!NOTES:From 1802 to 1805 a James Turner (not this same man) was Governor of North Carolina, thus his name appears in the Deed Books and Grantor index many times in Richmond Co., NC for Land Grants. He is usually listed simply as "J. Turner" but sometimes as "Jas Turner." Since the Governor only appears during those few years, and in relation to Land Grants, there shouldn't be any confusion in the records between the two men. Gov. Turner was from a different part of the state.
It is very unusual for the Governor's name to be listed as the grantor in the deed indexes even though his name is on the Grant. It was technically the State that granting the land and usually indexed that way.;

** James L. Turner 25 Nov 1772 Halifax Co., VA - 17 Sep 1812 Anson Co., NC, buried Turner-Richardson Cemetery there. See findagrave.com entry for him. Good information there, but nothing that connects him to the James in 1800 Richmond Co., NC. Says James L. Turner is a son of Cpt. James Turner (c1741-1809) who died in Maury Co., TN.;
