Revision History:

6 Nov 2008 Revised and reformatted by Marty Grant, a 3rd great grandson.

Joseph Watson was born ca 1824/25 per his age of 25 on the 1850 census. He was born in North Carolina, possibly in Onslow County where he was living in 1850. It is possible he was born somewhere else, though probably near Onslow.

After many years of research I have not been able to find out who Josephs parents were. I once thought he was a son of Asa Watson (c1787) and Elizabeth Ward because they lived in Onslow and according to the 1830 and 1840 census they had an apparent son Josephs age. However, subsequent research shows it is highly unlikely that Joseph is their son.

You will find Joseph listed as Asas son in various websites and public family databases. This was all copied from my website back when I thought it was true. I have long since discounted it, but others still show it that way, and probably will for all eternity even though it is wrong. That is the problem with not doing your own research. Copy it from someone else and it could be wrong. In this case I made the initial mistake, but many have copied it from me. Even I make mistakes, though only rarely! <g>

Who are Josephs parents? Census analysis often helps narrow down the suspects, but in this case it doesnt help too much.

Joseph would have been about 5 years old in 1830. That census only listed the heads of household by name. Everyone else was enumerated by age and sex. Someone born ca 1825 could be in the under 5 column (ca 1825/30) or in the age 5-9 column (ca 1820/25). There is a certain amount of overlap there depending on the actual birth date. There were only two Watson households in Onslow in 1830, one was Asa Watson (c1787). He had one apparent son aged 5-9 (1820/25). This child is positively identified as David Ward Watson (born 5 Jul 1821). Therefore our Joseph isnt in that household.

The other Watson in 1830 was an apparent widow Dorcas Watson (1790/1800). She had one male under 5 (ca 1825/30). That could be Joseph, but is it him? More evidence is needed to be sure one way or the other.

There is also the distinct possibility that Joseph was from a neighboring county and therefore not in Onslow in 1830. Looking at the nearby counties I see several with male children born ca 1820/25 or ca 1825/30. In Carteret County (borders Onslow to the east) we have Moses Watson (1778) with one of each, neither identified.

In Craven County (one county north) we have Dennis Watson (1790/94) with one male born ca 1820/25, unidentified.

In Duplin in 1830 (borders Onslow to the west), there is Bright Watson (c1803) with one male born ca 1825/30. Bright and his family moved to Georgia and later to Dale Co., AL and he did have a son Joseph H. Watson (c1845), so he isnt our Josephs father.

In Jones County (borders Onslow to the north) there is Nancy B. Watson (probably widow of Ivy Watson) with one male ca 1820/25. They have a proven son named Joseph H. Watson who moved to Mississippi, so not ours. Im not 100% certain that Nancy B. Watson is Ivys widow though, so she is still a possible match.

In New Hanover County (borders to the south) there is John Watson (1780/90) with one male born ca 1825/30.

There are too many possibilities in 1830 to be sure of anything without additional evidence.

Joseph Watson would have been about 15 years old by the 1840 census, so he should be enumerated in either the 10-14 age group (born ca 1825/30), or in the 15-19 age group (born ca 1820/25). There were three Watson households in Onslow that year: Jeremiah Watson (1775/80), John Watson (c1810) and Asa Watson (c1787). Of these, only Asa had someone the right age, but as mentioned above, that son is already identified as someone else.

Moving to neighboring counties in 1840 there is Moses Watson (1778) in Carteret with one boy 15-19 (1820/25). In Craven there is Dennis Watson (1790/94) with one male born ca 1820/25, unidentified.

Bright Watson of 1830 Duplin was gone by 1840 (in Marion Co., GA). Nancy B., widow of Ivy Watson had remarried (to James Padrick) and moved to Holmes Co., MS by 1840. Finally, John Watson of 1830 New Hanover was nowhere to be found in 1840.

For the 1850 census, Joseph Watson was living in Onslow County, NC with the Asa and Lucretia Sadbury (Sidbury) family. They were in the Stump Sound region and no other Watsons were nearby, though Elizabeth, widow of Jeremiah Watson (1775/80); John Watson (c1810) and Asa Watson (c1787) were all listed in Onslow that year too, but in Swansboro District.

Joseph's future wife Sarah Jenkins was just two houses away in 1850.

Joseph Watson could be a son of Lucretia Sidbury, if she had been previously married to a Mr. Watson. Her oldest Sidbury child was 6 years younger than Joseph so that math would work. I haven't been able to find out much about the Asa Sidbury family so far. It is also possible that Joseph was just a hired laborer, and of no relation to the Sidbury family. I found them on the 1840 census in Onslow. They had no males in their household Josephs age. Therefore I doubt Lucretia is Joseph Watsons mother.

Joseph Watson obtained a marriage bond in Onslow County on 28 Jan 1851 to marry Sarah Jenkins. Joseph Ennett was the bondsman. I don't know if he was related to either the Watson or Jenkins families. Jasper Etheridge was a witness to the bond (not the marriage).

Sarah Jenkins was born ca 1830/31 in Onslow County, a daughter of Osborne Jenkins and Ann ---.

Joseph Watson died in the 1850s, presumably in Onslow County. They had a child born March 1852, so he probably died between 1852 and 1860. He didnt leave a Will nor have any estate records been found.

Sarah's father (Osborne Jenkins) died in February 1856, and Sarah was listed in his Estate records as "Sarah Parker" on one record (1856) and as "Sarah Packer" on another (1857), but the 1860 census still listed her as a Watson again. I don't know if this was just a mistake or if she was married briefly during that time frame to a "Packer" or "Parker", but that doesn't work with her 1860 entry showing her still as a "Watson".

The 1860 census showed the widow Sarah Jenkins Watson living with her widowed mother and siblings in Onslow County, NC.

George H. Jenkins obtained a marriage bond in Onslow County on 2 Sep 1862 to marry Sarah Watson. They were undoubtedly cousins, though I don't know precisely how they were related.  Jerre W. Yopp was the bondsman. I don't know if he was a relative or not. They married on 14 Sep 1862, with B. W. Jenkins as a witness.

Sarah's mother Anna died 20 May 1862, and in her estate records (June 1863), Sarah was named as an heir, and listed as "Sarah Jenkins".

That is the last record I have for Sarah. I didn't find her on the 1870 or 1880 census in Onslow Co, NC, nor any of the other places I've looked, which is pretty much everywhere, nation-wide.

Children of Joseph Watson and Sarah Jenkins. Joseph Watson and Sarah Jenkins had only one child per the 1860 census. If there were others they may have died young.

1.      William H. Watson (1852)

William H. Watson was born March 1852 in Onslow County, NC, presumably in Stump Sound Township. He was home with his mother for the 1860 census. I have no further record of him until he marries Mary C. Davis in 1882 in Columbus Co, NC. His marriage record lists his parents as "Joseph and Sarah Watson."

See his page for more information on his family.
