I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin, 5 times removed to Wilkie I. Grant.

Wilkie I. Grant was born ca 1820 (per various records) in Rutherford Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census).

"Wilkey" is a surname found in Rutherford County, North Carolina, and it is certainly possible that he was named for some member of that family. However, I know of no relationship between the Grants and Wilkeys in Rutherford, or at least none in that timeframe.  His name is spelled several different ways, so I don't know which is "correct": Wilkie, Wilky, Wilkie, Wilkey. For the sake of consistency, I am sticking with "Wilkie", though that might not be the preferred spelling.

I do not have a clue what Wilkie's middle initial of "I" might stand for. Some possibilities include Ignatius, Iverson, Irons, etc. It could be anything (though I can't think of too many "I" names).

Wilkie's birth date of "1820" is based on several combined sources. First off, his 1850 census entry gave his age as "28", which gives him an approximate birth year of 1821/22. His 1860 census entry gives his age as "39" or born ca 1820/21. He died in 1870 (before the census). His presumed 1830 census entry gives his age as 10-14, or born ca 1815/20, and his presumed 1840 entry gives his age as 15-19, or born ca 1820/25. The only way to reconcile all of these is to put his birth at ca 1820. This excludes his 1850 entry which doesn't agree, but census errors are extremely common, so this is not an exact science. The final bit of evidence is his hand carved tombstone (Wesser Creek Cemetery, Swain County, North Carolina). It gives his date of death as May 5, 1870, and "age 51 years". This puts his birth at ca 1818/19, which doesn't work with the census records. All in all, I'd say "1820" is close enough.

I've never found any proof as to who Wilkie's parents were. I had concluded long ago that he was part of the Andrew Grant and Martha Mackey family, and probably a grandson of theirs. I base this on the fact that they were the progenitors of most of the Macon County Grants, and that Wilkie was born in Rutherford where they had come from. Also, Wilkie (or someone his age) did seem to be with widow Martha in 1830 and 1840 census. The logical conclusion is that Wilkie was orphaned early on, and that his father or his mother was a child of Andrew and Martha. I say "mother" also, as illegitimacy was very common in Andrew's family.

A few years ago, I got in touch with Jack Barnett, a great great grandson of Wilkie, and he told me that family tradition in his family said that Wilkie was indeed born out of wedlock, and that his mother was named "Lou Grant", and that his father was a Mr. Keeter, first name unknown, but that he later lived in Tennessee. This made sense, as the Keeters were neighbors of the Grants in Rutherford County. It didn't take much to conclude that Lou Grant was probably a daughter of Andrew and Martha (Mackey) Grant.

To date, I have not found a single piece of evidence pertaining to Lou Grant, but I'm sure she existed, and was probably one of the unknown daughters of Andrew Grant (he had one born ca 1804/10 who is unidentified). See Lou Grant's section on Andrew Grant's page for more on her, and possible clues to the identity of Mr. Keeter. It seems that she died shortly after Wilkie's birth.

Wilkie I. Grant was probably not born yet when the 1820 census was taken.

He would have been about 9 or 10 years old by the time of the 1830 census. His grandfather Andrew Grant had died ca 1825, and his grandmother Martha had moved from Rutherford to the Three Mile Creek area of Burke County (later Yancey). She was apparently there with her son Thomas Grant for the 1830 census. A careful examination of Thomas' household shows that Wilkie was probably there also, aged 10-14 (born ca 1815/20).

Wilkie's grandmother, and the majority of her children, married and single, all moved to Macon County, North Carolina by 1833, settling in the Cowee Creek region. Wilkie made this trip also.

For the 1840 census, Wilkie would have been about 19 or 20 years old. His grandmother Martha (Mackey) Grant was listed as head of household in Macon County, and she had an apparent male child with her aged 15-19 (born ca 1820/25). I strongly suspect this was Wilkie.

On 21 Mar 1848, Wilkey Grant obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Mary Ann Totherow. Joel Sawyers was the bondsman. I don't believe Joel was related to the Grants (but could be). Mary Ann Totherow was born ca October 1829 (based on several combined census records) in Buncombe County, daughter of Joshua Totherow and Rhoda Shope.

Wilkie and family were listed on the 1850 census in Macon County in Tennessee Valley district (which covered the vast majority of the county at that time). He was listed next to the William Elmore family on one side, and the Patton Dehart family on the other. It should be noted that John Patton Dehart was married to Lavina Miller, who was a sister to Mary Miller, wife of Thomas B. Grant, Wilkie's Uncle, thus showing they were all in the same general area.  I haven't been able to pinpoint where Wilkie was living at this time, for his nearby neighbors (who were landowners) owned land all over the place. They may have already been in the Wesser Creek area (present day Swain County) but probably not.

On  22 Apr 1856, William Dehart Sr and wife Sarah sold 50 acres to Wilkey Grant, the land being on the Nantahala River (probably on or near Wesser Creek in present Swain County). For some reason this deed was recorded twice (the second time on 1 Sep 1869). (Macon Co, NC Deed Book L page 377 and Deed Book L page 357).

They were still in Macon County for the 1860 census, in Cowee Township. Several Grant relatives were nearby, including Wilkie's aunt Elizabeth Grant who was six houses away. Cousin Joseph Grant was 3 houses away. Mary Ann's parents (Joshua and Rhoda Totherow) were just two houses away.

Wilkie and family apparently moved to the Nantahala River area near Wesser Creek sometime in the 1860's.

Wilkie I. Grant died on 5 May 1870 in Macon (now Swain) County, North Carolina. He is buried at Wesser Creek Cemetery. I visited this cemetery a few years ago, and did not see his grave. I visited again a year or two later and found it that time. I did not know he was buried there until that time. I found a small hand carved (and badly damaged) stone with this inscription "W. I. Grant, age 51 years May 5 1870". I suspect this stone will not last too many more years due to erosion.

Mary Ann Totherow Grant was listed as head of household on the 1870 census in Macon County, in Welch's Township (which covered the Wesser Creek region). For some reason, the Welch's township portion of the 1870 census was particularly bad. I have never seen so many mistakes in one census. I can only think of two explanations. The first possibility is that the census taker just did a terrible job, and did not visit each household, but got as much info from neighbors as possible, in order to avoid having to go up into every "Holler". The other explanation is that the original record was much better, but that the census taker did a poor job making the federal copy of his census. The original returns were kept at the local level (and most have been lost over the years), but the census taker made a copy (by hand) to be filed with the federal government. It is the federal copy we use when we look at the census records today. Having said all of that, that helps explain why Mary Ann's 1870 census entry is so messed up. The names and ages of the children (and the sexes in some cases) are mostly wrong. William C. Grant (Wilkie's 1st cousin) was about 10 houses away (and his listing was messed up also).

In 1871, Swain County was formed, including the area where the Wilkie Grant family resided.

Mary Ann and children were listed on the 1880 census in Swain County, in Nantahala Township, near several of her married children.

On 16 Jun 1885, Mary Ann Grant sold timber rights to W. Morris and W. A. Hoskins of Monroe County, Tennessee, for timber on her 100 acres of Wesser Creek land. (I don't know where this land came from). Witnesses were J. H. Roane, and R. H. Byrd. Mary Ann Grant signed with a mark. One year later on 23 Apr 1886, she made the same deed again. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 6 page 302, Deed Book 9 page 28).

Mary Ann was listed on the 1900 census in Swain.

On 19 Apr 1902, Mary Ann and several of her children sold 33 1/3 acres (being 2/3rds of Wilkie's 50 acres purchased in 1856) to J. M. R. Dehart. This left 1/3rd of the land in Mary Ann's hands (or someone's). The deed was signed by S. H. Grant (Sarah H. Grant), M. A. Grant (Mary Ann Totherow Grant), Jane Grant (Eliza Jane Grant), A. M. Grant (Alfred M. Grant), L. J. Grant (Lucinda J, wife of Alfred), Mindee Grant (Arminda), J. P. Grant (John Patton Grant), G. A. Grant (Georgia, wife of John), all of Swain County. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 368).

On 18  Dec 1903, M. A. Grant sold 1/2 acres to the Swain County Board of Education. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 457).

The deed above is the last record I've found for Mary Ann. I was unable to locate her on the 1910 census, so it seems likely she died between late 1903 and 1910.

Children

Wilkie and Mary Ann had nine children as proven by the various census records. Most of the heirs were named in a 1902 deed also. Mary's 1900 census entry showed she had given birth to 9 children, and that only 7 were still living at that time (by my calculation, 8 were still living). The two deeds from 1902 name many of the heirs also. I think between the two deeds, all are named except Rhoda and Martha (who is proven by other sources). Rhoda may not belong here at all (see her entry below for more on that subject).

Although Wilkie died in 1870, his land was not divided until 1902. Apparently this was due to Mary's advancing age. She was named on the first deed, but not the second.

On 19 Apr 1902 several heirs were named in a deed selling 2/3rds of Wilkie's land to J. M. R. Dehart. Here is who signed (mostly by initial): S. H. Grant (Sarah H. Grant), M. A. Grant (Mary Ann Totherow Grant), Jane Grant (Eliza Jane Grant), A. M. Grant (Alfred M. Grant), L. J. Grant (Alfred's wife Lucinda J. Truitt Grant), Mindee Grant (Arminda Grant), J. P. Grant (John Patton Grant), G. A. Grant (John's wife Georgia Ann). Four heirs were not named on this deed, namely son William M. Grant who had died before this (his widow, nor none of his children were mentioned either). Rhoda Grant Dills was not named. I have some doubt that she is actually a child of Wilkie and Mary Ann. Mary L. Grant Lackey and Martha E. Grant Lackey were not named either. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 368).

The other deed was dated 22 Apr 1902, and 1/3 of Wilkie's land was sold to Alfred M. Grant and wife L. J. Grant. The heirs named were: J. P. Grant (John Patton Grant) and wife G. A. Grant (Georgia Ann), L. J. Grant (Elisa Jane), Arminda Grant, T. H. Lackey and wife Mary Lackey, and S. H. Grant (Sarah H. Grant). The only heirs not named in this deed were William (dead), Rhoda Grant Dills (perhaps not a child?), and Martha Grant Lackey.

John Patton Grant was born 11 Feb 1849 (1848 per tombstone) in Macon County, North Carolina. He married twice, first to Eliza Ann Low, and second, to Georgia Ann Warford (widow of George Williams). They lived in the Silver Mine Creek region of Swain County.

See his own page for additional information.

William Marion Grant was born ca 1850/51 in Macon Co, NC. He married twice, first to Mary Lucinda Low, and second, to Sarah Elizabeth Lane (widow of a Mr. Walker). They lived in the Wesser and Silver Mine Creek region of Swain County.

See his own page for additional information.

Eliza Jane Grant was born May 1854 (per 1900 census) in Macon County, North Carolina. She may have been named (in part) for her Aunt Eliza C. Totherow.

She was home with her parents for the 1860 census ("Elisa J." age 6, born Macon), and probably home in 1870 (though this census was horribly inaccurate). In 1870 she was listed as "Sarah" age 16, apparently transposed with sister Sarah who was listed as "Eliza" age 5.

Eliza Jane was still home in 1880 ("Elisa J." age 26), and still home in 1900 ("Liza J." age 46, born May 1854).

On 19 Apr 1902, Jane Grant and her mother and several siblings were named on a deed selling part of Wilkie's land to J. M. R. Dehart. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 368).

On 22 Apr 1902, L. J. Grant and several of her siblings deeded more of their father's land in Swain County. This being 1/3 part, sold to their brother Alfred M. Grant and his wife Lucinda. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 530).

I did not find Eliza Jane Grant on the 1910 census.

Alfred M. Grant was born 28 Nov 1858 in Macon Co, NC. He married Lucinda J. Truitt. They lived in the Wesser Creek region of Swain County.

See his own page for additional information.

Rhoda Ellen Grant was born August 1860 (per 1900 census) in Macon County, North Carolina. She was most likely named for her grandmother Rhoda Shope Totherow.

Rhoda was home with her widowed mother in 1870, listed as "Rhoda" age 13 (which is off quite a bit). As I've noted elsewhere, the 1870 census record for Welch's township of Macon County was one of the worst I've ever seen (very faulty information for many of the families). Almost every member of every family I've checked on this particular census was wrong. Not just the ages (which is common on most census records), but the names were wrong too.

I should note that it has often occurred to me that Rhoda might not be a child of Wilkie and Mary Ann. My only evidence for putting her here is that someone named "Rhoda" was with them in 1870. However, as I've noted above, the 1870 census record was horribly messed up for most of the families in Welch's township. It is quite possible that Rhoda was actually a daughter of William C. Grant (1826) and Eliza Totherow instead. She did live near them in Macon County for many years after her marriage. And she was married in Macon (when her mother lived in Swain, and this would be unusual). Also, Rhoda was not named in any of the 1902 deeds dividing up Wilkie's property in Swain County. It is true (if she is Wilkie's child) that William and Eliza would be her Uncle and Aunt, so it is reasonable for them to live near each other and be closely associated without them being her parents. However, I just thought I'd point this out as a possibility. I'd love to find something conclusive to attach her to Wilkie or to William, other than the faulty 1870 census record.

On 16 Sep 1877, Daniel B. Dills married R. E. Grant in Macon County. They were married by Mark May, Minister. "R. E." was listed as age 17 (born ca 1859/60). Daniel B. Dills was born March 1855 (per 1900 census), probably in Macon County or nearby. I have not yet identified his parents.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Macon County in Nantahala Township (which borders Swain County's Nantahala Township). They were just two houses from William C. Grant (1826) and Eliza Totherow Grant (who was Rhoda's Aunt). This puts them just a mile or two south of where her parents lived (though in Swain County).

As I mentioned above, Rhoda was not named in either of the two 1902 deeds in Swain County dividing up her father Wilkie's property. This may mean she isn't his child (as I've speculated), or it could just mean that she had a different inheritance from the rest. It is difficult to speculate why this is like it is. It may simply be because she didn't live in the same county with the rest of the family.

Sometime in the 1900-1910 timeframe, the Dills moved into neighboring Swain County right into the midst of the Wilkie Grant descendants. (A point in favor of her actually being Wilkie's child). They were in Nantahala Township just 2 houses from Lucinda Grant, widow of Rhoda's brother Alfred M. Grant. This puts them squarely in the Wesser Creek area. They were also just four houses from Noah Ledbetter and wife Gertrude Grant Ledbetter (daughter of John Patton Grant, Rhoda's cousin, not her brother of the same name).

I don't have them on the 1920 census yet.

Arminda Grant was born July 1861 (per 1900 census) in Macon County, North Carolina. She was listed as "Mindee" on some records.

Arminda was probably home with her widowed mother in 1870, even though this census was badly messed up. I think she is the one listed as "James" age 8. The age is close, though the name (and sex) is wrong.

She was not home with her mother in 1880, but I did find her in neighboring Macon County, (though way on the other side of the county) living with her uncle James Totherow (her mother's younger brother).

Arminda came back home to Swain County soon after 1880.

She had a child out of wedlock in 1886 and another one in 1896. I don't know who the father of these children might have been, nor if both had the same father.

Arminda was listed as head of household on the 1900 census, just three houses from her sister Mary Grant Lackey. Arminda's marital status was listed as "Single", and the two children with her were listed as her "daughter" and "son".

On 27 Apr 1901, Arminda Grant witnessed a deed in Swain County from Wilkey Grant and wife M. E. Grant, Charles Grant and wife Amanda Grant, Robert Grant and James Grant to J. S. Jones and wife N. C. Jones for 260 acres. These Grants were Arminda's nephews, sons of her brother William M. Grant. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 24 page 63).

On 19 Apr 1902 Mindee Grant and her mother and several siblings made a deed selling 33 1/3 acres on Wesser Creek to J. M. R. Dehart, being part of their father Wilkie Grant's land. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 368).

On 22 Apr 1902, Arminda Grant, and several siblings made a deed selling 1/3 of Wilkie Grant's land to her brother Alfred M. Grant and his wife Lucinda. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 530).

On 15 Sep 1903 Arminda Grant witnessed a deed from her mother M. A. Grant to the Swain County Board of Education. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 396).

I was unable to locate Arminda Grant on the 1910 census in Swain County. She may have died sometime between 1903 and 1910, or perhaps she moved away, or else married someone yet unidentified. I did find her daughter Annie V. Grant on the 1910 census, so if she were still in Swain that year, perhaps her mother was still around there as well, or perhaps she had died there. It doesn't seem likely she would have moved away leaving a young (but over 21) unmarried daughter behind (Annie was unmarried, but she had one child out of wedlock by 1910).

Sarah H. Grant was born April 1864 (per 1900 census) in Macon County, North Carolina. She may have been named after her mother's sister Sarah Totherow. I don't know what her "H" initial was for, though it could be Haseltine, or Henrietta, or something like that.

Sarah was probably home with her widowed mother in 1870, even though this census was badly messed up. I think she is the one listed as "Eliza" age 5. The age is close, though the name is wrong. I think she and her sister Eliza were transposed, as "Sarah" was listed in 1870, but as age 16 (which more closely matches Eliza).

She was home with her mother in 1880 "Sarah H." age 16.

She was still home in 1900, "Sarah H." age 36, born "Apr 1864".

I found a marriage record that seems to be this Sarah, but it might be someone else. On 18 Jul 1901, Lee S. Gwilliams, age 36 of Jackson County, married Sarah H. Grant, age 37 of Swain. The name and age are a perfect match to be this Sarah. The problem with this is that there are three land deeds the following April (1902) for Sarah, all listing her as Sarah H. Grant. Perhaps the year of the marriage was wrong, or this marriage is for someone else.

On 19 Apr 1902, S. H. Grant and several other heirs of Wilkie sold 33 1/3 acres of Wesser Creek land to J. M. R. Dehart. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 368).

On 19 Apr 1902, T. H. Lackey and wife Mary Lackey (Sarah's sister) sold Sarah H. Grant two tracts of land each being 50 acres. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 369).

On 22 Apr 1902, several heirs of Wilkie Grant, including S. H. Grant sold 1/3rd of Wilkie's land to brother A. M. Grant. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 530).

I did not find Sarah on the 1910 census. I looked for her both as a Grant and as wife of a Mr. Gwilliams, but found neither. Since he was from Jackson, I also looked there.

Mary Louise Grant was born 29 Dec 1866 (per death certificate, and "Dec 1866" per 1900 census) in Macon (now Swain) Co, NC, probably in the Wesser Creek area.  She may have been named "Mary" after her mother, and "Louise" might be after Wilkie's mother "Lou" if that was short for Louisa or Louise.

Mary was probably home with her widowed mother in 1870, even though this census was badly messed up. No one of her name, or close in age was listed.

Mary Louise Grant married Thomas Henry Lackey ca 1880, but I found no marriage record for them in Swain County. Thomas was born July 1857 (per 1900 census) in Macon County, a son of Samuel W. Lackey and Nancy Poindexter.

They were listed on the 1880 census next door to Mary's mother.

On 11 Nov 1889, William C. Grant and wife Eliza C. Grant of Macon County sold Thomas Lackey 150 acres. William was a first cousin of Mary's father Wilkie, but he was also her Uncle by marriage, as his wife Eliza was a sister of Wilkie's wife Mary Ann Totherow. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 11 page 475).

They were listed on the 1900 census in Swain, just a couple of houses from Mary's sister Arminda.

On 19 Apr 1902, T. H. Lackey and wife Mary Lackey sold two 50 acre tracts to sister Sarah H. Grant. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 369).

On 22 Apr 1902, T. H. Lackey and wife Mary were listed on a deed with several other of Wilkie's heirs, selling land their brother A. M. Grant and wife L. J. Grant, being 1/3 or Wilkie's land. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 530).

On 13 Nov 1903 T. H. Lackey and wife Mary sold 150 acres on Silver Creek to W. N. Grant (their nephew). (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 363).

They were listed on the 1910 census in Swain County.

Shortly after this, the Lackeys moved to Union County, South Carolina.

Thomas Henry Lackey died on 18 Jun 1922 in Union Co, SC, and is buried at Round Top Cemetery in Swain County.

Mary Louise Grant Lackey died on 12 Mar 1950 in Lynchburg, Lee County, South Carolina. (This data was shared with me by another researcher). Her death certificate gave her parents names as "Walker I. Grant" and "Mary Ann Totherow". I don't know where she is buried.

Martha Emaline Grant was born August 1869 (per 1900 census) in Macon (now Swain) Co, NC, probably in the Wesser Creek area.  She may have been named "Martha" after Wilkie's grandmother Martha Mackey Grant who probably raised him.

Martha was probably home with her widowed mother in 1870, even though this census was badly messed up. I think she is the one listed as "Amanda" age 1. The age is right, though the name is wrong.

She was home with her mother in 1880 in Swain County, listed as "Martha E." age 10.

On 19 Apr 1891 Martha E. Grant, age 21 "daughter of Wilkie and Mary A. Grant" married Alfred Lackey, age 23, son of Samuel and Nancy Lackey, in Swain County. They were married by C. C. Bryson, Justice of the Peace. Witnesses were A. M. Grant (Martha's brother Alfred), and W. L. Snider.

Alfred Alexander Lackey was born 14 Mar 1868 (another researcher shared this date with me). Her birth date was given as March 1868 on the 1900 census, so it meshes well with the full birth date. Alfred's parents were Samuel W. Lackey and Nancy Poindexter (as proven by his marriage record, and supported by census entries). Alfred's brother Thomas had married Mary Louise Grant in 1880, who was Martha's older sister.

Alfred and Martha and family were listed on the 1900 census in Swain County, just 3 houses from her widowed mother. Alfred's widowed mother was residing with them. It seems likely they were in the Wesser Creek region.

In December 1900, A. A. Lackey and wife Martha Lackey of Swain County sold two tracts of land to A. M. Grant (her brother Alfred). Both tracts were 50 acres each, and on Wesser Creek.  (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 26 page 310).

The above deed may have been the signal for the Lackeys to leave Swain County, for they were in neighboring Jackson County by the time of the 1910 census, living in Qualla Township (which borders Swain County). I'm not sure what drew them over there. A cousin, Isabell Grant Sherrill was there in that township, but not listed nearby. They were listed as being in part of Whittier town. His job was listed as "Trestle Force" for the Railroad. I don't know what that means, but his oldest son had the same job.

By 1920, they had returned to Swain County, but were living in Charleston Township (around Bryson City). They lived on Bennett Road, and Alfred was listed as a Foreman and a Bridge Carpenter. They must have lived in or very close to Bryson City, as one son was listed as a Waiter in a restaurant, and another was a chauffer.
