I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin, 5 times removed to William C. Grant.
William C. Grant was born November 1826 (per 1900 census) in the Three Mile Creek area of what was then Burke Co, NC. This area became Yancey County in 1833, about the same time his family moved to Macon Co, NC.
William C. Grant was a son of Elizabeth "Betsy" Grant, and apparently born out of wedlock. We don't know who his father was.
William C. Grant was residing with his mother (Elizabeth) and his grandmother Martha and other relatives in the Burke Co, NC area until ca 1833 when that region became Yancey County. They moved about that same time to Macon County, NC. They lived somewhere in the Cowee area of Macon County.
On the 1850 census, William C. Grant was at home in Macon Co, NC with his mother Elizabeth and younger sister Susan D. Grant. This census listed his birthplace as Yancey Co, NC, and his mother's birth place as Rutherford Co, NC, and Susan's as Macon Co, NC. (Note: The 1860 census lists William's birth place as Rutherford Co, NC instead of Yancey).

William C. Grant obtained a marriage bond on 8 Dec 1857 in Macon Co, NC to marry Eliza C. Totherow. Her brother John S. Totherow was the bondsman. William and Eliza were married on 13 Dec 1857 in Macon Co, NC by M. J. Morgan, a Justice of the Peace.
Either before, or just after their marriage, William and Eliza moved to the area near the headwaters of Wesser Creek in the area now called Flats and Briertown in Macon Co, NC. This area was part of Welch's Township until Swain County was formed (1871) and then since Swain took most of Welch's, this area became part of Nantahala Township of Macon Co, NC.
William C. Grant and Eliza were listed on the 1860 census in Macon Co, NC in Welch's District. This census shows William with $200 real estate, but I've found no deed or grant where he obtained this land. I can only assume it is the land (or half the land) his mother was granted in 1858, as he and his brother-in-law John Cansler sold that land in 1865, and in 1860 John Cansler also had $200 real estate, so it seems they each had half the land (or both claimed all the land).

The 1860 census lists William's birth place as Rutherford Co, NC, whereas the 1850 census lists Yancey Co, NC. I think 1850 is more reliable, since his mother probably reported that information to the census taker, and she would certainly know where he was born, more so than he himself.
I didn't find any records for William C. Grant pertaining to service during the Civil War. On 1 Mar 1863, a William M. Grant age 36 (born ca 1826/1827), resident of Macon Co, NC, enlisted in Company B, 39th Regiment, NC Troops (Confederate). The records show this person was in the hospital on 10 Jul 1863 and had deserted by 19 Jul 1863. I have not been able to find out who this William M. Grant was. I think it probably is William C. Grant, but the middle initial is wrong, but William always used his middle initial of "C" on every record I've found for him. So I'm not even close to sure that this Civil War record pertains to William C. Grant.
On 20 Feb 1865 William C. Grant and his brother-in-law John Cansler (married to Susan D. Grant) sold 73 acres of land on Wesser Creek to Alfred Totherow (brother of William's wife Eliza C. Totherow Grant). I've found no record of where William C. Grant and John Cansler obtained this land, and it appears to be part of the same land that Elizabeth "Betsy" Grant was granted in 1858, though that was for 100 acres, so they must have kept 27 acres of it. This indicates that she had died between 1860 and 1865, and these were her heirs selling part of her estate. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book L page 307).
William C. Grant and Eliza were listed on the 1870 census in Macon Co, NC, still in Welch's Township. For some reason, this census was very poorly done, and there were many mistakes. Of all the people in this particular township, most of the ones I've checked had errors, mainly in regards to the names, so the following is highly suspect, and is in disagreement with previous and later records.

On 4 Nov 1875 William C. Grant bound himself to William M. Grant for $150, waranteed by land on the Nantahala River. This was a mortgage deed, and if William C. failed to pay it back, William M. would get the land. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 11 page 289).
When Swain County was formed in 1871 from parts of Macon and Jackson County, the area formerly known as Welch's Township was mostly taken by Swain County, so the part that remained in Macon became attached to Nantahala Township, and this included where William C. Grant lived.
William C. Grant was listed on the 1880 census in Macon Co, NC in Nantahala Township.

Compare the 1880 census to the 1870 and you'll see that most of the children can't be easily reconciled, but if we ignore the 1870 census it works out pretty well.
On 24 Mar 1885 in Macon Co, NC, William C. Grant witnessed the marriage of his daughter Elizabeth D. Grant to her cousin Thomas Perry Grant (son of Joseph Grant).
On 1 Nov 1889 William C. Grant and his wife Eliza C. Grant, of Macon Co, NC sold 150 acres of land to Thomas Lackey of Swain Co, NC. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 11 page 475).
The 1890 census was lost for most of the United States, including Macon Co, NC.
On 10 Aug 1890 in Macon Co, NC, William C. Grant witnessed the marriage of his son J. J. Grant (Joshua Jackson Grant) to Lizzie Gaffe.
William C. Grant was listed on the 1900 census in Macon Co, NC in Nantahala Township. He was listed as "Married" but his wife Eliza was not with him, so that was a mistake, the number of years married was left blank.

I didn't find William C. Grant listed on the 1910 census in Macon (or Swain) Co, so he was probably dead by then.
While visiting the Aquone Cemetery in Macon Co, NC a few years ago, I found a grave marked simply "W. C. Grant" with no dates. I'm fairly sure this is him. Aquone is just a short distance from the Flats and Briertown area. Next to W. C. Grant's marker was "J. M. Grant Mar 20 1877 - Jun 18 1894", who was probably his son James M. Grant, the birth date matches that of James M. Grant. There is no marker for Eliza C. Totherow Grant, but there are many unmarked graves near them. They all have marble blocks, but no writing on them.
William C. Grant and Eliza C. Totherow's children are mostly proven by the 1860-1900 census records. The 1870 census was a terrible mess, but despite that, I'm sure this family is complete. There could have been other children who were born between census years and died young.
Elizabeth D. Grant (1859-1918)
Joshua Jackson Grant (1869-1917)
William Monroe Grant (1874-1964)
Elizabeth D. Grant was born 6 Oct 1859 in the Briertown area of Macon Co, NC. She was home with her parents in 1860 ("Elizabeth" age 2, born Macon) and with them in 1870 ("Eliza" age 11), and home in 1880 ("Elizabeth D." age 21).
She married her 2nd cousin Thomas Perry Grant on 24 Mar 1885 in Macon Co, NC. Thomas was a son of Joseph Grant and Sarah Forrester. They were listed on the 1900 census in Macon Co, NC in Nantahala Township.

Elizabeth died of Influenza on 28 Oct 1918 in Swain Co, NC. Her death certificate reports her death in Nantahala Township, and gives her birth date of 6 Oct 1912, which is clearly a typo. Her father was listed as "Walnon Grant" born Yancey Co, NC, and her mother was "Elvara Totherow" born Haywood Co, NC. The informant was G. W. Hurst and her burial was listed at Briertown Cemetery (Macon Co, NC). Though this death certificate had errors on it (mainly in spelling of her parents names, and her birth year) it confirms that her father was born in Yancey Co, NC. (Swain Co, NC Death Records Book 3 page 187).
After Elizabeth's death, Thomas married her sister Sarah Louisa Grant (see her entry below).
Mary L. Grant was born Feb 1862 in the Briertown area of Macon Co, NC. She never married. She was home with her parents through the years until their deaths. In 1870 she was with them ("Mary L." age 7), and with them in 1880 ("Mary L." age 17), and with them in 1900 ("Mary L." age 38, born Feb 1862).
In 1910 she was with her sister Elizabeth D. Grant and her husband Thomas P. Grant (see above) ("Mary" age 47).
Mary and her sister Louisa were living together in 1920 in Swain County just a few houses from brother-in-law Thomas P. Grant.

She died 28 Sep 1924 in Macon Co, NC. Her death certificate lists her parents as "William Grant" and "Lizzie Tutherow". I don't know where she is buried, but I suspect she is at Briertown Cemetery, or perhaps at Aquone near her father, in one of the many unmarked graves there.
John S. Grant was born 22 Jun 1864 in the Briertown area of Macon Co, NC. He was home with his parents in 1870 ("William" age 5, which is an error), and in 1880 ("John S." age 15).
He married Emily V. Smith on 22 Apr 1888 in Macon Co, NC. John and family must have had financial problems, for on 4 Sep 1893 he was released from having to pay Poll taxes for 1891, 1892 and 1893 "for poverty and infirmity". On 7 May 1894 he was listed again. They were listed on the 1900 census in Macon Co, NC in Burningtown Township.

Andrew Sherman Grant was born ca 1866/67 in the Briertown area of Macon Co, NC. He was with his parents in 1870 (probably listed as "Jane" age 3), and with them in 1880 ("Andrew S." age 13).
Andrew married Susan Melvina Love on 22 Dec 1889 in Macon Co, NC. That is the last record I have for them. They weren't in Macon Co, NC in 1900, so I suspect they moved away, or perhaps died before 1900.
Joshua Jackson Grant was born Jan 1869 in the Briertown area of Macon Co, NC. He was with his parents in 1870 (probably listed as "Amanda" age 1), and with them in 1880 ("Joshua J." age 10).
