I don't know how I'm related to James Turner, but probably a cousin at least. Special thanks to Joyce Braswell and Melanie Kelley for data shared with me on this family. James Turner was born ca 1817/18 per his age on the 1850 census (32). His 1860 and 1870 census entries give his age as 40 and 50, giving a birth date of ca 1819/20. He was born in Marion Dist., SC. I don't know who his parents were, but it seems very likely he is a descendant of John Turner and Patience Smith of Catfish. (James and Judith were members of Catfish Creek Baptist Church according to Melanie Kelley.) James would have been about two years old by the time of the 1820 census, so he should be enumerated in the under 10 age group (born 1810/20). Only two Turner households had apparent sons that age in Marion District (excluding those who lived in what is now Florence County): John Turner (1765) had two (both positively identified) and Martha Turner (1784/90) who had three, only one identified. In 1830 James would have been about 10 to 12 years old, so depending on his actual birth date he could be in the 10-14 age group (born ca 1815/20) or in the 5-9 group (ca 1820/25). Reuben Turner (1760/65) had one boy 5-9 and one 10-14 with him one of whom is identified, the other not; Robert Turner (c1794) had one 5-9 and one 10-14, neither identified; and William Turner (c1768) also had one of each, both identified. In 1840 James Turner would have been 20-22 years old, so he should be in the 20-29 age group. He is old enough to be a head of household but wasn't listed as such, so he was probably still home with his parents. Martha Turner (1784/90) had an apparent son this age, but he is already identified. Census analysis of the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census is inconclusive as to who James's parents were. James Turner married Judith Powers before ca 1843 in Marion Dist., SC. Judith was born ca 1819/20 per her age in 1850 (30). She was born in Marion Dist., SC (per 1850 census). I don't know who her parents were. Her maiden name is proven by the death certificates of some of her children, though some others list her as a Powell instead. The names are similar but not variants of the same name, so which is correct? Both surnames are found in Marion District, but the Powers and Turner families were known to be associated in other cases (Sarah Turner, daughter of John Turner Sr. married John G. Powers in 1813). There were later connections as well. I'm not aware of any Powell - Turner connections. A little census analysis may help identify Judith's parents. In 1820 there were seven Powell households in Marion Dist., SC, but only four Powers. I ignored the Powells since Powers seems more likely: Archibald, George, James and W. John Powers. Of those, Archibald, James and W. John had daughters under age 10 (born ca 1810/20) which would fit Judith's age, if she was born yet (she may have been born later in 1820, after the census). In 1830 there were seven Powell households in Marion and eight Powers families. Judith would be about 10 then, so she could be in the 10-14 age group (born ca 1815/20) or in the 5-9 group (ca 1820/25). Of the eight Powers households, five had possible matches for Judith: James Powers (c1790/1800) had two girls 10-14; George Powers (c1790/1800) had one girl 5-9; Gadi Powers (c1800) had two girls 10-14; Sarah Powers (c1790/1800) had two girls 10-14; Sarah Powers (c1790/1800) had one girl 5-9. We can eliminate Sarah Powers (both, as one is a duplicate) since that is Sarah Turner Powers, wife of John G. Powers. Her family is well proven by court records. Judith isn't her child. That leaves James, George and Gadi. Gadi Powers and wife Annie Tedden had a daughter Mary Jane Powers (1835-1915) who married Jesse Turner (c1834) son of Robert Turner (c1794), so that shows a familial connection. In 1840 Judith would have been about 20 years old, so she should be in the 20-29 group (c1810/20) or in the 15-19 group (ca 1820/25). Once again there were seven Powell households, and now only seven Powers families. Gadi Powers (c1800) had one female 15-19 and one 20-29; George Powers (1790/1800) had two girls 15-19 and two 20-29; and Mourning (---) Powers (1790/1800) had one 20-29. She lived right in the midst of the Turners of Catfish. James Turner and Judith are listed on the 1850 census in Marion Dist., SC. The nearest Turners are Daniel Turner (c1796) just 14 houses away, and Martin M. Turner (c1820) next to Daniel. Allen Powers (c1820) is just a few houses from James and Judith: # 1203/1208 James Turner 32 Farmer, born Marion; Judith 30; Mary 6; Sarah 4; Susan 3; Phillip 2. They seemed to be in the same general area for the 1860 census, though at this time, no other Turners or Powers were listed nearby: Gum Swamp PO # 332/333 James Turner, 40 Farmer, $0 / 200 born SC; Judea 37; Mary A. 17; Jos. 15; Martha 12; Phillip 11; Rebecca A. 10; Anderson J. 7; Benj. 6; Geo. 5; Virginia 3; Easter 1. The family moved to (then) neighboring Robeson Co., NC during the 1860's. They are listed there on the 1870 census about 15 households from Robert Turner (c1825), probably closely related, and about the same distance from Catherine (Turner) Parker, daughter of William Turner (1768): Thompsons Township, Lumberton PO, # 55/55 James Turner, 50 Farming $500/300 NC; Juda 48 Keeping House; Becey A. 20 Keeping House; Andrew 18 Farming; George 13 Farming; Easter 10; Sarah 8; Virginia 11; John C. 2; Hesekiah Kirby 27 female (sic) farming SC; Chinsey 20 female Keeping House NC. Apparently James died between 1870 and 1879, for on 5 Oct 1879 Judith married Elijah Bass in Robeson Co., NC. Elijah Bass was born ca 1797/98 (per 1850 census) in Robeson Co., NC. I don't know who his parents were. He was previously married to Nancy (---) by whom he had at least three children per the 1850 and 1860 census. Nancy died in the 1870's. They are listed on the 1880 census in Robeson Co., NC with many of her children nearby: Thompsons Township, # 403/403 Elijah Bass, 70 Head, married, Farmer, NC-NC-NC; Judith, 50 wife Keeps House; John C. Turner, 11 son Farm hand. I didn't find Judith or Elijah Bass on the 1900 census, they probably were both dead by then. |
Children of James Turner and Judith Powers. James and Judith Turner had 13 children per the 1850 through 1880 censuses. It does not appear that Judith and her 2nd husband Elijah Bass had any children together. He had at least three with his first wife Nancy (Thomas, Enoch and Neil Bass). I have not traced them. |
Mary Ann Turner was born ca 1843/44 per her age on the 1850 census (6). She was born in Marion Dist., SC (per 1850 census). She was with her parents in 1850 ("Mary" age 6) and with them in 1860 ("Mary A." age 17). She went with them to Robeson Co., NC in the 1860's. On 11 Jan 1866 James L. Lee obtained a marriage bond in Robeson Co., NC to marry "Mary Ann Turner." J. W. Hartman was the bondsman. They would have married that day or within a few days of obtaining the bond. James L. Lee was born ca 1840/41 in Marion Dist., SC a son of Jesse Lee and Anna Jones. He was previously married to Margaret (---) who apparently died in the 1860's. They are listed on the 1870 census in Robeson Co., NC a few houses from her parents: Thompson Township, # 50/50 James Lee, 30 farming $300/200 NC; Mary A. 26 Keeping House; Bryant 9; Rebecca Powers, 18 at home. Rebecca Powers may be related somehow. She married Benjamin Parker in 1873. He was a grandson of William Turner (c1768). They are listed on the 1880 census in Robeson Co., NC next to his parents and just a few houses from hers: Thompson Township # 407/407 James L. Lee 45 Head, Farmer, SC-SC-SC; Mary 37 wife Keeps House SC-SC-SC; Bryant 20 son NC-SC-SC; Ora 9 daughter; Lawrence 3 son; Earnist 4/12 Jan. son. They are still in Robeson for the 1900 census: Saddletree Township # 87/87 James L. Lee, Head, born --- 59, married 45 years, SC-SC-SC Farmer; Mary A. wife --- 55, 11 children born 5 living NC-SC-SC; Earnest son --- 20 NC-SC-SC; Macy? son --- 17; James son 15; Mary daughter 12. I wasn't able to find them on the 1910 census, both James and Mary Ann may have died by then. I found their son Earnest still in Robeson Co., NC then. |
Joseph Turner was born ca 1844/45 per his age on the 1860 census (15). He was born in SC, presumably in Marion District. He was not listed with his parents in 1850 for some reason, nor found elsewhere. He was with them in 1860 ("Jos. Turner" age 15). I wasn't able to find Joseph Turner on the 1870 census. He wasn't with his parents in Robeson Co., NC, nor listed elsewhere as far as I could determine. He probably was somewhere in Robeson but not listed. The 1870 census is particularly bad for leaving people out. On 14 Jan 1878 Joseph Turner married Susan Cox in Robeson Co., NC. They were both listed as 24 years old and residents of Robeson. They were married by D. C. McIntyre, JP. Witnesses were James P. Thompson, H. B. Ashley, and Archibald McCormic. Susan Cox was born ca 1854/55 in Robeson Co., NC, a daughter of Leachy Cox, apparently a single mother. Susan was with her mother on the 1860 census in Robeson ("Susan" age 5). I couldn't find them in 1870. Joseph and Susan are listed on the 1880 census in Robeson County near his parents and siblings. Two of Susan's sisters are living with them: Thompson's Township # 396/396 Joseph Turner, 36 Head, married, Farmer, SC-SC-SC; Susan 21 wife Keeps house NC-NC-NC; Mary E. 1 daughter NC-SC-NC; Magnolia 4/12 Feb. daughter; Annie Cox, 40 sister-in-law single, boarder NC-NC-NC; Cellia Cox, 24 Sister-in-law, single, Farm hand. I wasn't able to find the Joseph Turner family on the 1900 census. They were in neighboring Cumberland Co., NC for the 1910 census: Cross Creek Township, Fayetteville Town, 662 Russell Street, # 160/161 Joseph Turner, Head, 65 married once, 31 years, SC-US-US Farmer; Susan wife 50 married once 31 years, 11 children born 7 living NC-NC-NC; Laura daughter 25; Lillian daughter 19; Edney daughter 17; Tempie daughter 15; Lula Tart, daughter 24 married once 5 years, 3 children born 3 living; Staley son 4 SC-NC-NC; Eva daughter 2 NC-NC-NC; James A. Junior 1. They were still in Cumberland for the 1920 census: Cross Creek Township, Fayetteville Town, 814 Person Street, # 179/181 Joseph Turner, Head, 75 married, SC-SC-SC Laborer; Susan wife 56 NC-NC-NC; Zenice? Cox, sister-in-law 69 single NC-NC-NC.Joseph Turner died on 10 Sep 1927 in Cumberland Co., NC in Pearces Mill Township. His death certificate lists his parents as James Turner and "Julia Powell" (close enough). The informant is Mrs. Green Beal. I don't know who she is. Place of burial is listed just as Fayetteville, no cemetery name is given. He was listed as married, so Susan must have still been living then. I couldn't find Susan Cox Turner on the 1930 census, she may have died before then. I found no death certificate for her in Cumberland or elsewhere in North Carolina. |
Sarah Turner was born ca 1845/46 per her age on the
1850 census (4). For that census she was home with her parents ("Sarah"
age 4). She wasn't home in 1860. She was probably dead by then for they
named another daughter Sarah born ca 1862. Another possibility is that there was no daughter named Sarah born ca 1845/46 and that this could be Joseph Turner (c1845) instead. He is a proven child but wasn't listed in 1850. Perhaps this was him mistakenly listed as Sarah. |
Martha Ann Turner was born ca 1846/47 per her age on the 1850 census (3). She was home with her parents in 1850 ("Susan" age 3). I don't know if her name is "Susan Martha" for other records list her as "Martha A." or "Martha Ann." It is possible the 1850 census was in error. After all her brother Joseph wasn't listed at all in 1850 but should have been. Martha was with her parents in 1860 ("Martha" age 12). She went with her parents to Robeson Co., NC. On 20 Oct 1869 Malcolm Wilkerson married "Martha A. Turner" in Robeson Co., NC. They were married by J. T. Williams, JP. Malcolm Wilkinson was born ca 1837/38 in Robeson Co., NC a son of Alexander Wilkinson and Helen (---). He first married Christian Prevatt in 1856 and had several children with her. She died sometime between ca 1866 and 1869. Malcolm and Martha are listed on the 1870 census in Robeson near her parents and next to his brother Alexander. By this time the Wilkinson surname had morphed into Wilkerson: Thompson's Township, # 52/52 Malcom Wilkerson 30 Farming $200/125 NC; Martha 24 Keeping House; Harriett 12; William 5; John E. 4. They are on the 1880 census in Robeson: Thompson's Township # 382/382 Malcombe Wilkerson, 46 Farmer NC-NC-NC; Martha 36 Wife Keeps house; William J. 15 son farm hand; John C. 14 son farm hand; Neill 7 son; Ara P. 4 daughter; Sarah J. 3 daughter; Archie 2 son; Edgar 1 son. They are still in Robeson for the 1900 census: Saddletree Township, # 58/58 Malcum Wilkerson Head born ---, 69 married 30 years NC-NC-NC Farmer; Martha A. wife Sep 1849 50, married 30 years, 6 children born 6 living SC-SC-SC; Archie son Jul 1878 21 NC-NC-SC; Eddy son Apr 1880 20; Roxie daughter May 1883 17; Anna daughter Apr 1885 15; Amanda daughter June n1886 13; Bessie B. Daughter Dec 1889 10. I wasn't able to find Malcolm or Martha on the 1910 census. |
Phillip J. Turner was born ca 1847/48 per his age on the 1850 census (2). He was born in Marion Dist., SC. He was with his parents in 1850 ("Phillip" age 2), and with them in 1860 ("Phillip" age 11). He went with them to Robeson Co., NC in the 1860's. On 28 Dec 1867 "Phillip J. Turner son of James and Juda" married Sarah M. Lane "daughter of Joseph and Peggy" in Robeson Co., NC. They were married by James C. McKellar, JP. Their parents were listed because neither was over 21 yet and required parental permission to marry. Another entry on the same page of the marriage register lists her name as Sarah McLean instead of Sarah M. Lane. McLean is probably correct as there were no Lanes in Robeson Co., NC at that time but tons of McLeans. I haven't found much on Sarah McLean. There were several women of that name on the 1850 and 1860 census in Robeson Co., NC, one of whom is probably the one who married Phillip J. Turner in 1867. I didn't find a Joseph McLean on either of those censuses. Sarah apparently died before 1870 for Phillip was listed on the 1870 census in Marion Co, SC and had no wife or children at home. I didn't find Sarah listed anywhere either: Moody Township, Catfish PO, # 15/15 Enos Tart, 24 Farm Laborer SC; Phillip Turner 21 Farm Laborer. Enos M. Tart (c1846) is a son of James R. Tart and Julia Ann Smith, no known relationship to the Turners, but did live near them. On 23 Jul 1872 in Robeson Co., NC Phillip J. Turner, 23, white of Thompson's Township married Mary Eliza Davis, 20 of the same place. They were married by A. R. Pitman, Baptist Minister. Witnesses were Nathan Pitman, Hector C. Conner and Queen Conner. Mary Eliza Davis was born ca 1851/52 per her age on the marriage record. There were several Mary Davis's on the 1870 census in Robeson in Thompson's township who match her age-wise. I don't know which one she was. Mary Eliza Davis Turner died sometime between 1872 and 1875, presumably in Robeson Co., NC. On 28 Sep 1875, in Robeson, Phillip J. Turner, age 26 married Helen W. Wilkinson, age 16. They were married by James C. McKellar, JP. Witnesses were A. Wilkinson, Joseph Turner (Phillip's brother) and V. Turner (don't know that is). Helen W. Wilkinson (aka Wilkerson) was born ca 1856/57 in Robeson, a daughter of Malcolm Wilkerson and Christian Prevatt. Malcolm married Phillip Turner's sister Martha after the death of Christian Prevatt. Phillip and family are listed on the 1880 census in Robeson Co., NC near his siblings and parents: Thompson's Township, # 401/401 Phillip J. Turner, 25 Head, farmer SC-SC-SC; Hellon M. 19 wife, keeps house NC-NC-NC; Willie E., 1 son NC-SC-NC. Phillip J. Turner died ca 1882/83 in Robeson Co., NC. I don't know where he is buried. Helen remarried on 15 Nov 1883 to Thomas Preston Hulon in Robeson Co., NC. They were married by Wesley Thompson, JP at Helen Turner's home. Witnesses were Malcolm Wilkins (probably her father Malcolm Wilkinson), George Turner (brother-in-law) and A. C. Lee. They were in neighboring Cumberland Co. NC for the 1900 census: Rock Fish Township, # 80/80 Thomas P. Hulon, June 1853 46, married 16 years, NC-NC-NC; Helen M. wife Dec 1854, 45, 9 children born 9 living; Rufus F. son Mar 1885 15; Luther L. son Apr 1887 13; Joseph E. Son Oct 1889 10; Linnia M. Daughter Dec 1891 8; Lee G. son Jan 1894 6; Myrtle M. daughter Aug 1895 4; Dora C. Daughter Apr 1898 2; William E. Turner, step son Jun 1878 21; Rosa F. step-daughter Oct 1883 16. Helen was listed on the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census in Cumberland Co., NC. She died there on 6 Dec 1942 and is buried at Big Rockfish Cemetery. Her 2nd husband Thomas P. Hulon died sometime between 1910 and 1920. |
Rebecca Ann Turner was born ca 1850 in Marion Dist., SC. She was not with her parents for the 1850 census, so probably born later in the year. She was home in 1860 ("Rebecca A." age 10) and home in 1870 ("Becey A." age 20). On 8 Nov 1870 "Rebecca Ann Terner" married Richard Moody in Robeson Co., NC. They were married by John Taylor, JP. I haven't been able to discover much about Richard Moody. The marriage record gave no age or place of residence. He was probably from Marion Co., SC. I didn't find a Richard Moody in 1850, 1860 or 1870 in the region who could be the one who married Rebecca in 1870. His 1900 census entry shows him born June 1845 in SC. I found no matching Richard Moody on the 1850, 1860 or 1870 census in NC or SC. I wasn't able to find Richard and Rebecca on the 1880 census. They weren't in Robeson or in Marion or elsewhere. I did find a Richard Moody c1845 in Haywood Co., NC, wife Lorenah M. (c1845), children Mary (c1866), Charlie (c1868), Mattie (c1875) and Thomas (c1877). Richard's name and age matches, as does his son Thomas. Is this the same family in Robeson in 1900? Haywood and Robeson Counties are about as far apart as you can get. I wasn't able to find Richard of 1880 Haywood in that county in 1900, so they may be one and the same. If this is our Richard, then Rebecca Ann Turner had died by then and he had married Lorenah M. (---) in the meantime. I don't think it is them in Haywood despite the similarities. Richard Moody is in Robeson in 1900. He was recently married to Sallie Britt (on 20 Jan 1898 in Robeson): Thompson's Township, # 144/146 Richard Moody, Head, June 1845 54 married 2 years, SC-SC-SC Farmer; Sallie wife Jan 1874 26, married 2 years, 1 child born 1 living NC-NC-NC; Tom son Sep 1877 22 single, NC-SC-NC; Lillie daughter May 1899 1. |
Anderson J. Turner was born ca 1852/53 per his age on the 1860 census (7). He was with his parents in 1860 in Marion Dist., SC ("Anderson J." age 7), and with them in 1870 in Robeson Co., NC ("Andrew" age 18). "Emmerson Turner" (don't know why his name is listed like that), age 20, married "Angline Wilkerson" also 20 on 13 Nov 1873 in Robeson Co., NC. Service performed by James C. McKellar, JP. Witnesses were A. C. Lee, Jesse Lee and P. P. Lee. Angeline Wilkerson was born ca 1858/59 per her age on the 1880 census (21). I don't know who her parents were, I couldn't find her on the 1860 or 1870 census in Robeson or elsewhere. She is probably related to Malcolm Wilkerson who married Anderson's sister Martha Turner a few years earlier. He did have a daughter from his first marriage named Harriet A. Wilkerson (c1857) who was with him in 1860 and 1870 but gone by 1880. They could be one and the same person, but I'm not certain of that. They are listed on the 1880 census in Robeson next to his mother: Thompson's Township, # 404/404 Anderson J. Turner, 23 married, farmer NC-NC-NC; Anjaline 21 wife Keeps house; Rosa J. 6 daughter; Junius 3 son; James P. 1 son. I wasn't able to find Anderson J. Turner or Angeline on the 1900 census. I found two of their children living together in Robeson that year, so the parents were probably dead by then. |
Benjamin Turner was born ca 1853/54 in Marion Dist., SC. He was with his parents in 1860 ("Benj. Turner" age 6). He wasn't with them in 1870 or listed elsewhere in the region as far as I could find. I have no other record of him. |
George Washington Turner was born 19 Jan 1856 (per death certificate) in Marion Dist., SC. He was home with his parents in 1860 ("Geo." age 5) and with them in 1870 ("George" age 13). George married Sarah M. (---) in the 1870's, before 1879. I didn't find a marriage record for them in Robeson, so perhaps they married elsewhere, possibly in Marion Co., SC (she was born in SC). Sarah was born ca 1856/57 in SC. I don't know her maiden name. They are listed on the 1880 census in Robeson Co., NC near his brother Joseph: Thompson's Township # 394/394 George Turner, 24 Farmer, NC-NC-NC; Sarah M. 23 wife keeps house SC-SC-SC; David W. 6/12 Dec. son NC-NC-SC. Sarah M. (---) Turner died between 1880 and 1886, presumably in Robeson Co., NC. On 18 Feb 1886 "G. W. Turner" age 30 married "Sallie Edwards" age 26 in Robeson Co., NC. They were married by D. C. McMillan, Baptist Minister. Witnesses were I. L. Lee, W. A. Lewis, W. F. Williamson, W. H. Howell. Sallie Ann Edwards was born Oct. 1859 in SC a daughter of Carey Edwards and Mary Ann Miller. They are listed on the 1900 census in Robeson two houses from his brother John: Thompson's Township # 136/136 George W. Turner, Head, Jan 1856 44 married 14 years, SC-SC-SC, Farmer; Sallie wife Oct 1859 40 8 children born 7 living; Volney son Aug 1885 14 NC-SC-SC; Claudy son May 1888 12; Annie B. daughter July 1890 9; James C. Son Sep 1892 7; Maggie D. daughter Feb 1895 5; Eller daughter Mar 1896 4; Julean M. Daughter Aug 1899 9/12. They are on the 1910 census in Robeson: Thompson's Township # 170/170 George Turner, Head, 54 married twice, 24 years, SC-SC-SC Farmer; Sallie A. wife 50 married once, 9 children born 8 living SC-NC-SC; Blanch daughter 19 NC-SC-SC; Jimmie son 18; Claud son 22; Madge daughter 15; George E. daughter 13; Maie daughter 9; Worth son 7. They are on the 1920 census in Robeson: Fairmont Township, Fairmont Town, Leesville Street, # 132/144 George W. Turner, Head, 64 married, SC-SC-SC Retail Merchant - General Store; Sallie A. wife 60 NC-NC-NC; Claude L. son 30 NC-SC-NC Clerk; Georgia E. Daughter 21; R. Worth son 18; Velney O. son 32 single, Agent - Rail road office. They are listed on the 1930 census in Robeson: Town of Fairmont, Leesville Street, # 100/112 George W. Turner, head, 74 married at age 21 SC-SC-SC None (occupation); Sallie A. wife 70 married at age 25 NC-NC-NC; Claud L. son 40 single NC-SC-NC. George W. Turner died on 17 Apr 1930 in Robeson Co., NC. His death certificate shows he is buried in Fairmont. I don't know if that is the cemetery name or it just means in the town (perhaps there was only one cemetery there?) Sallie Ann Edwards Turner died on 6 Jul 1939 (date shared with me). I didn't find a death certificate for her in Robeson Co., NC. |
Virginia Turner was born May 1858 in Marion Dist., SC. She was with her parents in 1860 ("Virginia" age 3) and with them in 1870 ("Virginia" age 11). On 2 Jan 1879 Virginia Turner, age 18, married William H. Howell, age 21 in Robeson Co., NC. They were married by D. C. McIntyre, JP. Witnesses were her brothers Joseph and Phillip Turner and Rachel Moody. William H. Howell was born January 1851 according to the 1900 census, but his marriage record puts his birth at ca 1857/58 and his 1880 census entry puts his birth at ca 1856/57. He was born in NC, presumably in Robeson County. He may be the same William Howell born in 1850 in Robeson, son of John B. Howell and Elizabeth (---).
