!BASTARDY BOND:Nov 1866 Brunswick Co., NC
Mahala Davis
"Refused to swear" meaning she wouldn't name the father. However, it is quite possible one of the two bondsmen is the father, but that isn't proven. If true though, it was most likely William Smith Jr for he was her age and unmarried then.
Bondsmen: Mahala Davis, W.R. Skipper, William Smith Jr
See 111248 for William Smith, and 111222 for William R. Skipper;

!CENSUS:1900 x
!NOTES:His name isn't known. It is possible he is either W. R. Skipper or William Smith Jr, both of whom were bondsmen for the 1866 bastardy bond for Mahala Davis. William R. Skipper lived in the same region as the Davis family. There were several William Smiths, so I haven't tried to trace them too much. See below for more on both men.;
!BASTARDY BOND:Nov 1866 Brunswick Co., NC
Mahala Davis
Bondsmen: Mahala Davis, W.R. Skipper, William Smith Jr;
!NOTES-SPECULATION:William Smith Jr signed the bastardy bond. He could be the father of Mahala's child.
I'm reasonably sure William B. Smith, grandson of William Smith, is the one, but he wasn't the only William Smith in the area at the time.
