I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin 6 times removed to James Grant and a 2nd cousin 5 times removed to Nancy Malinda Grant.
Special thanks to Patricia Thomas for data shared on this family.
James M. Grant was born ca 1813/1814 (per 1850 census), or ca 1810/11 (per 1860 census). He was probably born in Rutherford Co, NC or perhaps Buncombe Co, NC.
I haven't seen any direct proof, but I'm reasonably sure that James is a son of Thomas Grant and Amy Coxey. First of all, Thomas and Amy did have a son about his age who is otherwise unaccounted for. Secondly James M. Grant named his oldest daughter "Amy", perhaps after his mother, and several of the rest of their children's names parallel those of Andrew Grant's children, also son of Thomas. Thirdly, in the 1880 census, James M. Grant listed his birthplace as "NC", but listed his father and mother as having been born in VA, which fits for Thomas (but not Amy). Fourth, James and Malinda named a daughter "Abigail", possibly after James' sister Abigail. This name (like Amy) did not get used in other branches of the Grant family. This is all very circumstantial, but it is about all I have to go on. Add this to it and you have some more evidence. In 1853 James entered 50 acres of land on Clarks Branch of Crooked Creek adjoining Burgin and Little (should be "Lytle" instead). My map shows this general area to be about 4 miles from where Thomas Grant lived in Buncombe Co, NC.
James M. Grant married Mary Trantham sometime between ca 1840 and ca 1843 in Buncombe County. Patricia Tranthem Thomas shared data with me that seems to confirm this. I did not know about this first marriage, but it would explain the two children that seemed to pre-date James' marriage to Nancy Malinda Grant. I had assumed they were either hers by another man (out of wedlock) or that they were both of theirs, and just born before they married. However, with Patricia's shared data, we have concluded that he was married previously. She presented the will of Joseph Trantham (dated 1850), naming two grandchildren Amy Grant and Joshua Grant. These are the two children that pre-date James and Malinda's marriage. She also has some other research that shows that Joseph Trantham had a daughter Mary Trantham (1822-1844) who married "James Grant". She was not named in his will, as she was dead by then. This all fits perfectly to explain why only those two Grant children were named in Joseph Trantham's will. So, then, James M. Grant married Mary Trantham, daughter of Joseph Trantham and Mary Whitaker (who was a sister of of Sarah Whitaker, wife of Andrew Grant, James' brother). This makes Mary a niece of Sarah Whitaker Grant, James' sister-in-law. (Thanks to Patricia for helping to sort this out!).
Mary Trantham Grant died ca 1844 (per Patricia Thomas), probably in Rutherford County. It was before September, for that is the month that James remarried.
James Grant obtained a marriage bond on 19 Sep 1844 in Rutherford Co, NC to marry Malinda Grant (Nancy Malinda Grant). Thomas Grant was the bondsman. It isn't clear whether the bondsman was Thomas Grant (c1773, his father) or Thomas Grant (c1797) son of Clementine Grant. Malinda was listed as "Malinda" in all records except for the 1880 census which lists her as "Nancy M.", so her name is "Nancy Malinda Grant" which was a fairly common name back then. James and Malinda were obviously cousins, but I can't say to what degree.
Nancy Malinda Grant was born ca 1822/23 (per 1850 census) or ca 1820/21 (per 1860 census), probably in Rutherford County, North Carolina. I believe, but have no proof, that Malinda Grant was a child of Susan Grant, daughter of Clementine Grant mainly because her name showed up in the estate records of Clementine's son James Grant (1841 in Rutherford Co, NC), not as an heir, but she was paid $10.00, but not listed with the heirs of James, who were all listed as his siblings. This ties her into this family somehow, though how isn't real clear.
James and Malinda Grant were listed on the 1850 census in McDowell Co, NC. No other Grant's were nearby.

In 1860, James and Malinda were still in McDowell Co, NC, listed with Black Mountain as their Post office. Just 10 households away was a Joshua Grant, age 18, whom I believe was the same person living with Thomas Grant in the 1850 census who was probably his (Thomas) grandson. This is another tie between James and Thomas.

I don't have them in 1900 yet, though if they were still living, they were probably still in McDowell County.
Of all the children James and Mary and Malinda had, they were all still at home in 1880. The only missing child was Joshua who vanished after the 1860 census. He may have been killed during the Civil War or else moved away. Since I have so little additional data on these children, they will not get their own sections here. Refer to the register report below for what I do have on them.
