- !NOTES:I am interested in this John Davis because he freed his slave Grace in 1764. She is my ancestor, I think. That makes it possible that John, or some other member of his family could be the father of her children who used the Davis surname, including her son Richard Davis.
!NOTES:There were at least four John Davis's in Brunswick in 1765:
1- John Esquire, made his Will 8 Oct 1765, sons William, John and Roger. (This John)
2- John son of above.
3- John Planter, made his Will 21 Jul 1765, sons Thomas and John.
4- John son of above.

To all to whom these presents shall or may concern, I John Davis of Brunswick County aforesaid, Esquire do by these presents set free my Negro woman GRACE for and in consideration of her meritorious services and I do hereby confirm her said freedom in as full and ample manner if she said woman Grace had never been a slave.
Witness my hand and seal this the thirteenth day of April one thousand seven hundred and sixty four.

24 Nov 1765 John Davis Esq declared before John Moore and Thomas Davis that he wanted daughter Justina Dobbs to have the use of his dwelling house and mill until her brother John could provide a house for her.

** Note: There is no record here of when this Will was presented in court after John Davis's death. Wills aren't typically recorded in deed books anyway, so perhaps the probate records are elsewhere.
