I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Joseph Turner, but I think he may be a 1st cousin (many times removed) or perhaps even an uncle. Joseph Turner was born ca 1802/03 per his age on the 1850 census (47). He was born in Marion Dist, SC, also per the 1850 census. He is a proven son of John Turner and Juda Hathcock as shown in an 1840 court record. Joseph's parents are not listed on the 1810 census for some reason. He does appear to be with them in 1820 in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1794/1804). Joseph Turner married Elizabeth --- ca 1825/30 in Marion Dist, SC. She was born ca 1800/01 per her age in 1850 (49). I don't know what her maiden name is. Joseph Turner was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was alphabetical, so we can't determine who his neighbors were. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Marion Dist., SC page 48 Joseph Turner 1000100000000-0000200000000 Slaves=000000-000000 Analysis: 1 Male 20-29 (1800/1810) Joseph Turner (c1803) 1 male 0-4 (1825/1830) Son? This census was not alphabetical, so we can determine, more or less, where they lived. Joseph was listed next door to James Lane Jr. on one side, and Margaret Blackman on the other. Just a few houses away were several Turner's including: Henry Turner (brother), Martha Turner, John Turner Jr. (brother) and Daniel Turner (my ancestor). As best as I can determine, this was within Moody Township, probably in the Temperance Hill area or west of there towards Catfish Creek. In either event, this is probably within the bounds of modern Dillon County in the area where the Town of Latta is now. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Marion Dist., SC page 140 Joseph Turner 0010010000000-4200010000000 Slaves=000000-000000 Analysis: 1 Male 30-39 (1800/1810) Joseph Turner (c1803) 1 male 10-14 (1825/1830) Son? (1835/40) --> gone by 1850 0 Slaves Joseph Turner went to court in 1840 to prove his ethnicity, for he like most of the Turners was of mixed race origin. Here are some of the genealogical details from the case:
Joseph Turner and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC. He was not listed near any other Turner families at all, though most of his neighbors from 1840 were still nearby, but not listed quite as close, so he probably moved during the 1840's or this is just a result of the order the census taker visited houses. Several of Joseph's close neighbors in 1850 were neighbors to the Stephen Turner family in 1860, though Joseph was not found that year, and coincidentally Stephen wasn't found in 1850 (but they are not the same person!).

All of the girls could have married by then and perhaps Joseph and Elizabeth had died. |
Children of Joseph Turner and Elizabeth (---). Joseph Turner and Elizabeth had several children, most of them daughters. The 1830 and 1840 census indicate at least one son, but so far he is unidentified. The daughters are all proven by the 1850 census. Druzilla ("Zilla") is the only one I've found additional information on.
