I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Robert Turner, but I think he may be an uncle or at least a 1st cousin (many times removed). Robert Turner was born ca 1793/94 per his age on the 1850 census (56). He was 71 in 1860 (born ca 1788/89). I don't know which entry is more accurate. His 1850 entry showed him born in Marion District, South Carolina. At the time he was born, Marion was still part of Georgetown District. Robert Turner is a proven son of Reuben and Dorothy Turner as named in an 1814 deed. Robert would have been about six years old for the 1800 census. He was probably one of the six free colored persons in his father's household that year. In 1810 Robert would have been about 16. His father Reuben had two boys at home age 16-25 (ca 1784/94), one of whom is probably Robert. On 30 Oct 1814 Reuben Turner and his wife Dorothy Turner gave a horse, and several other items to their "son" Robert Turner. This deed makes Robert Turner a proven son of Reuben. Reuben and Dorothy both signed with marks. Witnesses were John (X) Martin and Martha Meloy and John Blackman. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F page 231). Robert would have been about 26 for the 1820 census. His father had an apparent son aged 16-25 (ca 1794/1804) which is close, but might not be him. At that age Robert could have been living somewhere else then. He might have been married already by 1820, but he wasn't listed as a head of household in Marion Dist., SC for the 1820 census. Robert Turner married Rebecca (---) sometime before 1830, perhaps before 1820. She was born ca 1793/94 per her age on the 1850 census (56). I don't know her maiden name. Robert Turner is listed on the 1830 census in Marion District. This census is alphabetical so neighbors can't be determined. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Marion Dist., SC pg 48 Robert Turner 0110010000000-3320010000000 Slaves=000000-000000 Analysis: 1 Male 30-39 (1790/1800) Robert Turner (c1794) 1 male 10-14 (1815/1820) Son? (1825/30) 0 Slaves On 23 Jan 1837, Robert Turner was named in the Estate records for John McCall, Merchant, as having notes due to the estate. This does not imply a relationship, just that Robert owned money to John McCall. (Marion Co, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 pg 230 as published in the Pee Dee Queue) Robert Turner was listed on the 1840 census in Marion District. Robert was on the same page with Theophilus Turner and his brother Martin Turner (c1816), but not listed near them. Robert Turner's neighbors on either side included James H. Bryant and John Turbeville and one more on each side were J.M. Bryant and Wikuner (Wickham) Watson. This probably puts him in the area near Ebenezer Church. These are not the same neighbors he had in 1850, so he apparently moved around a little bit (he didn't own property as far as I know). 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Marion Dist., SC pg 141 Robert Turner 0100000100000-1310000100000 Slaves=000000-000000 Analysis: 1 Male 50-59 (1780/1790) Robert Turner (c1794) 1 male 5-9 (1830/1835) Jesse Turner (c1834) son 1 Female 50-59 (1780/1790) Rebecca (---) Turner (c1794) wife 1 female 10-14 (1825/1830) Daughter? (1830/35) --> gone by 1850 1 female 0-4 (1835/1840) Drusilla Turner (c1835) daughter 0 Slaves Robert Turner and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC. He was listed next to Joel Turner, who was next to Rachel Turner. Other neighbors were known residents of Kirby Township, so they were somewhere on the west or south side of Catfish Creek: # 1245/1250 Robert Turner 56 Farmer born Marion; Rebecca 56; Jesse 16 Farmer; Drucilla 15. The nearest landowners in 1850 were Robert Hussey (three houses away), and William Dew (c1802) also three houses away. Robert Hussey was Robert Turner's 1st cousin. Rebecca (---) Turner seems to have died in the 1850's and Robert married again to Mary (---) before 1860. She was born ca 1811/12 per her age on the 1860 census (48). I don't know her maiden name. They are listed on the 1860 census in Marion District, next to Joel Turner on one side, and Robert Turner (c1825) on the other. Willis Turner was just three houses away, and Martin M. Turner was not far distant either. William Dew (c1802), a near neighbor from 1850 was two houses away in 1860: Oak Grove PO, # 1350/1337 Robt Turner 71 mulatto, Farmer $0 / 200 born SC; Mary 48 white. I wasn't able to find Robert or Mary on the 1870 census. They may have both died in the 1860's, or perhaps only he died and she remarried someone yet unidentified. |
Children of Robert Turner and Rebecca (---) and Mary (---). Robert Turner and Rebecca had numerous children according to the 1830 through 1850 census records. Unfortunately, most of them are currently unidentified. Only two children were still home with them by the 1850 census, and no other sources have been located to prove any additional children. It doesn't appear that Robert and his 2nd wife Mary had any children together.

Unknown Son (1815/20) Robert Turner had an apparent son this age. He was home with him in 1830 aged 10-14 (c1815/20), but gone by 1840. James Turner (c1817/18) is a possible match, but I have no evidence that he is Robert's son, but he does fit. |
Unknown Daughter (1815/20) Robert Turner had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1830 aged 10-14 (c1815/20). She was gone by 1840 so perhaps married or dead by then. |

Jesse Turner was born ca 1833/34 in Marion Dist., SC. He seems to be with his parents for the 1840 census aged 5-9 (1830/35), and still home in 1850 ("Jesse" age 16). Jesse married Mary Jane Powers between 1850 and ca 1852 in Marion Dist., SC. She was born June 1835 (per 1900 census) in Marion Dist., SC (per 1870 census) or in NC according to other census records I wasn't able to find Jesse Turner on the 1860 census. They are in nearby Georgetown County for the 1870 census: Pee Dee Township, Georgetown PO, # 609/643 Jesse Turner, 36 white, laborer, born Marion, SC; Mary Jane 35 Keeping House; Maria 17; Gurley 11; Hughee 9; Mary 7; Hannah 5 born Carvers Bay, SC; Jesse 2; Thomas Garrett 19 laborer born Marion. There is a T. W. Garrett age 26 a few houses away. Is that Thomas Garrett who was living with them back in 1870? Jesse Turner died sometime between 1880 and 1900. Mary is listed on the 1900 census in neighboring Horry County: Greensea Township, # 275/275 Evander Turner Head Feb 1875 25 SC-SC-SC; Anna sister Sep 1852 47; Beckey sister Aug 1877 22; Mary J. Mother June 1835 64, widowed 3 children born 3 living. Mary was still in Horry for the 1910 census: Green Sea Township # 112/114 Evander Turner, Head, 36 SC-SC-NC; Annie, sister 57; Mary J. Mother 74 widowed, 9 children born, 7 living, NC-SC-NC. Mary Jane Powers Turner died on 5 Aug 1915 in Horry. She is buried at the Greensea Cemetery. |
Drusilla Turner was born ca 1834/35 in Marion Dist., SC. She seems to be with her parents in 1840 aged under 5 (ca 1835/40), and she was home in 1850 ("Drucilla" age 15), but gone by 1860. |
