!NOTES:B/D Unknown, but census records indicate born ca 1765/1774:
1790 = 16+ (bef 1774)
1800 = 26-44 (1755/74)
1810 = 26-44 (1765/84)
1820 = 45+ (bef 1775);
!NOTES:Not a proven child of Matthew Patterson, but he is certainly closely related to him, probably a son. The evidence:
(1) Samuel named oldest son "Matthew".
(2) Matthew (Sr) had an apparent son Samuel's age with him on 1790 census, who was gone by 1800 (Samuel married by then).
(3) Samuel was chain bearer for Matthew's 1779 (or 1787) survey for land on Puzzle Creek. This shows close relationship.
(4) Samuel received land grant on Puzzle Creek in 1796. Matthew living same place since at least 1787. They were neighbors there.
(5) Matthew moved to Buncombe Co., NC ca 1790/92, Samuel soon followed, lived in same area there.
(6) Samuel witnessed a 1799 deed of Matthew's.;
!NOTES:I have Samuel's wife as Elizabeth, but to-date I've found no solid proof that she was his wife. She appears on the 1830 census as an apparent widow with the very same neighbors he had the previous census. She does match his wife age-wise. It seems quite likely she is Samuel's wife, but some additional evidence would be nice.;
