Aggy Grant was born ca 1770/71 per her age on the 1850
census (79). She was born in South Carolina according to that census. "Aggy" could be short for "Agnes" or "Agatha" or perhaps it isn't short for anything. I don't know if Aggy was born a Grant and never married or if she was married to a Mr. Grant who died prior to the 1850 census. Unfortunately the 1850 census is the only record we have (and possibly the 1840 census). If she is a widow I don't know who her husband may have been. She doesn't seem to fit with any of the known Grant families of Marlboro or neighboring Richmond Co., NC. Aggy is listed on the 1850 census in Marlboro with Duncan Grant (c1816) who may be her son or grandson or nephew. It is also possible that she isn't a Grant at all, but her surname wasn't listed in 1850 making it appear she was a Grant. If that is the case then she is probably Duncan's mother-in-law instead of a blood relative. Aggy would have been 29 by the time of the 1800 census. The only Grant in Marlboro at that time was Mary Grant, and she had no one Aggy's age with her. Aggy would have been about 39 for the 1810 census. Malachi Grant (c1790) was in Marlboro then, but he was living alone. Richard S. Grant (1780/84) was listed, though I don't think Aggy is his wife. There is a John Grant (bef 1765) in Richmond Co., NC in 1810. His wife is listed as age 45 and up, which is too old for Aggy, but it could be her anyway. Aggy would have been about 49 for the 1820 census. Again only Malachi and Richard were in Marlboro. Neither had a female her age living with them. There were no Grants in neighboring Richmond in 1820. In 1830 Aggy would have been about 59 years old. None of the Grants in Marlboro or Richmond had a female that age (or close) living with them. Aggy would have been about 69 for the 1840 census. The only Grant in Marlboro or Richmond to have a female that age is Duncan Grant, the very same person she was living with in 1850. It is probably her with him in 1840 as well aged 60-69 (c1770/80). If this is her (as I'm sure it is), then she was widowed sometime before 1840. However I found nothing to indicate who her husband may have been, though we can be reasonably certain he was dead before 1840. As noted earlier, Aggy was with Duncan Grant in 1850. The only other Grant nearby was Drusilla Grant (c1820), either a widow or single mother. She was 9 houses away.
I didn't find Aggy on the 1860 census in Marlboro or elsewhere. She probably died before then or perhaps remarried. |
