William H. Watson was born March 1852 per the 1900
census. He was born in Onslow County, North Carolina, somewhere
in Stump Sound Township (south and west of Jacksonville). I don't know what his "H" middle initial stands for, but it could be for "Henry" if he was named after his uncle William Henry Jenkins. The name Wm Henry Watson is given on the death certificate of his daughter Ellen Watson Malpass. His parents are Joseph Watson and Sarah Jenkins. This is proven by two sources, first, his marriage record (1882) lists his parents as Joseph & Sarah Watson. Secondly, William was listed with his widowed mother for the 1860 census, and they were with his mother's widowed mother, showing three generations in the same household. William H. Watson was listed in Onslow Co, NC at home with his widowed mother Sarah Jenkins Watson for the 1860 census. They were all living with Sarah's widowed mother. 1860 census abstract: (Explanation of this census) (Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age) 1860 ONSLOW CO, NC Page 182 House/Family # 68/ 69 -- STUMP SOUND Twp JENKINS ANN 50 F W FARMERESS NC 1809/1810 JENKINS UZZA 22 M W FARM LABOR NC 1837/1838 JENKINS WILLIAM H 20 M W FARM LABOR NC 1839/1840 JENKINS MILLY A 19 F W NC 1840/1841 WATSON S J 30 F W SPINSTER NC 1829/1830 WATSON WILLIAM H 8 M W NC 1851/1852 William's mother Sarah married George H. Jenkins on 14 Sep 1862 in Onslow Co, NC, so George became William's step-father. I wasnt able to find William or his mother on the 1870 census. They were not in Onslow County, nor elsewhere in south western North Carolina as far as I could find. I even extended the search nation-wise but was unable to find them. I had the same problem in 1880. No sign of William or his mother. I did find a William Watson in New Hanover County, who could be the same William, but there is no way to be sure. He was in Harnett Township with another family: John Bender (or Pender?), 50, farmer; Mary J. 47 wife; Mary 21 daughter; Martha 20 daughter; William Watson, 30, widowed, laborer. This record shows that William was widowed. Who was his first wife? From this record it appears he had no children by that marriage. William H. Watson moved to Columbus Co., NC between 1880 and 1882. William Watson married Mary Catherine Davis on 16 Nov 1882 in Columbus Co, NC. The marriage record listed him as "W. H. Watson" and listed his parents as "Joseph and Sarah Watson." His bride was "Mary C. Davis" daughter of "Unknown and Mahala Davis". They were married by Minister J. P. Lennon at the home of Neal Davis (who was Mary's grandfather). Mary Catherine Davis was born August 1866 (per 1900 census) in what is now Columbus County, NC, but was then part of Brunswick County. This was the Livingston Creek area, near the present community of Delco, NC. This area was part of Brunswick County (and North West Township) until 1877 when it was transferred to Columbus County and became Ransom Township. Mary was born out of wedlock to Mahala Davis a daughter of Cornelius "Neal" Davis and his wife Tabitha. Mahala was charged with Bastardy in November 1866, and she and W. R. Skipper and William Smith Jr were bondsman for the Bastardy Bond. It is possible that either Skipper or Smith was the father, but that isn't conclusive. On 24 Nov 1880 (this year must be wrong), Cornelius Davis deeded 34 acres of land on Livingston Creek to "Mary C. Watson" for only One dollar. This was the same land that Neal Davis had been deeded way back in 1815. The land was on the south side of the creek. This deed was dated prior to Mary's marriage to William H. Watson, but since it was recorded 25 years later, I think the date is in error for it was two years prior to Mary's marriage to William Watson. It was recorded in the deed books on 3 Mar 1905. Witnesses included M. J. Russell and F. P. Bordeauex. (Columbus Co, NC Deed Book D1 page 428). This land is near Piney Grove Church (see below for more on the church). On 3 Oct 1895 "W. H. Watson and wife M. C. Watson" of Columbus County, sold 5 acres of land on the south side of Livingston Creek to George A. Vanse. I don't know where they got this land, unless it was a portion of the 34 acres (but see the next deed). Witnesses were: J. M. Bordeaux, and Alva Benson. (Columbus Co, NC Deed Book D1 page 415). W. H. Watson and Mary C. Watson are listed as members of the Piney Grove Avent Christian Church on a membership roll dated 14 Oct 1895 per Mason Malpass. On 7 Dec 1898 William H. Watson and wife Mary C. Watson, of Columbus County sold 34 acres on the south side of Livingston Creek, to Thomas E. Applewhite. This is clearly the same land deeded to Mary by her grandfather Cornelius Davis in 1880. Witnesses were: R. C. Applewhite, and George W. Applewhite. (Columbus Co, NC Deed Book D1 page 413). The last deed above would seem to have left the Watson family without any land, unless they had other property I haven't found yet. William and Mary and family were listed on the 1900 census in Columbus County, NC in Ransom Township. Lewis Malpass and Ely Parker and families were their neighbors on either side. William Bryant Watson (1846), son of Levin Watson (1822) of Bladen Co., NC, was listed just 18 houses away. I have found no connection between the two Watson families. 1900 census abstract: (Explanation of this census) (Note: The birth dates given in 1900 were part of the original census record) 1900 COLUMBUS CO, NC Page 104B House/Family # 200/ 200--RANSOM Twp WATSON WILLIAM H HD W M MAR 1852 48 M 18 NC NC NC FARMER WATSON MARY C WF W F AUG 1866 33 M 18 7 7 NC NC NC WATSON LULA J D W F OCT 1883 16 S NC NC NC WATSON MAHALA I D W F JUL 1886 13 S NC NC NC WATSON MARY F D W F OCT 1889 10 S NC NC NC WATSON ELLEN I D W F NOV 1894 5 S NC NC NC WATSON IONA C D W F MAR 1892 8 S NC NC NC WATSON ZADIA I D W F JUL 1897 2 S NC NC NC WATSON WILLIAM H S W M APR 1899 1 S NC NC NC W. H. Watson was present at a Conference Meeting at the Piney Grove church on 2 Aug 1902 per Mason Malpass who studied the church records. He also notes that William wasnt present at the Oct 1902 meeting. William H. Watson and his wife Mary both died in the 1900-1910 period. They are buried at Piney Grove Advent Christian Church. Daughter Iona is also there with them. They only had wooden markers for many years. Mamie Dale added concrete markers several years ago containing partial names. More recently Mason Malpass had some small granite markers placed which included their names and birth dates and approximate death dates. Mason informs me that their graves are within site of the old Watson home-place, though the exact spot of the house is not known. The Jesse Malpass home may be on or very near the old home site. Piney Grove Avent Christian Church is at the corner of Piney Grove Road (SR 1834) and Livingston Chapel Road (SR 1843). Here are some links to help locate the church via maps: |
Children of William H. Watson and Mary Catherine Davis. William H. Watson and Mary C. Davis had at least 7 children, all proven by the 1900 census. |
Lula J.
Watson was born October 1883 in Columbus Co, NC,
presumably in the Delco community, in Ransom Township. She was
home with her parents for the 1900 census ("Lula J." age 16,
born Oct 1883).
She married Tolar Davis Tyler ca 1903/04, probably in Columbus Co, NC, or possibly in Marion Co, SC where they later lived. He was born May 1890 in Horry Co., SC a son of Elias Tyler and Elizabeth (---). They are on the 1910 census in Columbus County in Williams Township. They were living on Clarendon Road: Toler Tyler, head, 21, married once, 6 years, born NC-NC-NC; Lular, wife, 24, married once, 6 years, 2 children born, 2 living; Roy son 5; Mamie L. daughter 2. Mason Malpass found a record at Piney Grove Church showing Lula Watson being dismissed on 13 Sep 1914. She had long been married and moved away by then. Tolar Davis Tyler died on 23 Aug 1919 in Horry Co., SC and is buried at Bayboro Church there. Lula is listed on the 1920 census in Horry Co., SC in Bayboro Township. She is listed between the households of William R. Tyler 50 and William B. Tyler 54: Lula Tyler, head, 35, widowed, born NC-NC-NC; Leroy B. son 15 SC-SC-NC; Mamie dau 13; Leitha 10; Trody son 5; Leland 11/12. I couldnt find Lula or her children on the 1930 census. I dont know when Lula died exactly, but she is buried at the McMillan Cemetery near Mullins, Marion County, SC. Her stone lists her as "Lula J. Tyler mother of Roy Tyler", and her son W. Leroy Tyler (1905-1960) and his wife Kathleen are buried by her. There are no dates on Lulas stone. |
Mahala I.
Watson was born July 1886 in Columbus Co, NC,
presumably in the Delco community, in Ransom Township. She was
home with her parents for the 1900 census ("Mahala I." age 13,
born Jul 1886).
I have no data on her after the 1900 census. Mason Malpass found a record at Piney Grove Church showing an Isabel Watson being expelled for non attendance on 16 Aug 1907. Is this Mahala? She did have an I middle initial. |
Mary
Florence Watson was born 28 October 1889 (per
tombstone) in Columbus Co, NC, presumably in the Delco
community, in Ransom Township.
She was home with her parents for the 1900 census ("Mary F." age 10, born Oct 1889). After her parents died (ca 1900-1910), Mary went to Marion Co, SC for some reason, and was listed there on the 1910 census with the Daniel J. Turner family. She later married their son Rudolph Turner. 1900 census abstract: (Explanation of this census) (Note: The birth dates given in 1900 were part of the original census record) 1910 MARION CO, SC Page 249A House/Family # 178/ 179--REAVES Twp TURNER THOMAS L HD M W 23 S SC SC SC FARMER 1886/1887 TURNER DANIEL FA M W 63 M 1 42 SC SC SC 1846/1847 TURNER VIRGINIA MO F W 69 M 1 42 SC SC SC 1840/1841 TURNER RUDOLF BR M W 36 S SC SC SC 1873/1874 WATSON MARY BO F W 18 S SC SC SC BOARDER 1891/1892 FLOYD KEMPER AS M W 12 S SC SC SC ADOPTED SON 1897/1898 Mary Florence Watson married Rudolph Alonzo Turner on 20 Jan 1915 in Mullins, Marion Co, SC. (He was a son of Daniel J. Turner and Laura Virginia James, also my ancestors). He died 29 Jun 1940, and she died 21 Jan 1956. They are both buried at the McMillan Cemetery near Mullins, Marion County, SC. |
Iona C.
Watson was born March 1892 in Columbus Co, NC,
presumably in the Delco community, in Ransom Township. She was
home with her parents for the 1900 census ("Iona C." age 8, born
Mar 1892).
She may have died young. She is buried by her parents at the Piney Grove Advent Christian Church. |
Ellen Inez
Watson was born 3 Nov 1894 in Columbus Co, NC,
presumably in the Delco community, in Ransom Township.
She was home with her parents for the 1900 census ("Ellen I." age 5, born Nov 1894). I did not find Ellen on the 1910 census. Hattie Malpass (wife of Billy Malpass, a grandson of Ellen) told me that Ellen went to live in SC briefly after the death of her parents and when about 12 or 13 moved in with the Emit Parker family. She married David F. Malpass on 3 Feb 1912 in Columbus Co, NC. David is a son of Franklin Malpass and Rebecca (Wadkins) Malpass (c1858-1914), both formerly of Pender County. (Thanks to Hattie Malpass for sharing Franklins name, I wasnt able to find it on my own.) Note that Malpass can also be spelled Malpas. It seems most of the present day family spell it Malpass. I have them on the 1920 census in Ransom Township. 1920 census abstract: (Explanation of this census) (Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age) 1920 COLUMBUS CO, NC Page 156 House/Family # 431/ 434--RANSOM Twp MALPASS DAVID F HD O F M W 36 M NC NC NC 1883/1884 MALPASS ELLEN WF F W 23 M NC NC NC 1896/1897 MALPASS ALONZO S M W 7 S NC NC NC 1912/1913 MALPASS ANNIE C D F W 5 S NC NC NC 1914/1915 MALPASS DAVID W S M W 0 S NC NC NC 1 5/12 1919/1920 They were still in Ransom Township for the 1930 census: D. David F. Malpass died on 21 Aug 1951 in Columbus Co., NC. I cant find a source for that death date at the moment. Ellen Inez Watson Malpass died on 27 Aug 1960 in Columbus Co., NC. She is buried at Cheerful Hope Cemetery in Delco, Columbus Co., NC. |
Zadie
Idell Watson was born 10 Sep 1896 (per tombstone) in
Columbus Co, NC, presumably in the Delco community, in Ransom
Township. She was home with her parents for the 1900 census ("Zadia
I." . age 2, born Jul 1897). I did not find her on the 1910 census. She married Thomas Lide Turner on 10 Sep 1914 in Mullins, Marion County, SC. They are my ancestors. They lived near Mullins, SC. He died there on 1 Mar 1953 and she on 3 Nov 1963. They are both buried at the McMillan Cemetery near Mullins, Marion County, SC. See Thomas' page for more information on Thomas and Zadie. |
William
Henry "Willie" Watson was born 18 Apr 1899 (or 1900)
in Columbus Co, NC, presumably in the Delco community, in Ransom
Township.
He was home with his parents for the 1900 census ("William H.", age 1, Born Apr 1899). In 1910 he was with the George King family, relationship unknown, but he was listed as an adopted son. 1910 census abstract: (Explanation of this census) (Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age) 1910 COLUMBUS CO, NC Page 136A House/Family # 205/ 205--RANSOM Twp KING GEORGE W HD M W 41 M 1 17 NC NC NC 1868/1869 KING ESTER? His birth date was given as 18 Apr 1900. He was a farmer employed by R. L. Turner (who was married to his sister Mary Watson). He listed his nearest relative as Mrs. Lula Tyler, Bayboro, Horry Co., SC (his sister). In 1920, William was living with the John F. Mintz family (who seems to have married Dallie King, who would be William's adopted sister). John F. Mintz (1895) is a son of John D. Mintz (1848) and Catherine Dew (1865). There were several Watson and Mintz marriages in neighboring Brunswick County, but I dont think John Mintz is related to the Watsons. 1920 census abstract: (Explanation of this census) (Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age) 1920 COLUMBUS CO, NC Page 156B House/Family # 443/ 446--RANSOM Twp MINTZ JOHN F HD R M W 24 M NC NC NC 1895/1896 MINTZ DOLLIE E WF F W 18 M NC SC SC 1901/1902 MINTZ MARSHALL J S M W 0 S NC NC NC 2 4/12 1919/1920 MINTZ WILLIAM M S M W 0 S NC NC NC 4/12 1919/1920 KING EDWARD LO M W 9 S SC SC SC LODGER 1910/1911 WATSON WILLIAM H BO M W 20 S NC NC NC BOARDER 1899/1900 Wilie Watson is listed as a member of Piney Grove Church on 3 Jan 1926. I don't know her maiden name for certain, but it may be Thomas. I found them on the 1930 census in Marion Co., SC in Marion Township: J. Clifton Thomas, head, 22 married at age 18, born SC-SC-SC; Ruth wife, 22 married at age 18; Ernest son 3-10/12; H. Wm Watson, boarder, 30 married at age 30, born NC-NC-NC; Nona T. boarder, 17, married at age 17, born SC-SC-SC; The above record made me believe that Nona was a Thomas. I backtracked to the 1920 census and found that Julius D. Thomas (c1874) and wife Mellie (---) (c1885) had a daughter Nona Thomas born ca 1913 in Mullins, Marion Co., SC. Julius and wife were also the parents of Clifton Thomas whom the Watsons were living with in 1930. I'm told they were divorced at some point. I didnt find a divorce record for them in North Carolina 1958-2004. It is possible they divorced before 1958 or in another state. I dont know when or where William Henry Watson died. The same for Nona. I didnt find them on the Social Security Death Index (SSDI), though I found some possible matches, but no way to be sure it was them. I found a record for William Watson born 2 Feb 1898 and died May 1966 in Marion, Marion Co., SC. The birth date doesnt match, though close, but it could be him, however Marion was full of Watsons, so this could easily be someone else. |
