- !NOTES:Maiden name Stonecypher per "Tennessee Smithology", a neice of the 2nd wife, also named Catherine Stonecypher. However, I've seen no proof of her maiden name.;
!NOTES:Depositions from May 1843 court case show that Catherine was apparently married to a Mr. Grindstaff prior to her marriage to Edward Smith (ca 1798). This is proven by Nicholas Grindstaff (c1776) stating that he was a half brother to Nancy Smith Heaton Morley (c1798) a proven child of Edward Smith and Catherine. Another half sibling is mentioned, Sarah, wife of John Stout. In neither case did they state who their father was.
