Revision History:

27 Oct 2008 - Created by Marty Grant.

Jesse Watson was born before 1775 per his age on the 1820 census.

I dont know who his parents were, though he was listed next to William Watson (1770/74) and near James Watson (c1778) in 1820. This suggests a close relationship to them. They are thought to be sons of Levin Watson (bef 1755), perhaps Jesse is also Levins son.

Jesse may have been old enough to be listed on the 1790 census depending on his actual birth date. There was a Jesse Watson listed in Johnston Co., NC that year (same place Levin Watson was). He was next to David Watson (David is from the published version of the census, the original is hard to make out. It appears to say James, but Im not sure.) Keep in mind I dont know for sure that this is the same Jesse Watson who later appeared in Bladen County. Also keep in mind that this census is hard to read and the name might not even say Jesse. (There is another Jesse Watson in Caswell Co., NC in 1790, who is in Person Co., NC after that, but he isnt the same person who was later in Bladen.)

1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1790 Johnston Co., NC pg 477 Jesse Watson 1-4-3-0-1*
*1908 Published version lists 2-4-3-0-1
Analysis:
1 Male 16+ (bef 1774) Jesse Watson
4 males under 16 (1774-1790) 1-Son?
                                      2-Son?
                                      3-Son?
                                      4-Son?
3 Females (bef 1790) 1-Mrs. Watson
                                      2-Daughter?
                                      3-Daughter?

Where was Jesse in 1800? The one in Johnston was no longer there in 1800. The one from Bladen would have been 25 years old or older that year. There is one in Craven Co., NC but he is too young (16-25 or born ca 1774/84) to be the same one from 1790 Johnston. That isnt a problem though. He could still be the same one later in Bladen.

1800 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1800 Craven Co., NC pg 287 Jesse Watson 00100-00100-0-0
Analysis:
1 Male 16-25 (1774-1784) Jesse Watson
1 Female 16-25 (1774-1784) Mrs. Watson

Jesse Watson would have been 35 or older for the 1810 census. There was none of this name in Bladen, Johnston or anywhere else in North Carolina (excluding the one in Person). It should be noted that the Craven County census is lost for 1810.

Jesse Watson is on the 1820 census in Bladen Co., NC next to William Watson (1770/74) and just a few houses from James Watson (c1778). They could all easily be brothers. It is worth noting that the Jesse Watson of 1800 Craven was not there in 1820. That helps the theory that the two are one and the same person.

1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1820 Bladen Co., NC pg 156 Jesse Watson 000001-00001-0-0
Analysis:
1 Male 45+ (bef 1775) Jesse Watson (bef 1775)
1 Female 45+ (bef 1775) Mrs. Watson

Jesse Watson was not in Bladen County for the 1830 census.  The only one listed in NC that year was in Johnston and he was too young (born ca 1790/1800). There were several Jesse Watsons in other states such as Alabama, Georgia and others. Too many to try to narrow down which of them, if any, is the same Jesse, based only on census analysis.

Children of Jesse Watson. Jesse of 1820 Bladen County had no children at home. Jesse of 1790 Johnston had several children, but I dont know if that is the same person or not. Jesse of 1800 Craven had no children at home.
