I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Solomon Collins. He may be somehow related to my ancestor Jonah Collins (c1774).

Solomon Collins was born ca 1831/32 in South Carolina, possibly in Marion District where he was living later on (by 1860).

I don't know who Solomon's parents are. He was not listed on the 1850 census in Marion, but appeared there in 1860 with a wife and kids already. He was not near any other Collins that year, though in 1880 he was just a few houses from Franklin Collins, who might be his brother, in fact, I think it is very likely they are brothers, but I have no evidence other than proximity and similar names for their children. There is an older Solomon Collins (c1814), who might be an Uncle or cousin to this Solomon, but that relationship is just a guess.

Solomon would have been about 8 years old by the 1840 census, so he should be enumerated in the 5-9 age group (born ca 1830/35).  Several Marion District Collins families had apparent sons that age, but all of them are already proven to be other people.  That means that Solomon probably wasn't in Marion in 1840. None of the Collins in neighboring Horry, Darlington, Williamsburg nor Marlboro had sons that age either. There were many other Collins families in South Carolina in 1840, but I think I checked all the ones close to Marion. Elias Collins in Georgetown was listed in the "Free Colored" columns, but had a son "under 10" which would fit.

I did not find Solomon Collins on the 1850 census, at least not in Marion District. I checked Collins households in nearby Horry, Darlington, Georgetown, and Williamsburg, and did not find him.

Solomon Collins married Frances --- before ca 1852, somewhere, perhaps in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know her maiden name.

In 1860, Solomon Collins and family were listed in Marion District. They were not near any other Collins families. They were listed with Post office of Ella Grove. Solomon was listed as an Engineer. I'm not sure which kind of Engineer, whether mechanical, or Engineer of a Train.

In 1870, Solomon and family were in Reaves Township, just ten houses from John Collins, son of the elder Solomon Collins (c1814). This may be coincidental, or an indication of a relationship.

In 1880, Solomon had moved to McMillan Township and was just a few houses from Franklin Collins, possibly a brother, since his origins are also obscure, and they are of compatible age to be siblings. Also, Solomon named a son "Franklin", so that is consistent with them being siblings. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Children

Solomon Collins and wife Frances had at least 9 children, as proven by the 1860 through 1880 census records. See report section below for more information on them.
