I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin, 4 times removed to William M. Grant.

William Marion Grant was born ca 1850/51 (per 1860 census) in Macon Co, NC (per 1860 census). His middle name of "Marion" was given on the birth certificate of one of his sons (Jesse R. Grant). It seems likely that he was named in part for his uncle William Totherow.

William M. Grant is a son of Wilkie I. Grant and Mary Ann Totherow as proven by the 1860 and 1870 census and various other records.

William was home with his parents for the 1860 census ("William M." age 9, born Macon).

He was home in 1870, though the census taker did a horrible job in Welch's township of Macon County (where the family was listed), messing up most of the households. It seems that "William" age 20 was the only one listed somewhat accurately in his parents household.

In 1871, Swain County was formed, including the area where the Grant family resided.

On 6 Jan 1873, William M. Grant married Mary L. Low in Macon County. They were married by A. L. Wild, Justice of the Peace. The marriage record gave William's age as 21, and Mary's also as 21. Mary Lucinda Low was born ca 1851/52, daughter of Nathan Low and Elizabeth A. Mason.

On 4 Nov 1875, William C. Grant (1826) (William's Uncle by marriage, and cousin by blood) made a deed (apparently a mortgage or something other than a land transfer) to William M. Grant for $150, warranteed by some land on the Nantahala River. I'm not sure what this means exactly. It may be that the elder William was burrowing money from the younger, and using some Nantahala River land as collateral. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 11 page 289).

On 8 Mar 1876, William Grant received a State Land Grant for 150 acres on Silver Mine Creek, which was entered on 18 Dec 1866 (William was only 15 at that time). This may indicate that this land was a different William, but not necessarily. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 463).

William and family were listed on the 1880 census in Swain County, in Nantahala Township, next door to brother John P. Grant and just two houses from his widowed mother.

On 26 Sep 1881, William Dehart and wife Sarah Dehart, sold land to the District 6 (Wesser's Creek) School Committee, namely W. M. Grant, J. W. Truitt and W. R. Dills. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 4 page 100).

On 14 Mar 1884 George H. Guyer and wife Sophrona sold 100 acres (on Nantahala River) to W. M. Grant. Witnesses were J. F. Ray, and R. A. Willis. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 5 page 259).

In an undated deed (probably between 1885 and 1889), W. M. Grant and his brother J. P. Grant, received a join State Land Grant for 129 acres. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 12 page 65).

On 19 Sep 1885, J. P. Grant (William's brother John) and W. M. Grant sold timber rights to W. Morris and W. A. Hoskins of Monroe Co, TN, for timber rights on a 126 acre Silver Mine Creek tract. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 6 page 293).

On 21 Dec 1885, W. M. Grant sold 75 acres (on Silver Mine Creek) to his brother John P. Grant. This might be half of their joint land grant. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 11 page 511).

On 23 Apr 1886, W. M. Grant sold more Timber rights to W. Morris and W. A. Hoskins of Monroe Co, TN. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 29).

On the same date (23 Apr 1886), John P. Grant and W. M. Grant sold more timber rights to the same men. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 63).

On 8 May 1886, W. M. Grant sold timber rights to A. D. Potts and R. F. Willis. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 8 page 395).

On 4 Jun 1887, W. M. Grant and R. F. Wells (is this R. F. Willis?) received a 216 acre Land Grant on Silver Mine Creek "on County Line" (Macon County line). (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 229).

Mary Lucinda Low Grant died sometime between 11 Aug 1881 (birth date of last known child) and 23 Jul 1888 (date of William's 2nd marriage). Presumably she died in Swain County. I don't know where she is buried. She may be at Wesser Creek cemetery in an unmarked grave.

On 23 Jul 1888 William Grant married S. E. Walker in neighboring Blount County, Tennessee. They were married by J. N. Cameron, Justice of the Peace. I don't have a birth date for Sarah E. Walker yet, nor parents names. Ginger Hackney told me her maiden name was "Lane". If that is true, then she must have been married to a Mr. Walker prior to marrying William M. Grant.

Although they married in Blount County, Tennessee they returned to Swain County, North Carolina to live.

On 7 May 1889, W. M. Grant and wife S. E. Grant sold timber rights to L. A. Jarrett. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 23 page 175).

On 5 Nov 1889, W. M. Grant and wife Sary E. Grant sold 2 tracts to W. J. West of Macon County. The first was 100 acres, and the second 216 acres. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 11 page 309).

An undated deed (1890-92) shows W. M. Grant and wife S. E. Grant selling 80 acres to S. L. McMan, land on Silver Mine Creek. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 16 page 460).

William M. Grant died sometime before 13 Jun 1892 in Swain County, for on that date, his brother A. M. Grant, and J. N. Truitt signed an administration bond for the administering of the estate of W. M. Grant, deceased. (Swain Co, NC Administration Bonds 1873-1908 page 49).

I don't know where William is buried, but I'd suspect Wesser Creek Cemetery. It is possible though, that he is buried elsewhere.

I don't know what happened to Sarah, his wife. She was not mentioned in any further Swain County records. She may have died also, or perhaps returned to Blount County (if her parents or close relatives were still there).

Children

William M. Grant and wife Mary Lucinda Low had four children, three proven by the 1880 census, and the fourth by his Birth Certificate. Some deeds made after their father's death also proves the children. It does not appear that William and his second wife Sarah had any children together.

Wilkie N. Grant (1874)

William Charles Grant (1875)

Jesse Robert Grant (1877)

James Marion Grant (1881)

Wilkie N. Grant was born ca 1874 in Swain County. I have conflicting birth dates for him. The 1880 census gives his age as 6 (born ca 1873/74), and the 1900 census gives his birth as Oct 1873 (this is also on his tombstone, but I think it was put up later). His death certificate shows he died on 25 Jun 1921, at age 47 years, 1 month, and 5 days. This calculates to a birth date of 20 May 1874.  This is the date I'm using, pending other evidence.

Wilkie was obviously named after his grandfather Wilkie I. Grant. I'm not sure what his "N" middle initial stood for.

Wilkie was home with his parents for the 1880 census ("Wilky N." age 6).

On 26 Mar 1896, Wilkie witnessed the marriage of William Grant and Georgia Dills in Swain County.

On 10 May 1896, Wilkie N. Grant age 22, married Mary Mason in Swain County. They were married by F. M. Morgan, Justice of the Peace. Mary Ellen Mason was born March 1876 (per 1900 census) in Swain County. I don't know who her parents are.

On 19 Dec 1896, W. N. Grant and wife Mollie Grant, W. C. Grant and wife Amanda Grant sold 80 acres to S.L. McMahan, land formerly belonging to their father William M. Grant, deceased. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 19 page 480).

On 3 Nov 1897, W. J. West and wife L. E. West sold 50 acres to Wilkey N. Grant and wife (name not given). The land was on Silver Mine Creek. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 19 page 447).

On 3 Nov 1897, W. J. West deeded 216 acres in Nantahala Township to Wilkey Grant, Charles Grant, Robert Grant and James Grant. (all the heirs of William). (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 21 page 247).

On 28 Jan 1899, James Hayes and wife Betty Ann Hayes, and W. N. Grant and wife M. E. Grant, sold 100 acres to Dallas Dehart. The land was on Silver Creek (probably Silver Mine Creek). I'm not sure why Wilkie owned land jointly with the Hayes family. Perhaps they were related to his wife. (James and Betty Ann's Hayes had a child who married one of Wilkie's 1st cousins). (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 19 page 534).

They were listed on the 1900 census in Swain County. Based on their neighbors, I suspect they were on Silver Mine Creek.

On 13 Nov 1903, T. H. Lackey and wife Mary Lackey (Wilkie's Aunt), sold W. N. Grant 150 acres on Silver Creek (Silver Mine Creek). (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 363).

They were listed on the 1910 census in Swain County, apparently in the Silver Mine Creek area. They were just a couple of houses from 1st cousin William P. Grant.

Wilkie N. Grant died on 25 Jun 1921 of Pneumonia (per Death certificate). His Death Certificate gave his name as "Wilkie Grant", and that he died in Nantahala Township, aged 47 years, 1 month and 5 days. His father was "William Grant", and mother was "Mary Holdun" (incorrect). He was buried on 26 Jun 1921 at Wesser Creek. I've seen his marker, and it says "Wilkey Grant b Oct 1873". There is no death date. I got the impression (but I could be wrong) that both his and his wife's marker were placed years after their deaths.

Mary Ellen Mason Grant died on 25 Dec 1930 and is buried at Wesser Creek. Her stone says "Mary Ellen Mason Grant Mar 1876 - Dec 25 1930".

William Charles Grant was born Sep 1875 (per 1900 census) in Swain County.

Charles was home with his parents for the 1880 census ("William C." age 3).

On 21 Dec 1895, W. C. Grant age 20 married Amanda McMahan age 19, in Macon County. They were married by W. C. Mason. Amanda C. McMahan was born June 1876 (per 1900 census) probably in Macon County. I don't know who her parents were.

On 10 May 1896 Charles witnessed the marriage of his brother Wilkey N. Grant and Mary Mason in Macon County.

On 19 Dec 1896, W. N. Grant and wife Mollie Grant, W. C. Grant and wife Amanda Grant sold 80 acres to S.L. McMahan, land formerly belonging to their father William M. Grant, deceased. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 19 page 480).

On 3 Nov 1897, W. J. West deeded 216 acres in Nantahala Township to Wilkey Grant, Charles Grant, Robert Grant and James Grant. (all the heirs of William). (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 21 page 247).

On 28 May 1899, W. C. Grant witnessed the marriage of T. Ervin Grant (his 1st cousin) and Nancy Mason in Swain County.

On 20 Jan 1900, T. A. Downs and wife A. R. Downs sold land to W. C. Grant adjoining Mary Ann Grant (his grandmother). (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 21 page 250).

They were listed on the 1900 census in Swain County. Charles' brother James was living with them. They were next door to their Uncle Alfred M. Grant (1858).
