Levin Watson was born ca 1821/22 per his
age on the 1850 census (28). He was born in
North Carolina, probably in Bladen County. He
could be named for
Levin Watson (bef 1755), who Id bet was his
grandfather. Levin (1822) is a proven son of William Watson (1770/74) as named in a deed dated 24 Mar 1838. For the 1830 census Levin would have been about 8 years old. William Watson had an apparent son that age (aged 5-9). On 24 Mar 1838 William Watson deeded all of his personal property for love and affection to my son Levin Watson. Witnessed by Josiah Russ. (Bladen Co., NC Deed Book 8, page 374) In 1840 Levin would have been about 18 years old. William had one son aged 15-19 (born ca 1820/25) which fits. Levin Watson married Eliza Potter in the 1840s in Bladen Co., NC. She was born ca 1825/26 (age 24 in 1850). I dont know who her parents were. Her maiden name Potter is given on the death certificate of her son William B. Watson (1913 New Hanover Co., NC). On 12 Apr 1845 William Watson made a deed to Levin Watson (his son, though not so stated in the deed). For $20 William gave his interest in three surveys on the south side of Lyon Swamp conveyed to him by Joseph Allen and James Huffman. Witnessed by B. Evans and John Bush. (Bladen Co., NC Deed Book 8, page 383) They are listed on the 1850 census in Bladen. They werent near any of the other Watsons in Bladen, though in the same district with Noah Watson (c1795) though about 28 houses distant which could be close or probably not. Their next door neighbor was Dowey (Dewey?) Levin Watson died there in Oct 1859. He is listed on the 1860 census Mortality Schedule as Levy Watson age 35, Farmer, married, died October of a Cold after being sick just 4 days. Eliza and the children are listed on the 1860 census in New Hanover. No township was given, but their post office was Colvins (or Calvins) Creek. There are several Potter families nearby, probably Elizas relatives. Dowey Benson and wife Ann were just four houses away. They were next door neighbors back in 1850 in Bladen: Eliza Watson 30 widow; Wm B. 11; Jas C. 10; Eliza 3. They are still in New Hanover for the 1870 census, in Caswell Township: Elizabeth Watson 40; Bryant 20; Elizabeth 15. As before there were several Potters and Bensons nearby. Pender County was created in 1875 from the northern section of New Hanover. This included the area where the Watsons lived, and the section that borders Bladen County. I wasnt able to find the Watsons on the 1880 census. William Bryant Watson was in Bladen that year. I couldnt find his mother or brother James Calvin Watson. Eliza was with her son Bryant in Columbus Co., NC for the 1900 census. Coincidentally, (or not?) they were just 18 houses from my ancestor William H. Watson, 69, married once 32 years, born NC-NC-NC; Mary C. wife 53 married once 32 years, 6 children born, 3 living; Vincent Edwards son-in-law 30 married 5 years; Lulla J. dau 24 married 5 years, 1 child born, 1 living; Elinor C. granddaughter 3; Eliza Watson, mother, 90 widowed, 4 children born, 2 living. I didnt find Eliza on the 1920 census, nor did I find a death certificate for her, so I guess she died ca 1910-1915 in Wilmington. |
| Children of Levin and Eliza Potter Watson. They had four children according to Elizas 1910 census entry. Three of them are known from the census records: William Bryant, James Calvin and Ann Eliza. The fourth probably died young, and in between census years. Bryant and Ann Eliza both died in Wilmington, New Hanover Co., NC. James Calvin died during the 1860s, perhaps as a result of the Civil War. |
