I don't know how I'm related to James Turner, but probably a cousin at least. James Turner was born ca 1827/28 per his age on the 1850 census (22). He was born in Marion Dist., SC (also per 1850 census). I don't know who his parents were. For the 1830 census James would have been about two years old. He should be enumerated in the under 5 age group (born ca 1825/30) Henry Turner (c1811) had one son under 5 (unidentified); Jesse Turner (1800/10) had one under 5 (unidentified); John Turner (1765) had one under 5 (unidentified); Joseph Turner (c1803) had one under 5 (unidentified); Reuben Turner (1760/65) had one under 5 (unidentified). In 1840 James Turner should be in the 10-14 age group (ca 1825/30). Joseph Turner (c1803) had one 10-14 (unidentified); Martha Turner (1784/90) had one 10-14 (possibly identified); and John Turner (1765) had one 10-14 (unidentified). James Turner married Sarah Desda --- before ca 1849/50 in Marion Dist., SC. She was born ca 1832/33 per her age on the 1850 census (17). Her maiden name is given on the death certificate of her son Hugh G. Turner but it is hard to make out. It lists her as "Desdy Amoul" or something like that. If the reader can interpret this, please let me know. Does it say "Avant" perhaps?
They are listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, but not near any other Turners. They seem to be in what later became Bethea Township, possibly in the Berry Crossroads area. Their neighbors in 1850 included Samuel J. Bethea and Slaughter Berry families, who back in 1840 were also neighbors to each other, but with no Turner families listed nearby: # 1343/1349 James Turner 22 Farmer born Marion; Desda 17; Elizabeth 2/12. James and Desda are marked as having married within the census year, so they married between June 1849 and June 1850. I wasn't able to find James and family on the 1860 census. They should have been somewhere in Marion or perhaps in neighboring Horry that year. I wasn't able to find them in 1870 either. I found Sarah on the 1880 census in Horry Co., SC. She was widowed by this time, so James died sometime before then: Dog Bluff Township # 94/96 Sarah D. Turner, 42 widowed Keeping House SC-SC-SC; Hugh G. 17 son; Robert 15 son; Daniel 13 son; James 9 son; Rosa 5 daughter. All listed as mulattoes. I wasn't able to find Sarah D. (---) Turner on the 1900 census. Note: While searching for the family on the 1860 and 1870 census I found a Desda in Horry married to Robert Dimery. It occurred to me that she could be the same person and that James Turner died ca 1860 and she married again and had several children by Mr. Dimery. I wasn't able to find him or his family in 1880, but that is when she is listed as a widow in Horry with several children, and she is right next to some of the other Dimerys then. Just a thought, but is this the same family? Here is some raw data: Robert Dimery (c1825) with parents in 1850 Horry (all listed as mulattoes); In 1860 Horry: # 427/427 Robt Dimery 31 Farmer, SC; Dasdy 35, Chesia 11 female; Polly 6; Robert 4; not named 1 (male). Robert listed as mulatto, everyone else white. In 1870 Horry: Dog Bluff Township, # 46/46 Robert Demary 48 Farmer $ 100/150 SC; Desdy 25; Hugee 12; Pinkney 11; Daniel 10; Tillman 9. All listed as mulattoes. In 1880 I couldn't find any of the above. Are the Dimery and Turner families tied together via Desda? Perhaps, but I'm not certain, but thought I would put the idea out there in case I'm on to something. |

Children of James Turner and Sarah Desda (---). James and Desda had one child with them in 1850 (Elizabeth). In 1880 Widow Sarah had five children at home. I have only been able to find out more about son Hugh.
