I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin 5 times removed of James Albert Grant.
James Albert Grant was born ca 1810/15 (per census analysis) in Rutherford Co, NC. His names was given differently in every record I've found, so it is somewhat confusing. His first two records give his name as James and James A. His marriage record gives A. B. Grant, and his children listed him on some records as Burton Grant. The only way to reconcile all of these is to assume his name is actually James Albert Grant. "Burton" and "Albert" are often interchangeable. I've seen other examples of someone named "Albert" or "Burton" listed as "A. B." on some records (as in "Albert Burton"). There is also the possibility that James A. Grant and Albert "Burton" Grant are not the same person, but I'm reasonably sure they are one and the same.
Burton's parents are unknown, but it seems very likely that he is a grandson of Andrew Grant and Martha Mackey. He was living with them in 1824 according to a Court record referring to him as an orphan. Unfortunately, no record of his parents names has been found. He was named in those records in conjunction with Susanna Tabitha Grant (c1818), whom I have assumed was his sister. I believe both of them were born out of wedlock to an unknown daughter of Andrew Grant. Susanna's descendants think her father was a Mr. Pell, but that doesn't necessarily mean that Burton has the same father. I could be totally wrong about them being born out of wedlock. Andrew Grant did have an unknown son born ca 1794/1800 who is unaccounted for. He may have married in the 1810-15 timeframe, and died ca 1818-1820, leaving these children as orphans.
Burton seemed to be home with his grandparents (Andrew and Martha) in Rutherford County for the 1820 census, (with his mother probably still alive at that time), aged "under 10", (born ca 1810/20).
Burton was named in a January 1824 Court Case in Rutherford County: "The court orders that Tabitha Grant & James Grant & Mary Biddy, infants and orphans living in sufferance at Andrew Grant's and at Edwin Biddy's to be brought into next court of probate in order to be bound out." (Rutherford Co, NC Court Minutes 1821-1825 page 239).
The above record does not prove that Tabitha and James are siblings, but it seems reasonable. Mary Biddy was just mentioned in the same record, but probably wasn't related, though the Biddy's were neighbors of Andrew Grant.
For some reason the above court order was ignored, for the children were not brought into the next court, and another order was issued in May 1824 Court: "The order of the court requiring the Sheriff to bring Susan T. Grant & James A. Grant into court that they might be bound out is continued to next June Court and the Sheriff to bring before the court at that time." (Rutherford Co, NC Court Minutes 1821-1825 page 260).
Note that the second court order gave their names in more detail, thus helping us positively identify these two children. Strangely, they seemed to ignore this Court order just like the first, for I found no record of them being brought into the next court, though the next court was in June 1824, and there was only one page of minutes, perhaps indicating some were lost.
Burton seems to be with his Uncle Thomas B. Grant (c1804) in 1830 in Burke County (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15), and his grandmother was probably in that household also.
Burton was probably with his grandmother Martha Mackey Grant in Macon County for the 1840 census (age 20-29, born ca 1810/20).
On 11 Oct 1841, A. B. Grant obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Sarah Smith (other records seem to indicate she was a Mathis). Peter Davis was bondsman. Sarah C. Smith (or Mathis) was born ca 1823/24 (per 1850 census) in Burke County, North Carolina (per 1850 and 1860 census). I don't know who her father was, but I think her mother was Maude Mathis, who was with Sarah in 1870.
I haven't been able to find whether Sarah was actually a "Smith" or a "Mathis". Since Maude Mathis was with her in 1870, I've assumed that was her mother. Also, one of Sarah's children listed her mother's maiden name as "Mathis". However, the marriage bond gives her name as "Smith", but that is similar enough to "Mathis" to be a simple mistake. Another possibility is that Sarah had married a Mr. Smith and was widowed before 1841.
Burton Grant may have died before 1850, or perhaps he didn't, but he was not home with Sarah and the children for the 1850 census. She had a child born in 1850 (Jesse) who was not listed on the census that year, so probably born after the census taker came around, and she apparently had another child in 1854, so it would seem that Burton was still alive, but just absent in 1850. Either that or he died around that time, and the last child (Elvira) was not his, or perhaps not even Sarah's.
Sarah was listed on the 1850 census in Tennessee Valley District of Macon County (which covered a large portion of the county). She was listed between Jacob Shope Sr and James Morgan. She was two houses from Lenoir McGaughey who was a neighbor of Martha Mackey Grant in 1840 and next to Charles B. Grant in 1860, thus showing all of them were in the same general area (Cowee Creek area). Joseph Miller and wife Susanna Tabitha Grant Miller, were just a few houses away from Sarah, and Susanna is a sister of Sarah's late husband Burton Grant. There were no Smiths anywhere nearby, but many Mathis (Matthews) within a few pages of Sarah. Several of them who were close in age to Sarah were also born in Burke County, so perhaps they are her brothers: Peter Matthews Jr (c1812 Burke), James Matthews (c1820 Burke). The older Matthews (also nearby) were born in Cabarrus and Mecklenburg County. One of these older sets might be Sarah's parents, but I don't want to guess.

Sarah was still in Macon Co, NC on the 1860 census in Cowee district. Most of the Mathis (Matthews) from 1850 were no longer in Macon, having apparently lived in the section cut of to form Jackson County in 1851. Some were still in Macon, including a William Mathis (c1831 TN) only a few houses from Sarah Grant in 1860. William had two of Peter Mathis (c1798) and Esther's children with him also, suggesting a connection there. Perhaps they are all related to Sarah. The youngest child, Elvira S. Grant was 4 years old, thus born ca 1855/56. She couldn't belong to Burton unless he was still alive (but not listed for some reason). She could be Sarah's daughter born out of wedlock, or perhaps a niece instead.

Sarah and family were still in Macon Co, NC for the 1870 census. They were listed in Cowee Township. Maude Mathis age 65 (born ca 1805 NC), was with them, and I've assumed this is her mother, though this census did not state relationships. I'm also not entirely sure her name says "Maude", but that is what it looks like. I wonder if this is the same person as "Maven" Mathis, wife of William Mathis (c1800) who was listed in Macon in 1850. That Maven was age 35 then, or born ca 1815, but it could be the same person. Just speculation though. Sarah and family also had the distinction of being listed twice on the same census. Their other listing was also in Cowee Township, but this time were listed with son George as head of household. Both listings are given below.

Sarah and family were still in Macon Co, NC and in Cowee Township for the 1880 census. Her married children were close by, including two who were next door. The census taker did not give them family or house numbers, so I made up one to distinguish each household. A Granddaughter (Martha L. Grant) was living with them. I don't know who her parents were.

Sarah Mathis Grant may have died between 1880 and 1900, for I was unable to locate her on the 1900 census, though most of her children were in Macon County that year.
James Albert "Burton" Grant and Sarah C. Mathis had five children as proven by the 1850 through 1880 census records. The youngest child (Elvira) may not be Burton's, especially if he died ca 1850, as I suspect.
Susan C. Grant was born April 1842 (per 1900 census) in Macon County, North Carolina. She was home with her mother for the 1850 census ("Susan" age 7, born Macon), and with her in 1860 ("Susan C." age 17, born Macon), and with her in 1870 ("Susan C." age 28, born NC), and with her in 1880 ("Susan C." age 37).
Susan Grant was listed as head of household on the 1900 census in Macon County in Cowee Township. Her brother John was two households away. She was listed as single.

I did not find Susan after 1900.
John R. Grant was born April 1844 (per 1900 census) in Macon County, North Carolina. He was home with his mother for the 1850 census ("John R" age 5, born Macon), and with her in 1860 ("John R." age 15, born Macon), and with her in 1870 ("John." age 25, born NC).
On 20 Nov 1871, John Grant married Margaret Clure (Margaret L. Cloer) in Macon County. Margaret was born ca 1849/50 in Macon County, daughter of Humphrey P. Cloer and Elizabeth McGaughey.
Margaret L. Cloer Grant died sometime between their marriage in 1871, and 1876, for in that latter year, John remarried.
On 10 Dec 1876, J. R. Grant, age 31, married Nancy M. Martin age 19 (Nancy Matilda Martin) in Macon County. They were married by P. P. McLean. Nancy Matilda Martin was born August 1858 (per 1900 census), in NC, daughter of Joseph Martin.
They were listed on the 1880 census in Cowee Township next door to mother Sarah and also next to brother George.

Nancy Matilda Martin Grant died on 12 Feb 1924 (per death certificate) in Macon County. Her death record gave her father's name as "Joe Martin", but left her mother blank. I don't know where she is buried.
George W. Grant was born April 1847. I base this on several census entries. His 1900 census record gives "Apr 1850", which is wrong, for the earlier census records show him older than that. He was 3 in 1850 (born ca 1846/47), and 13 in 1860, which agrees. In 1870 he was 23, which agrees with the previous ones. In 1880 he was 31, which is off, but combining them all, I chose April 1847.
George was home with his mother for the 1850 census ("George W." age 3, born Macon), and with her in 1860 ("George W." age 13), and in 1870 he was listed twice, once with his mother ("George" age 20), and again as head of household, with his mother and siblings with him.

On 1 Oct 1878, G. W. Grant age 28, married Harriett L. McGaha, age 30 in Macon County. They were married by Thomas Mashburn. Harriett Louise West was born Jan 1844 (per 1900 and 1850 census) in Macon County, daughter of John West and Elizabeth Gross. She married first to James McGaha on 19 Sep 1867. He died sometime before 1878 when she married George W. Grant.
They were listed on the 1880 census in Cowee, next door to brother John R. Grant. Harriett's son William McGaha was with them, and also S. R. Pickens (Seborn Pickens), who was listed as "Cousin", though I don't know who he is, nor how related. There were no Pickens in 1850, 1860 or 1870 Macon County, nor nearby. The closest ones in those years were in Buncombe and Henderson County. It is possible that he is related to Harriett, and not George.

Jesse C. Grant was born 5 Mar 1850. This is based on his tombstone which gives 5 Mar 1847, though that year disagrees with his other census records. In 1900 he was born "Mar 1850", and in 1860 he was 10 years old (born ca 1849/50), so I've "corrected" his birth year to "1850". In other words, his tombstone is wrong. He was born in Macon County.
Although he was born in March, 1850, he was not listed with his mother on the 1850 census, which was taken in June. This may he was not actually born in March, or that he was not actually born in 1850 (perhaps 1851 instead), or that the census taker just missed him for some reason. Jesse was home with his mother in 1860 ("Jesse C." age 10, born Macon).
On 28 Jun 1870 Jesse Grant married Sarah Queen in Macon County. They were married by J. K. Bryson. Sarah E. Queen was born March 1853 (based on comparison of 1860 through 1900 census records), in Macon County, daughter of John William Queen and Martha Hickey. She was a sister to Myra Elvira Queen who married Jesse's cousin George Carson Grant (1838).
Jesse and Sarah were listed on the 1870 census in Macon County, Cowee Township.

Elvira S. Grant was born ca 1855/56 (per 1860 census) in Macon Co, NC (per 1860 census).
Note: I had originally confused this Elvira Grant with another one, named Elvira E. Grant (1854) who married William Humphrey and Thomas Brown and later lived in Jackson Co, NC. It turns out that this Elvira (of Macon) was not the same person as that Elvira who is in fact a daughter of Alexander Grant and Susan Summers (or Sumner) (thanks to Bob Nance for clearing up my confusion on that matter).
She was home with her mother for the 1860 census ("Elvira S." age 4, born Macon), but not home in 1870.
I don't know whether Elvira died in the 1860's, or married someone.
