I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grandnephew of Elizabeth Grant.
Elizabeth "Betsy" Grant was born ca 1798/99 (per 1860 census) in Rutherford Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census).
I'm reasonably sure she is a child of Andrew Grant and Martha Mackey, though I don't have absolute proof. They did have an unknown daughter her age with them in 1800, 1810 and 1820, and someone her age was with brother Thomas Grant in 1830, and someone Elizabeth's age, and the age of her children were with widow Martha Mackey Grant in 1840. All this is circumstantial, but I feel quite sure Elizabeth is Andrew and Martha's child.
Elizabeth Grant never married but had two children out of wedlock. I don't know who the father of either child was. I found no Court records, nor bastardy bonds to give any clues.
Elizabeth Grant seems to be home with her parents for the 1800 census in Rutherford (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800).
Elizabeth seems to still be home with her parents for the 1810 census (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800).

Her father died ca 1825, and around that time, her mother and unmarried siblings moved to the Three Mile Creek area of Burke County (this area became Yancey County in 1833). Elizabeth made this same trip, for her first child was born there in 1826.
The 1830 census showed Thomas Grant in Burke County, and based on his neighbors, he was definitely in the Three Mile Creek area. He was unmarried, but had a large household, consisting of himself and probably his mother and sister Elizabeth, and several nieces and nephews. Thomas' household seems to contain Elizabeth and her son William.

By 1833, the Grants, including Elizabeth, moved to Macon County, North Carolina settling somewhere in the Cowee Creek vicinity.
Elizabeth Grant had another child out of wedlock in 1837. No idea who the father was.
Elizabeth seems to be home with her mother for the 1840 census in Macon County. Her son William and daughter Susan would seem to be there also.

On the 1850 census, Elizabeth Grant was listed in Macon Co, NC as a head of household, with her two children residing with her. Fortunately for us, the Macon County census enumerator took the extra time to find out the County of birth for everyone, and not just the State like so many others did. Their neighbors on either side were both landowners: A. B. Donaldson and Abraham Moore. Alexander B. Donaldson lived on Skeenah Creek, and I'm not sure where Abraham Moore lived.

Betsy Grant entered 100 acres of land on 12 Nov 1853 in Macon Co, NC and it was granted to her on 17 Dec 1858. The deed did not say so, but a later record shows this land was on Wesser Creek (present day Swain County). (Macon Co, NC Deed Book I page 471).
On the 1860 census, Elizabeth was residing in Macon Co, NC with her married daughter Susan Grant. They were listed in Cowee District. Elizabeth's nephew Wilkie I. Grant was just a few houses away, and so was another nephew Joseph Grant (son of Thomas B. Grant)

Elizabeth Grant died sometime between 1860 and 1865, for on 20 Feb 1865, her son-in-law John Cansler, and her son William C. Grant sold 73 acres of the Wesser Creek land (that she was granted in 1858) to Alfred Totherow. There is no record of them receiving this land in a deed, so they must have received it upon her death as their inheritance. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book L page 307).
Elizabeth Grant had two children, both apparently born out of wedlock. They are proven by the 1850 census and by the 20 Feb 1865 Deed where her son and son-in-law are selling her land.
William C. Grant was born November 1826 (per 1900 census) in Burke (later Yancey, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. He was home with his mother for the 1850 census.

Susan D. Grant was born ca 1836/37 (per 1850 census) in Macon Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census). She was probably born in the Cowee Creek area. I don't know who her father might have been. Her middle name might be "Delilah", but this is based on her 1870 census entry listing her as "Elilah", but it should be noted that the 1870 Macon County census for Welch's Township was horribly inaccurate for some reason.
Susan was apparently with her mother and grandmother (Martha) for the 1840 census, age "under 5" (born ca 1835/40).
She was with her mother for the 1850 census ("Susan D." age 13, born Macon).
On 26 Jun 1856 John Cansler obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Susan D. Grant. No bondsman was listed. John Cansler was born ca 1821/22 in Rutherford County. I don't know who his parents are.
They were listed on the 1860 census in Macon Co, NC in Cowee District with mother Elizabeth Grant residing with them.

On 20 Feb 1865, John Cansler and his brother-in-law William C. Grant sold 73 acres on Wesser's Creek to Alfred Totherow. This was land Elizabeth Grant had been granted in 1858. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book L page 307).
They were also listed in Macon in 1870, in Welch's Township. In 1870 she was listed as "Elila", which might be "Delilah", so it occurred to me that was her middle name. However, the 1870 census for that township is so full of errors, that I don't trust any of it. The children's names were wrong also. I suspect the census taker just did a poor job, or else it is only the federal copy that was bad (the originals are all lost). They were two houses from Mary Ann Totherow Grant, widow of Wilkie I. Grant (1820) (Susan's 1st cousin) and just 11 houses from Susan's brother William C. Grant.

In 1880 they were still in Macon, but listed in Burningtown Township.

In the 19 August 1896 edition of the Franklin Press, John Cansler was mentioned: "We regret to learn that Uncle John Cansler was stricken with paralysis at his home on Burningtown Saturday morning. We hope he will soon recover". (Published in "Macon County Echoes" Volume 8 # 3 Fall 1996 pg 15)
Apparently John Cansler died sometime after 19 Aug 1896, but before 1900, for I did not find him nor Susan on the 1900 census in Macon County, though I found several of their children still around. So Susan D. Grant Cansler died sometime between 1880 and 1900 in Macon County, and John Cansler between August 1896 and 1900. I don't know where either are buried, though probably somewhere in Burningtown Township.
