Revision History:

26 Oct 2008 - Created by Marty Grant.

William Watson was born ca 1770/1774 per census analysis. I dont know where he was born, nor who his parents were. I strongly suspect he was a son of Levin Watson (bef 1755). They were next door neighbors in 1800.

I don't know who William Watson married, but there is a Margaret Watson who witnessed a Will in 1810. Nothing else is known of her yet. She could be his wife, or perhaps Jamess wife instead.

On 31 Mar 1798 William Watson and Moses Coleman witnessed a deed from Benjamin Rawls of Georgetown Dist., SC to Amos Coleman for 50 acres on Porters Swamp. This is present day Columbus Co., NC, and I think this is a different William Watson, probably the one listed in Georgetown Dist. SC in 1790 and Marion Dist., SC in 1800. (Bladen Co., NC Deed Book 7, page 62)

The 1800 census for Bladen shows William Watson in Capt. Locks District. He is listed next to Levin Watson who is old enough to be his father.

1 Female 16-25 (1774-1784) Mrs. Watson (1780/84)

William Watson was still in Bladen for the 1810 census. He was next door to James Watson (1778) who is probably his brother.

He was still in Bladen for the 1830 census. Noah Watson (c1795) was on the same page, but  not listed nearby. He could be his son or a nephew. William is next to William Sherman who was married to Margaret Watson (c1807), perhaps Williams daughter.

On 24 Mar 1838 William Watson deeded all his personal property to his son Levin Watson for love and affection. Witnessed by Josiah Russ. (Bladen Co., NC Deed Book 8, page 374)

On that same date (24 Mar 1838) Josiah Russ deeded 40 acres to William Watson, planter, for $40. The land was on White Oak Swamp, north east side of Cape Fear River. No witnesses. (Bladen Co., NC Deed Book 8, page 374)

William was listed on the 1840 census in Bladen County. Noah Watson (c1795) was next door. It appears that Mrs. Watson died in the 1830s for she wasnt listed with William in 1840.

On 7 Sep 1844 William Watson made a deed to James Allen for $225 for part of a 560 acre survey on the north east side of the North West River and White Oak Swamp. Witnessed by M. Monroe and James Evans. (Bladen Co., NC Deed Book 8, page 517)

On 12 Apr 1845 William Watson made a deed to Levin Watson (his son, though not so stated in the deed). For $20 William gave his interest in three surveys on the south side of Lyon Swamp conveyed to him by Joseph Allen and James Huffman. Witnessed by B. Evans and John Bush. (Bladen Co., NC Deed Book 8, page 383)

I didnt find William Watson on the 1850 census. He probably died before then.

There is a Nuncupative Will for a William Watson in Bladen County. Unfortunately there is no date on it so I dont know which William it is for. The only legatee named was John Lloyd son of David Lloyd. The witnesses were John Simpson and David Russ. The Clerk who filed it was William J. Cowan.

Ive tried to narrow down the approximate year for the above Will but cant do any better than ca 1820-1840. It seems unlikely that this Will is for William Watson (1770/74) since he had a large family.

Children of William Watson. William Watson had a large family according to the 1800 through 1840 census records. Unfortunately only one child is proven so far. There may be records that prove them, but I havent seen them yet. This many children may indicate more than one wife and also include a few step children, though more evidence is needed before making those kind of assumptions.
