I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Robert Turner. Robert Turner was born ca 1831/32 per his age on the 1860 census (28) and 1870 census (38). His 1900 census entry shows him born Feb 1825 which is off considerably from his previous entries. The February part could be correct though. Robert's parents aren't known, though it is entirely possible he is the same Robert who is a proven son of Martha Turner (1784/90). In 1861 Robert Turner Jr. took the Sheriff of Marion District to court regarding the punitive capitation tax that was levied against free persons of color.
The problem is that we don't know which Robert this record refers to. In 1861 there were three adult Robert Turners in Marion, the oldest was Robert Turner (c1794), and he is a proven son of Reuben Turner. That leaves two younger men, either of whom could have been referred to as Robert Jr. at this time. This one, and Robert Turner (c1825). Martha Turner (also a daughter of Reuben) had unidentified sons in the 1820/25 age group and the 1830/35 age groups, so therefore both of the younger Roberts fit. For the 1840 census Robert would have been about eight years old, so should be in the 5-9 age group (born ca 1830/35). Martha Turner, Elias Turner, Hugh Turner and John Turner each had at least one son that age with them. I'd say that Martha and John are the most likely candidates, as they lived in the Catfish Creek area, whereas Elias and Hugh lived near Effingham in present day Florence County. Robert isn't listed on the 1850 census as far as I can find. Several Marion Turners are "missing" that year for some reason. Robert Turner married Sarah A. --- before ca 1853, presumably in Marion Dist., SC. She was born ca 1836/37 per her age on the 1860 census (23). Her 1900 census entry gives her birth date as Aug. 1840. I don't know her maiden name. The death certificate of her son Author Turner gives his mother's name as Sarah Ryatt. Son Daniel's gives her as Sarah Turner. For the 1860 census, Robert Turner and family were in Marion District. No other Turners were listed nearby. They were surrounded by members of the Coleman family, perhaps they were related in some way. Based on an analysis of their neighbors they were residing somewhere in Legette Township: Marion C.H. PO, # 634/634 Robt Turner 28 Farm Laborer $0 / 100; S. A. Turner 23 female; A. Turner 6 male; Jas. 4; Robt. 8/12. For the Civil War, one of the Robert Turner's enlisted in Company C, 26th Regiment Infantry as a Private. He was listed by Sellers as "Robert Turner", and he said he was captured at Five Forks in 1865. (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 639). I have no way of knowing if the above record is this Robert Turner, or one of the others. There were at least three Robert Turner's of proper age to be Civil War soldiers in Marion at that time. The other Turner's in the same company were from the Effingham area Turner's, and I think that Robert Turner was one of them (a son of Benjamin W. Turner) and not the Robert Turner under study here. Robert Turner and wife moved to Kirby Township prior to 1870, for they were found in that township on the 1870 census. Several other Turner families lived there, but they weren't listed close by: Kerby's Township, Oak Grove PO, # 119/128 Robt Turner 38 Farm Laborer $0/0 SC; Sarah 34; Arthur 15; James 13; Evanda 10; Jane 8; Danl 6. Robert and family were still in Kirby Township for the 1880 census. This time they were listed next door to Joel H. Turner (c1825), relationship unknown: Kirby Township, # 356/356 Robert Turner 50 Farmer SC-SC-SC; Sarah A. 45 wife Keeping House; Ather 23 son, laborer in farm; Danniel 14 son laborer in farm; Mathew 5 son. Between 1880 and 1900 Robert and family moved to Bethea Township (now Dillon County). They were in an area not known for Turner families, and only one other Turner family was there for the 1900 census, an Isam Turner that I haven't yet identified: Bethea Township, # 85/85 Robert Turner, head, Feb 1825 75 married, SC-SC-SC; Sarah A. wife Apr 1840 60 married 6 years (sic), 6 children born, 5 living; Auther son Jan 1849 51 married; Mary G-dau May? 1877 23 single. I wasn't able to find Robert or Sarah on the 1910 census. |
