I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great Grand nephew of Joseph Grant.

Joseph Grant was born ca 1835/36 (per 1850 census) in Macon Co, NC, somewhere near the Cowee community.

He was probably named after his grandfather Joseph Miller and his grandfather Andrew Grant.

Joseph Grant was a son of Thomas B. Grant and Mary Miller. This is proven by the 1850 census.

Joseph's father Thomas died the when he was 9 years old, so he spent much of his youth without a father. He was already married with his own children when his mother remarried in 1861.

Joseph was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40).

Joseph was home with his widowed mother for the 1850 census in Macon Co, NC ("Joseph" age 14, born Macon).

On 11 Dec 1855, Joseph Ander Grant obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Celia E. Price. Solomon Truitt was the bondsman. For some reason it does not appear that they actually got married, since he married someone else just a month later. I searched the 1850 census looking for Celia, and I did not find her in Macon nor any other nearby counties. Since they didn't marry, I guess it doesn't matter anyway. For several years I wasn't sure this was the same Joseph Grant, but it seems very likely that it was.

On 16 Jan 1856, Joseph Grant married Sarah Forister in Macon County. They were married by M. J. Morgan, Justice of the Peace. Sarah A. Forrester was born ca 1837/38 (per 1850 census) or March 1841 (per 1900 census) in Macon County, daughter of Jonathan Forrester and Lucinda F. Millsaps.

They were listed on the 1860 census in Macon County just a few households from Sarah's widowed mother and several of her siblings. They were just three houses from 1st cousin Wilkie I. Grant (1820). This census records shows that Joseph had $2000 worth of property. I'm not sure where he got it, unless it was inherited from his father-in-law who died in the 1850's. I didn't find any deeds showing Joseph receiving land from anyone.

Between 1867 and 1869, Joseph moved his family to Kentucky. I base this on the birthplace of daughter Martha who was born December 1870 (per 1900 census) in Kentucky.

For years, I did not have them on the 1870 census. Today I used the indexes at Ancestry.com and found several Josephs in Kentucky in 1870. After checking several of them I finally found the right Joseph in Jackson County, Kentucky. They apparently moved there ca 1867-1869. After 20 years of wondering where he was, now I know!

They moved to Monroe County, Tennessee by 1872, based on the birth date and place of their son James H. Grant.

Joseph Grant died sometime between 1872 and 1874. His nephew John Stamper said that Uncle Joe was killed after being thrown from a mule in Texas. I'm reasonably sure that it was probably Tennessee and not Texas, but it could have been Texas. Since his son was born in Monroe County, Tennessee in 1872, perhaps that is where Joseph died. (Thanks to Hiram Grogan for sharing this story)

Widow Sarah moved back to Macon County, North Carolina by 1874. A deeded dated 12 Dec 1874 shows Sarah Grant of Macon sold two parcels of land to her brother William C. Forester of Swain, being her 1/7 interest in two parcels in Swain County on the Tennessee River, 61 acres and 130 acres, being inherited from her father Jonathan Forester, deceased. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 36 page 394).

Sarah and her children were listed on the 1880 census in Macon County in Nantahala Township. She was next door to daughter Rachel, and just a few houses from her brother James Forrester.

For the 1900 census, Sarah was with her daughter Martha Grant Owenby still in Macon County in Nantahala Township. She was just a few houses from daughter Ellender Grant Owenby. Although it doesn't say so, I think they were in the Briartown area (borders Swain County).

Sarah A. Forrester Grant died on 29 May 1917 in Macon County. Her death record gave her name as Sarah A. Grant, parents John Forster and Lu Millsaps, and that she died in Nantahala Township. (Macon Co, NC Death Records Book 2 page 246).

I don't know where Sarah was buried, but Briartown is a possibility.

Children

Joseph and Sarah had seven children as proven by the 1860 through 1910 census records. Sarah's 1910 census entry confirms this by showing she had given birth to 7 kids, all of whom were still living at the time.

Rachel Lucinda Grant (1857)

Nancy C. Grant (c1859)

William Martin Grant (1861)

Thomas Perry Grant (1864)

Ellender Elvira Grant (c1867)

Martha Margaret Grant (1869)

James Henry Grant (1872)

Rachel Lucinda Grant was born Feb 1857 (per 1900 census) in Macon County, North Carolina. She was home with her parents for the 1860 census ("Rachel L." age 3, born Macon), and home in 1870 ("Rachael L." age 14, born NC).

On 4 Sep 1877, Rachel L. Grant, age 20 of Swain County married John M. Swafford, age 21 also of Swain. They were married in Swain County by A. A. Justice, Justice of the Peace (his surname was tailor made for the job!) at Mrs. C. Morgan's house in Nantahala Township. Witnesses were C. Morgan, Martha Morgan and William Jenkins. John M. Swafford was born January 1854 in South Carolina (county unknown). I don't know who his parents were.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Macon County in Nantahala Township (probably in the Briartown region) next door to Rachel's widowed mother.

On 30 Sep 1923, Rachel Grant Swafford died in Macon County. Her death record gave her name as Rachel Loucinda Swafford. Her parents were given as Joseph Grant and Sarah Foster. She died in Burningtown Township. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book 4 page 9).

I don't know when John M. Swafford died.

Nancy C. Grant was born ca 1858/59 (per 1860 census) in Macon County, North Carolina. She was home with her parents for the 1860 census ("Nancy C." age 1, born Macon), and home in 1870 ("Nancy C." age 12, born NC).

She was not home with her mother in 1880, nor did I find a marriage record for her in Macon County, nor elsewhere. I don't think she died in this timeframe, but she probably married someone yet unknown.

Her mother Sarah reported for the 1910 census that she had 7 children born, all 7 still living, so that tells me that Nancy was probably still living at that time, and married to someone. I would guess she was still in the Macon County area.

William Martin Grant was born November 1861 (per 1900 census) in Macon County, North Carolina. He was home with his parents for the 1870 census ("William M." age 8, born NC).

On 1 Sep 1878, W. M. Grant, age 17, married H. E. Dalrymple age 18 in Macon County, married by J. M. Forrester. Hester C. Dalrymple was born July 1861 in Macon County, daughter of James Dalrymple and Mandy Hogan.

William Martin Grant died in January 1926 in Macon County. His death record gave his name as Mart Grant, and that he died in Nantahala Township, and his parents were given as Joe Grant and Sarah Farister. (Macon Co, NC Death Records Book 7A page 114).

Hester died on 5 Apr 1949 in Macon County. Her death record gave her name as Hettie Grant, and that she died in Nantahala Township. Her parents were given as Jimmy Dyrample and Mandy Hogan. (Macon Co, NC Death Records Book 28 page 117).

I don't know where they are buried, but I would guess Briartown Cemetery.

Thomas Perry Grant was born March 1864 (per 1900 census) in Macon County, North Carolina. He was home with his parents for the 1870 census ("Thomas." age 6, born NC). He was with his widowed mother in 1880 ("Thomas." age 15, born NC).

Thomas married his 2nd cousin Elizabeth D. Grant on 24 Mar 1885 in Macon Co, NC. She was a daughter of William C. Grant and Eliza C. Totherow.

On 10 Aug 1890, Thomas witnessed the marriage of J. J. Grant (his brother-in-law Joshua Jackson Grant) and Lizzie Guffee in Macon County.

They were listed on the 1900 census in Macon Co, NC in Nantahala Township. They were next door to William Forrester (1871), probably a cousin.

Her father was listed as "Walnon Grant" born Yancey Co, NC, and her mother was "Elvara Totherow" born Haywood Co, NC. The informant was G. W. Hurst and her burial was listed at Briertown Cemetery (Macon Co, NC). Though this death certificate had errors on it (mainly in spelling of her parents names, and her birth year) it confirms that her father was born in Yancey Co, NC. (Swain Co, NC Death Records Book 3 page 187).

Thomas was listed on the 1920 census in Swain County in Nantahala Township. He was listed alone, and widowed.

On 5 May 1922, T. P. Grant age 58 of Swain, married Lou Grant, age 51, also of Swain. They were married in Swain by O. P. Williams, Baptist Minister (who himself was married to Henrietta P. Grant, a cousin of Thomas). Sarah Louisa Grant was born December 1871 in Macon County, a sister of his first wife, and a daughter of William C. Grant and Eliza C. Totherow.

I don't know when either of these died, nor where they are buried.

Ellender Elvira Grant was born ca 30 Jul 1865 (per tombstone ) in Macon County, North Carolina. She was home with her parents for the 1870 census ("Ellen E." age 3, born NC). She was with her widowed mother in 1880 ("Elvira." age 12, born NC).

On 18 Nov 1880, Ellen Grant, age 15 married Thomas Owenby age 21 in Macon County. They were married by J. M. Forester, Justice of the Peace. Thomas Owenby was born 11 Dec 1860 (per tombstone ) in North Carolina. I don't know how he is related to Russell L. Owenby who married Ellen's sister Martha. They could be brothers, or at least cousins. I don't know who Thomas' parents were.

For the 1900 census, they were in Macon County in Nantahala Township. Although it doesn't say so, I think they were in the Briartown area (borders Swain County). They were just a few houses from her sister Martha Grant Owenby. T

On 12 Jan 1902 Thomas Owenby witnessed the Macon County marriage of G. W. Deweese and Manda Grant (Ellen's niece).

Thomas Owenby died on 11 Nov 1903 and is buried at Briartown Cemetery in Macon County.

I did not find Ellen on the 1910 census, nor on the 1920 census (I only looked in Macon County for her). She is buried beside Thomas at Briartown, but her tombstone has no date of death listed.

Martha Margaret Grant was born Dec 1869 (per 1870 census) in Jackson County, Kentucky. She was home with her parents for the 1870 census ("Margaret M." age 6 months, born December, born KY). She was with her widowed mother in 1880 ("Martha M." age 10, born KY).

On 5 Apr 1895, Martha M. Grant, age 28, married R. L. Owenby, age 30 in Macon County. They were married by F. M. Morgan, Minister. Russell L. Owenby was born March 1868 in Georgia (perhaps Union County, as there were numerous Owenby's there). I don't know who his parents were.

For the 1900 census, they were in Macon County in Nantahala Township was just a few houses from sister Ellender Grant Owenby. Although it doesn't say so, I think they were in the Briartown area (borders Swain County). Martha's widowed mother was living with them.

On 3 Sep 1908, Russell L. Owenby witnessed the Macon County marriage of D. A. Grant (Dillis Grant) his wife's nephew to M. E. Grant (Minnie Grant, a cousin).

They were still in Macon County for the 1910 census, in Nantahala Township, Briartown Precinct. For some reason, Martha was listed as "Vira", but it was still her for her mother Sarah was living with them.

I have no data on them after this.

James Henry Grant was born 5 Feb 1872 (per tombstone) in Tennessee. Someone told me he was born in Monroe County, but I don't know what the proof of that is. He may have been named for his uncle James Forrester.

He was home with his widowed mother in 1880 ("James H." age 8, born Tennessee).

On 16 Aug 1889, J. Henry Grant age 17, married Tiny A. Martin age 18 in Macon County, married by W. C. Mason, Minister. Haseltine A. Martin was born 3 Apr 1870 in Macon County (presumably). I don't know who her parents were.

They were listed on the 1900 census in Macon County in Nantahala Township. They were next door to John Forrester (1866), probably an Uncle or cousin.

I didn't find them in 1910.

They were in Briartown for the 1920 census.
