- !NOTES:Marty Grant's 5th Great Grand Parent.;
!BIRTH:Estimated at 1755/60 based on several census age entries:
1790 = none (bef 1790)
1800 = 26-44 (1755/74)
1810 = 45 + (bef 1765)
1820 = 45 + (bef 1775)
1830 = 70-79 (1750/60)
1840 = 80-89 (1750/60)
Combined = (1755/1760)
1850 = 105 (1744/45) * Disagrees with all others;
!BIRTHPLACE:Ireland from 1850 Census Mortality Schedule. But I think Albemarle Co, VA is more likely, if she is a daughter of Alexander MACKEY;
!NOTE:Martha MACKEY Grant seems to be full of contraditions and mystery. Her marriage bond lists her name as "Mashew Mcy" or possibly "Mashew Mcg". The two published abstracts of the Rutherford Co, NC Marriages list her as "McGEE", but that is not correct. There were no McGEE's in Rutherford Co, NC at that time. Her name is most likely MACKEY, aka McKEY, aka McY. The fact that this is a MACKEY is further supported by the Bondsman for the marriage, a Robert YOUNG. Robert YOUNG was married to Susanna MACKEY, daughter of Alexander MACKEY who died 1793. Robert YOUNG Witnessed the Will of Alexander MACKEY also. Unfortunately Martha MACKEY Grant was not named in Alexander MACKEY's Will, but I still think she belongs there in his family somehow. It is possible that she was already a Widow in 1788 when she married Andrew GRANT, and that her first husband was a MACKEY who had died prior to then. This Mr. MACKEY could be a son or somehow related to Alexander MACKEY's family. This would explain why she wasn't named in his Will. Robert YOUNG, in that case, would be her former Brother-in-law (or even her brother, if her maiden name happened to be YOUNG prior to marriage to a MACKEY). A lot of supposition here, but that is our only option, as few records exist for her. "Mashew" is apparently a variant of "Martha", though not a common one;

!MORTALITY:1850 Macon Co, NC Tennessee Valley Twp Martha GRANT, 105 (1744/1745), White, female, widow, born Ireland, died Feb 1850 of Old age after being sick for 6 days.
NOTE: Her age was undoubtedly exagerrated somewhat here, as all other records indicate she couldn't have been more than 95, but no less than 89 or 90, also she was probably not born in Ireland, although it is certainly possible;
