I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin 6 times removed to Alexander Grant.
Alexander Grant was born ca 1810/11 (per 1850 census), presumably in Rutherford County, North Carolina.
Special thanks to Patt Thomas, Cat Tindell and Bob Nance for data shared on this family, especially pertaining to the various children of Alexander Grant.
I haven't seen any direct proof, but I'm reasonably sure that Alexander is a son of Thomas Grant and Amy Coxey. First of all, Thomas and Amy did have a son about his age who is otherwise unaccounted for. Secondly Alexander lived in the same county with Thomas and in the same general area, so it seems reasonable to assume Thomas was his father. Absolute proof would be nice, but as far as I know, none has been found.
Alexander (or someone his age group) seemed to be at home with his parents for the 1820 census, but not with them in 1830, nor listed as head of household himself that year. He would have been about 19 then, so he could easily be in another household as a laborer, or something like that.
Around 1830-1831, Alexander Grant married Susan Summer (or Sumner) in Buncombe Co, NC. Susan was born ca 1814/15, presumably in Buncombe County. I once thought her maiden name was "Lytle", possibly a daughter of Millington Lytle (Little) who was a neighbor of the Grants, but that seems unlikely now. I don't know what her actual maiden name is, but I no longer believe it to be Lytle. Her maiden name may be Summers, for Alexander and Susans son John E. Grants death certificate listed his mother as "Susie Summers". (Thanks to Sue Bell and Cat Tindell for sharing that). This could be entirely accurate, though Im slightly hesitant due to the fact that the source is a death certificate. Death Certificates are notoriously inaccurate regarding the names of parents of the deceased. However, it is all we have to go on at present, so perhaps it is accurate.
Alexander Grant was listed as a voter in the 1835 Congressional Elections, he voted in Cany Creek Precinct in Buncombe Co, NC, as did his father Thomas and brother Andrew.
Alexander Grant was listed on the 1840 census in Buncombe Co, NC. He was not listed near his parents, but several pages from them.

On 6 May 1843, Alexander Grant sold 50 acres of land on Cane Creek (where and when did he get this?) to Millington Lytle, James Lytle and Littleton Lytle. This deed is one of the main reasons I thought Alexander's wife might be a Lytle, since they named a son "Littleton Grant", perhaps after Littleton Lytle, a possible brother to Susan. However, that was just speculation. I have not seen this original deed, only a brief abstract, so the original may contain more information. (Buncombe Co, NC Deed Book 43 page 71).
Around 1849 or so, Alexander and family moved south west to Gilmer County, Georgia, quite possibly residing in the section that later became Fannin County (though I'm not sure where they lived precisely). They were listed in Gilmer for the 1850 census. No known Grant connections were in that county that year, so I don't know what drew them there.

Sometime in the 1850's, perhaps before 1852, Alexander and family moved over into neighboring Polk County, Tennessee.
They were listed on the 1860 census in Polk County, in the 8th District. All of the younger children (born in the 1850's) were listed as born in North Carolina, so that is probably a census error, as later records show these same people as born in Tennessee.

Right after the Civil War, Alexander Grant's name showed up on several Cherokee County, North Carolina marriage records, as a Justice of the Peace. Cherokee bordered Polk County, Tennessee, so perhaps he didn't go too far, but it seems interesting that he could live in one state, and do public business in another. Of course, he may have actually lived in Cherokee County at the time, which sort of seems likely, for in 1866, one of his daughters married in Cherokee County, and the law in those days required the marriage bond to be issued in the county of residence of the bride (though the actual marriage could be elsewhere). This indicates that Alexander and family did make a brief move to neighboring Cherokee County, and were there at least in 1865 and 1866, before returning to Polk County, Tennessee before 1870.
The 1870 census shows the family in Polk County, and still in the 8th Civil District.

They were still in Polk for the 1880 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
I have no data on them after 1880.
Alexander and Susan had 15 children per the 1840 through 1880 census records.
William Grant was born ca 1830/31 in Buncombe Co, NC. He was apparently home with his parents in 1840 (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35), and home with them in 1850 ("William" age 19, born NC). He may be the same William Grant, age 18 who was listed a few pages away in 1850 with another family as a hired laborer.
William was not with his parents in 1860, nor have I found him anywhere else that year so far.
Silas Grant was born ca 1832/33 in Buncombe Co, NC. He was apparently home with his parents in 1840 (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and home with them in 1850 ("Silas" age 17, born NC).
Silas Grant married Mary M. --- before 1860, presumably in Polk County, Tennessee. Researcher Carol Ann Tindell says that Mary was a "Roberts".
Silas and family were listed on the 1860 census in Polk County, Tennessee just a couple of houses from his parents.

Wiley Grant was born ca 1834/35 in Buncombe Co, NC. He was apparently home with his parents in 1840 (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and home with them in 1850 ("Wiley" age 15, born NC).
I did not find him in 1860.
Mitchell A. Grant was born ca 1835/36 in Buncombe Co, NC. He was apparently home with his parents in 1840 (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and home with them in 1850 ("Mitchel" age 14, born NC).
I did not find him in 1860.
Researcher Helen Gibson tells me that Mitchell married Lodica Bates on 20 Aug 1857 in Fannin County, Georgia, and that Mitchell died very shortly after marriage, possibly in Fannin County.
I did not find Lodica on the 1860 census. According to Helen, she later married James Wiley Childress ca 1865 in McMinn Co, TN.
Emaline Grant was born ca 1836/37 in Buncombe Co, NC. She was apparently home with her parents in 1840 (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and home with them in 1850 ("Emaline" age 13, born NC).
I did not find her in 1860, so probably married or dead by then.
Elizabeth Grant was born ca 1837/38 in Buncombe Co, NC. She was apparently home with her parents in 1840 (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and home with them in 1850 ("Elizabeth" age 12, born NC).
I did not find her in 1860, so probably married or dead by then.
Littleton Grant was born ca 1841/42 in Buncombe Co, NC. He was home with his parents in 1850 ("Letta" age 8, born NC), and still home with them in 1860 ("Litte" age 19, born NC).
Littleton Grant married Amanda --- before 1870, presumably in Polk County, Tennessee. I don't know Amanda's maiden name.
They were listed on the 1870 census in Polk County, in the same district with his parents, but not listed near them.

Margaret Grant was born ca 1842/43 in Buncombe Co, NC. She was home with parents in 1850 ("Margaret" age 7, born NC), and still home with them in 1860 ("Margaret" age 18, born NC). She was not home in 1870, so probably married or dead by then.
James Grant was born ca 1844/45 in Buncombe Co, NC. He was home with parents in 1850 ("Jane" (sic) age 5, born NC), and still home with them in 1860 ("James" age 16, born NC). I didn't find him in 1870.
Mary Grant was born ca 1846/47 in Buncombe Co, NC. She was home with parents in 1850 ("Mary" age 3, born NC), and still home with them in 1860 ("Mary" age 13, born NC).
Mary Grant married John E. Trantham on or after 18 Nov 1866 in Cherokee Co, NC.
John and Mary were listed on the 1870 census in Polk Co, TN. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
John died in the 1870-1880 timeframe.
Mary was listed on the 1880 census in Polk Co, TN. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Susan E. Grant was born ca 1847/48 in Buncombe Co, NC. She was home with parents in 1850 ("Susan E" age 2, born NC), and still home with them in 1860 ("Susan" age 10, born NC) and still home in 1870 ("Sousan", age 20, born TN). She was not home in 1880, so probably married or dead by then.
John Grant was born ca 1851/52 in Polk Co, TN. He was home with parents in 1860 ("John" age 8, born NC), and still home with them in 1870 ("John" age 18, born TN). I don't have him in 1880.
Roxanna Grant was born ca 1852/53 in Polk Co, TN. She was home with parents in 1860 ("Roxannah" age 7, born NC), and still home with them in 1870 ("Roxannah" age 11, born TN). She was not home in 1880, so probably married or dead by then.
Elvira E. Grant was born 10 Nov 1854 (per Bob Nance) in Polk Co, TN. She was home with parents in 1860 ("Alvira" (or "Alvina") age 6 born NC), She was not home in 1870, so probably married or dead by then.
Bob Nance has done some considerable research on his ancestor Elvira E. Grant Humphrey Brown (1854-1924), and based on his work he has concluded that his Elvira is the same person as Alexander's daughter "Alvira". After reviewing his research, I feel he is correct. I originally had his Elvira matched up with Elvira S. Grant (1856) daughter of James Albert "Burton" Grant, but now I realize they are two different people.
Elvira E. Grant had a child born ca 1871 in Georgia, so she must be in Georgia somewhere for the 1870 census.
Around 1870-1871, Elvira S. Grant was associated with a William Humphrey (per Bob Nance), though it does not appear they were married, for she continued to use the Grant surname on later records, though her two children she had with him were alternately listed as Grants, and later as Humphreys (which they kept). Their first child was born ca 1870/71, and their second (and last) was born ca 1872/73, both reported as born in Georgia (per 1880 census). Bob Nance has been searching for more information on William Humphrey and recently found some data on him and his family (contact Bob for more info).
Elvira E. Grant and her children were listed in Jackson County, North Carolina for the 1880 census. All were listed as Grants, though the two oldest were actually Humphreys, and the younger ones were Browns (children of Thomas Brown whom Elvira would later marry). I don't know what drew Elvira to Jackson County. She was in Canada Township which was on the eastern side of Jackson, bordering both Haywood and Transylvania Counties. Bob says that she met Thomas Brown in TN, and since he was from Jackson, they returned there to live. That makes sense to me.

On 20 Aug 1882, Thomas Brown age 49, married Elvira Grant age 27 in Jackson County, North Carolina at Levi Brown's house. (Levi was two houses away from Elvira in 1880). Thomas Brown was born ca 1832/33 in Haywood Co, NC, son of John Brown and Violet Fortner.
I did not find the family on the 1900 census in Jackson County. Bob Nance informed me they moved to Greenville, South Carolina at some point. It seems reasonable they had moved before 1900. I suspect we will find them on the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census in Greenville County, South Carolina.
Elvira E. Grant Brown died on 7 May 1924 in Greenville, Greenville County, South Carolina (all facts per Bob Nance). According to Bob, her death certificate gives her father as "Thomas Grant", and leaves her mother blank. It should be noted that death certificates are notorious for getting the parents names wrong.
I don't know when or where Thomas Brown died.
Jane Grant was born ca 1855/56 in Polk Co, TN. She was home with parents in 1860 ("Jane" age 4 born NC), She was not home in 1870, so probably married or dead by then.
Another researcher gave her name as Malinda Jane, and that she married Andrew Allen Thurman.
