.

Also with Kenneth in 1870 was Joe Turner. I'm not sure at all which Joseph Turner this is. This is probably Joseph C. Caulder (1848-1918), a son of Lucy Lee, and a brother to Amanda.

Kenneth Turner and family were listed on the 1880 census in Marion County, in Kirby Township. Lucy Lee was just two houses away: Kirby Township, # 241/241 Kinneth Turner, mulatto, 32 married SC-SC-SC; Amanda 27 wife; Sharlot 10 daughter; Elen 8 daughter; Minnie 7 daughter, Morgan, 6 son; Boston 5 son; Mollie 4 daughter; Flanie 3 son; Lelan 2 daughter; Jessie 2/12 (born April) son. Everyone was listed as mulatto.

The family was still in Kirby Township for the 1900 census. No other Turner families were nearby. This census showed that Amanda had 19 children, 17 of which were still living. While that number is extraordinarily high, it seems actually too low, considering the children listed in the 1880 census, plus these here make for a total of 22 known children. It is possible that some of these might have been grandchildren instead, or nieces and nephews: Kirby Township, # 97/100 Kenneth Turner, head, June 1848 51, married 32 years, SC-SC-SC Farmer; Amanda wife Jun 1863 46 19 children born, 17 living; Boyd son May 1878 22; Molly Dau. Apr 1879 21; Lula dau. Feb 1881 19; Carrie, dau Sep 1882 17; Leasy? dau Oct 1883 16; Nezzie dau Jan 1885 15; Floyd son Dec 1885 14; Danie dau Nov 1887 12; Edora dau Jun 1889 10; Richard son Mar 1891 9; Warley son Nov 1892 7; Curley son May 1896 4; Gaddy son May 1897 3.

They were listed on the 1910 census in Marion County in Kirby Township. They were next door to widow Minnie Turner Turner, Kenneth's daughter:

They must have moved over the line into Dillon after 1910 (Dillon was formed in 1910 from upper Marion), for Amanda died on 7 Jan 1916 in Dillon County, and is buried at the Turner Cemetery there. It is possible they didn't move at all, but were just buried in Dillon County.

Kenneth was living with son Richard Turner for the 1920 census in Marion County in Moody Township.

Kenneth T. Turner died on 1 Jul 1924 in Dillon County as is also buried at the Turner Cemetery.

John Turner was born ca 1850 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). He was home with his parents for the 1850 census. He wasn't with them in 1860 or listed elsewhere as far as I could find, so probably had died by then.

Martha Turner was born ca 1855/56 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was home with her parents for the 1860 and 1870 census, but was gone by 1880, so probably had married or died by then.

I found her death certificate accidentally while looking for another Martha. It shows that Martha Snipes died on 24 Sep 1926 in Dillon Co., SC and is buried at the Hulon Cemetery. Her husband's name was not given. Her parents were listed as Martin Turner and Eliza Turner. Elmo Owens of Latta was the informant. It gave her birth date as 15 Jun 1844 which is about 10 years too old, or then again it could be correct for it matches her age on the 1860 census, but not the 1870 census.

I tried to find more about Martha but didn't have much luck. I did find a Martha D. wife of Christopher C. Snipes on the 1910 census. They were only married 3 years then, a 2nd marriage for both. She had been previously married to a Mr. Norman or Dorman. I don't know if this is the same Martha or not.

Elsey Catherine Turner was born ca 1860 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was home with her parents for the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census.
