I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grandnephew of Thomas Grant.
Thomas Grant was born ca 1772/73 in VA, perhaps Louisa County. He is a proven son of William Grant and Mary of Rutherford Co, NC. His birth year could be off by as much as three years based on other evidence.
Thomas's father William Grant moved to what is now Rutherford Co, NC around 1771. It seems that the rest of the family joined them a year or two later, since Thomas was born in VA ca 1773 (per the 1850 and 1860 census).
At the time of the 1790 census, Thomas was still at home with his father William Grant in Rutherford Co, NC, probably one of the sons listed as age 16 and up (born before 1774).
The first record found for Thomas is a Mortgage dated 5 Oct 1792 between William Grant and Alexander McBeth. Thomas was a witness to this document. The object of the mortgage was Lot number 1 in Rutherfordton. Generally speaking, a person must be at least 21 years old to witness a transaction, so if that were the case, Thomas would have been born ca 1771 or before. This is only slightly different from his reported age on the 1850 census (age 77) and 1860 census (age 86). (Rutherford Co, NC Wills and Miscellaneous Records Book 1 page 8).
On 9 Oct 1794 William Grant made his Will in Rutherford Co, NC and named Thomas as his son. Here is what William said about Thomas:
... Item It is my desire that the land whereon I now live after my wife's death be the property of my son Thomas Grant and his heirs forever and my desire is that my daughter Clemy Grant should have a right to live on the said land with my wife and son if they can't agree to build her a house for herself. ...
On 22 May 1795 Thomas Grant received a land grant from the State of North Carolina for 50 acres on Mountain Creek. (Rutherford Co, NC Deed Book 7/9 page 275).
On 20 Oct 1797 Thomas Grant witnessed a deed between Archibald Young and David Miller for land on Walnut Creek. (Rutherford Co, NC Deed Book 7 page 76).
On 26 Dec 1797 Thomas Grant was the bondsman for the marriage of John Bryant and Polly Morris.
On 10 Jan 1798 Thomas Grant and his brother Alexander Grant witnessed a deed of James Morris Sr and his wife Elizabeth (Elizabeth Grant, possible sister of Thomas) to James Morris. This was 100 acres on Grants Old Mill Creek. This is the same land that William Grant and Mary had sold to James Morris earlier. (Rutherford Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 381).
Thomas Grant was not listed on the 1800 census, but was probably still at home with his widowed mother Mary, who was listed in Rutherford Co, NC with a son aged 26-44 (born 1755/1774) which fits perfectly for Thomas.
On 5 Aug 1801 Thomas Grant obtained a marriage bond to marry Amy Coxey. Thomas' brother Andrew Grant served as bondsman. The actual wedding date is unknown, but would be on or shortly after 5 Aug 1801. I don't know who Amy's parents were. The 1800 census shows a John Coxey and William Coxey in Rutherford Co, NC. John had no apparent daughters Amy's age, but William had three girls age 16-25 (born 1774/84) and she would fit there nicely. This doesn't prove that William Coxey is her father, but it is a strong possibility.
On 14 Dec 1803 Thomas Grant sold his 50 acres on Mountain Creek (granted to him in 1795) to Jesse Taylor. This was the only land that Thomas was ever known to have owned. He was to inherit his fathers land after the death of his mother Mary, but we don't know when she died. (Rutherford Co, NC Deed Book 24/26 page 235).
After the above transaction, Thomas has very little in the way of public records over the next several decades.
In 1810 Thomas was listed in Rutherford Co on page 378, but this census was alphabetized, so we can't determine who Thomas's neighbors were.

This census shows several daughters who have so far been unidentified. Three of these daughters were no longer with him by the 1820 census. Sometime in the 1810 to 1820 timeframe, Thomas moved to Buncombe Co, NC and settled somewhere near Fairview. I found no record of him owning land in Buncombe County, NC.
He was listed on the 1820 census in Buncombe Co, NC. His nearest neighbors included the Reed, Trantham, Whitaker and other families known to live around Fairview.

Thomas Grant was not found on the 1830 census in Buncombe Co, NC. One was listed in 1830 Rutherford, but it isn't a very good fit, and might actually be his nephew Thomas Grant (son of Clementine Grant) instead, though it isn't a very good fit for him either.

Since the 1830 record isn't a perfect fit, it may indeed not be our Thomas Grant (c1773), but his nephew instead, who was born ca 1797. Of course the problems with the listing could be explained as a common census problem. The data listed was obtained from someone other than a knowledgeable family member, perhaps a neighbor instead.
Just to see if Thomas was listed incorrectly in 1830, I did a little comparative analysis based on who was living near him in 1820. In 1820 Buncombe Co, NC Thomas Grant's neighbor on one side was Charles Fraddy (who was next to Joel Lewis) and on the other side was Eldred Reed (who was next to James Reed). In 1830 three of these were listed on page 250 of the Buncombe Co, NC census. Eldred and James Reed were still next to one another. Charles Fraddy was a few households away, as where the other names from 1820 such as Whitakers, Garren's etc. Only Joel Lewis was not found. However, interestingly, a Joel Lewis was found on page 533 in Rutherford Co, NC. The same page as the Thomas Grant listing. This tells me that the 1830 Thomas Grant in Rutherford was indeed our Thomas Grant (c1773). The problems of course are the age enumerations just don't agree with earlier and later data, so based on that we can't be sure if any of the data in the 1830 listing for Thomas' family is accurate. For example, he should have still had three sons with him, but this census only shows one.
On 20 Feb 1830 Thomas Grant in Rutherford County, NC entered 50 acres on West fork of Flat Creek in Rutherford County, bordering Robert Wright. Robert Wright was the son of Isaac and Chaney Wright, and interestingly, Chaney (who was widowed by 1830) was listed there near Thomas Grant in 1830 Rutherford Co, NC. She was on the same page. She and many of her children also wound up in the Fairview area of Buncombe Co, NC. All this adds up to prove that the 1830 Thomas Grant in Rutherford was the same Thomas. Why he moved back to Rutherford is unknown, however it is possible that he didn't move at all, but the county lines weren't clearly defined at that time. My map clearly shows that Flat Creek is completely within the bounds of Buncombe County, and in Fairview Township. This area may have been in dispute around 1830, as that would explain both the census and the 1830 land entry. I found no record showing this 50 acres actually being granted to Thomas Grant.
In 1835, a Congressional Election was held in the district including much of western NC. Fortunately, the voter lists for this event survived. The 1835 voter list for Buncombe Co, NC, and Cany Creek Precinct show Thomas Grant, Andrew Grant and Alexander Grant as voters. Cany Creek (now Cane Creek) flows right through Fairview.
The 1840 census shows Thomas Grant in Buncombe Co, NC apparently still in the Fairview area (based on the familiar names of his neighbors). His apparent sons Andrew and Alexander were listed on different pages, but based on their neighbors, really in the same general area.

By the time of the 1850 census, Thomas and Amy were still in Buncombe. Thomas was the only member of his family (among his brothers and sisters) to live long enough to be listed on the 1850 census. He was in Buncombe Co, NC still in the Fairview area, based on his neighbors. He was not listed with any real property, so apparently owned no land. His occupation was blank. His wife Amy, and their two apparent daughters Elizabeth and Abigail were residing with them. A young Joseph Grant, age 7 was also with them. He was probably a grandson, or even a great grandson. I don't know who his parents were.

By the time of the 1860 census, Amy had apparently died. Elizabeth and Abigail were still at home, but Joseph had moved out and was living with another family in neighboring McDowell Co, NC. (The Fortune family) where he was listed as a laborer. Thomas was listed as a Cooper in this census.

Thomas had a personal property value, but no real property value listed. Thomas, nor Elizabeth or Abigail were found on the 1870 census. However, Elizabeth and Abigail reappeared in 1880 residing next door to their nephew Henry Grant (son of Andrew) in Buncombe Co, NC, Fairview Township. They had William Grant, age 19 (born ca 1861) residing with them, listed as "Nephew". I'm fairly sure this is the William who was a son of James Grant, their brother.
Thomas Grant didn't leave a Will nor any kind of Estate records, or any other clear evidence of who his children were. He and Amy Coxey seemed to have had at least three sons, and numerous daughters per the various early census records. I'm reasonably sure that Andrew and Alexander are his sons, and I'm fairly sure that James is their son, and that Elizabeth and Abigail are their daughters. The rest are unknown so far.

Andrew Grant was born 4 Apr 1810 and died 3 Oct 1855, and is buried at Cane Creek Cemetery in Fairview, in Buncombe Co, NC. He married Sarah Whitaker ca 1832. She was born 12 Jun 1812 and died 13 May 1883. She is also buried at Cane Creek. Andrew named his first son "Joshua" probably after Sarah's father Joshua Whitaker, and he named his second son "Thomas" probably after his father. Andrew first appeared on the 1835 voter list in Buncombe Co, NC in Cany Creek Precinct, and was listed on the 1840 and 1850 census in Buncombe Co, NC, both times in the Fairview area. His widow Sarah was listed on the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census in Buncombe Co, NC in Fairview Township. I haven't seen any direct proof that Andrew is a son of Thomas, but it seems highly likely that he is.

Alexander Grant was born ca 1810/11 in Rutherford or Buncombe Co, NC. He married Susan --- ca 1832 in Buncombe Co, NC. Certain evidence leads me to believe she is a daughter of Millington Lytle, but I have no direct proof of that. Alexander first appeared in 1835 on the voter list in Buncombe Co, NC in Cany Creek Precinct and was listed on the 1840 census in Buncombe Co, NC. In 1843 Alexander Grant deeded 50 acres on Cane Creek to Millington, James and Littleton Little. I don't know where he obtained this land. I suspect that it was inherited via his wife, assuming she was a Lytle as well. By 1850 Alexander and family had moved to Gilmer Co, GA and by 1860 were in Polk Co, TN where they were listed on the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census. Polk Co, TN borders Cherokee Co, NC, and during the 1865 timeframe, Alexander was found in Cherokee Co, NC performing marriages as a Justice of the Peace. If he actually lived in Cherokee Co, NC (as it seems like he did) it was only ca 1865 to 1866 or thereabouts. Then it was back to Polk Co, TN. I haven't seen any direct proof that Alexander is a son of Thomas, but it seems highly likely that he is.

She was not found on the 1870 census.
She was on the 1880 census in Fairview Township, Buncombe Co, NC as a head of household, along with her sister Abigail and a nephew William Grant.

I did not find Elizabeth Grant on the 1900 census. She either died between 1880 and 1900, or else moved away somewhere, or married someone yet unknown.
Abigail Grant was born ca 1827/28 (per 1850 census) or ca 1829/30 (per 1860 census), presumably in Buncombe Co, NC. She apparently never married. She was living with her father Thomas in the 1850 and 1860 census. She was not found in 1870, but by 1880 was listed in Fairview Township, Buncombe Co, NC with her sister Elizabeth (who was the head of household). This 1880 entry listed her as "Alvira" instead of "Abigail", so that is either a mistake, or perhaps she had two given names, as in "Abigail Alvira".
It would seem that Abigail had at least one child out of wedlock, named "William Grant", who was with her in 1880.
I did not find Abigail Grant (nor her son William) on the 1900 census. She either died between 1880 and 1900, or else moved away somewhere, or married someone yet unknown.
Joseph or Josiah Grant was born ca 1843 in Buncombe Co, NC. He is not a son of Thomas Grant, but probably a grandson or even a great grandson. I don't know who his parents were, but I'm fairly sure who they weren't. He wasn't a son of Andrew (1810), since his family includes another Joshua (1833). I don't think he was a son of Alexander (1812) but he could be, but if so, why didn't he go with him to GA and to TN? He isn't a son of James (1814) as he had a son named Joshua (1844) who is accounted for, though the same age. That leaves one likely scenario. He could be an illegitimate child of Elizabeth or Abigail Grant or another daughter we haven't identified, who died before 1850.
He was residing with Thomas in 1850. I didn't find him in Buncombe in 1860, but I believe he is the Joshua Grant listed in McDowell Co, NC living with a Fortune family as a Laborer. I'm fairly sure that is him in 1860 McDowell. He was just 10 houses from James M. Grant, his Uncle. I don't know how, or if Joshua Grant is related to the family he is living with. He may have simply been a hired hand.
