James Watson was born ca 1777/78 per his age on the 1850 census
(72). That same census listed his birth place as Maryland. I dont know
who his parents were, though I strongly suspect he was a son of
Levin Watson (bef 1755). This is mainly because James was a neighbor
to
William Watson (1770/74) in 1810 who was a next door neighbor to
Levin in 1800. Strongly circumstantial, but compelling.
James would have been about 22 for the 1800 census, but he wasnt listed as a head of household as far as I could find. Levin Watson did have a son aged 16-25 (1774/84) living with him in 1800. That is probably James. I don't know who James Watson married, but there is a Margaret Watson who witnessed a Will in 1810. Nothing else is known of her yet. She could be James' wife, or perhaps William's wife. James Watson was in Bladen for the 1810 census. He was next door to William Watson (1770/74) who is probably his brother. The oldest apparent child seems to predate 1800, so perhaps James should be listed somewhere on the 1800 census other than with his parents. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Bladen Co., NC pg 207 James Watson 21010-10010-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male 26-44 (1765-1784) James Watson (c1778) 1 male 10-15 (1794-1800) Son? (1804/10) In 1820 he was still in Bladen Co., NC just a few houses from Jesse Watson (bef 1775) and William Watson (1770/74). 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Bladen Co., NC pg 156 James Watson 000001-22010-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male 45+ (bef 1775) James Watson (c1778) 1 Female 26-44 (1775-1794) Mrs. Watson (1780/84) 2 females 10-15 (1804-1810) 1-Daughter? Fryar witnessed a deed wherein John Windham and other heirs of Isaac Windham, deceased, gave a power of attorney to Elias Windham. All the parties except the deceased were from Darlington Dist., SC. I think this also includes the James Watson who witnessed it since there was a man of that name in that county at the time. Therefore this probably isnt James Watson of Bladen County. There are two more deeds just like this for other Windhams. (Bladen Co., NC Deed Book 11, page 247 30 Sep 1821; Book 11, page 249, 13 Dec 1822; Book 1 page 248, 8 Jan 1824) He was still in Bladen for the 1830 census. He wasnt near any of the other Watsons. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Bladen Co., NC pg 70 James Watson 0000000100000-0011011000000 Analysis: 1 Male 50-59 (1770-1780) James Watson (c1778) 1 Female 40-49 (1780-1790) Mrs. Watson (1780/84) 1 female 30-39 (1790-1800) Sister? Sister-in-law? Other? 1 female 15-19 (1810-1815) Daughter? (1810/15) 1 female 10-14 (1815-1820) Daughter? (1815/20) I didnt find James Watson on the 1840 census. He wasnt dead, but not listed in Bladen or Brunswick County as far as I could find. He was probably residing with a married daughter and therefore not listed by name. He was listed on the 1850 census in neighboring Brunswick Co., NC. James B. Watson (c1835) was with him, probably a grandson, or possibly a son. Elizabeth Campbell (c1790) was also with him, relationship unknown. She could be the same extra female with the family back in 1830. That suggests she is a sister-in-law or a widowed sister. James wife Mrs. Watson had apparently died before 1850. 1850 census abstract: (Explanation of this census) (Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age) BLADEN CO., NC Page 141B House/Family # 51/ 51 -- NORTHWEST DISTRICT Twp WATSON JAMES 72 M W MILLER MARYLAND 1777/1778 WATSON JAMES B 15 M W NC 1834/1835 CAMPBELL ELIZABETH 60 F W NC 1789/1790 I couldnt find James Watson on the 1860 census. He may have died before then. Elizabeth Campbell (c1790) who was with him in 1850 (and perhaps in 1830) was in Bladen in 1860 with the R. C. Kelly (c1808) and Mary (---) Kelly (c1812) family. |
Children of James Watson. James Watson had
a large family according to the 1810 through 1830 census records.
Unfortunately none of the children are proven so far. There may be
records that prove them, but I havent seen them yet. James B. Watson (c1835) is almost certainly a grandson, but I dont know who his parents were. I wasnt able to find him on any census past 1850. |
Unknown Son (1794/1800). James Watson had an
apparent son this age with him on the 1810 census (aged 10-15). James
wasnt listed on the census in 1800. This son was gone from James
household by 1820, so he may have died or moved out by then.
This could be Noah Watson (c1795). |
Unknown Son (1800/10). James Watson had an apparent son this age with him on the 1810 census aged under 10 (ca 1800/10). He was gone by 1810. I dont know who this son was. |
Unknown Son (1800/10). James Watson had an apparent son this age with him on the 1810 census aged under 10 (ca 1800/10). He was gone by 1810. I dont know who this son was. |
Unknown Daughter (1804/10). James Watson had an apparent daughter this age with him on the 1810 census aged under 10 (born ca 1800/10), and still home in 1820 aged 10-15 (ca 1804/10), but gone by 1830 so probably married or dead by then. |
Unknown Daughter (1804/10). James
Watson had an apparent daughter this age with him on the 1820 census
aged 10-15 (ca 1804/10). She was not with James in 1810 so
perhaps born in 1810 after the census taker came around. She was gone by 1830 so probably married or dead by then. |
Unknown Daughter (1810/15). James Watson had an apparent daughter this age with him on the 1820 census aged under 10 (born ca 1810/20), and still home in 1830 aged 15-19 (ca 1810/15). |
Unknown Daughter (1815/20). James Watson had an apparent daughter this age with him on the 1820 census aged under 10 (born ca 1810/20), and still home in 1830 aged 10-14 (ca 1815/20). |
