I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin, 4 times removed to Alfred M. Grant.

Alfred M. Grant was born 28 Nov 1858 (per tombstone) in Macon Co, NC (per 1860 census). I don't know what his "M" middle initial might stand for, but it seems very likely that he was named after his uncle Alfred M. Totherow,

Alfred M. Grant is a son of Wilkie I. Grant and Mary Ann Totherow as proven by the 1860 census and various other records.

Alfred was home with his parents for the 1860 census ("Alfred M." age 2, born Macon).

He was probably home in 1870, though the census taker did a horrible job in Welch's township of Macon County (where the family was listed), messing up most of the households. No one of Alfred's name, nor anyone close to his age was listed with his family. Since every other entry in his mother's household was wrong also (names and ages), it just stands to reason that he was home, but the census taker messed up.

In 1871, Swain County was formed, including the area where the Grant family resided.

On 17 Jul 1875, Alfred Grant, age 21 of Swain County, married Lucinda Truett age 20 of Swain. They were married by Young Ammons, Baptist Minister at Hightower School house in Nantahala Township. Witnesses were John Edwards, Jeff Edwards and J. M. Edwards. Lucinda J. Truitt was born 22 Mar 1857 (per tombstone) in Macon County, daughter of John W. Truitt and Franky Mira Elizabeth McGaha.

Alfred and family were listed on the 1880 census in Swain County, in Nantahala Township, but not too close to any of his Grant relations.

On 31 Dec 1884, Alfred M. Grant and wife Lucinda J. Grant and several of her Truitt relatives sold 100 acres to E. Everett of Swain County, and C. E. Graham of Buncombe County. The grantors were: J. W. Truitt and wife M. H. Truitt (Lucinda's parents), Larena E. Dehart (Lucinda's sister), Anritta M. Truitt (Lucinda's sister), D. A. Welch and E. M. Welch (don't know who they are), A. M. Grant and L. J. Grant, all of Swain County. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 6 page 255).

On 16 Mar 1886 A. M. Grant and wife L. J. Grant sold timber rights to W. Morris and W. A. Hoskins of Monroe Co, TN. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 32).

On 19 Apr 1891, Alfred witnessed the marriage of his sister Martha Grant to Alfred Lackey in Swain County.

On 8 May 1892, Alfred witnessed the marriage of John Wadkins (Watkins) to Iowa McCoy (a first cousin of Lucinda's, being a daughter of Aaron Miller, Lucinda's Uncle).

On 13 Jun 1892, A. M. Grant (and J. N. Truitt, Lucinda's Uncle) were named as administrators of the estate of W. M. Grant, deceased (William M. Grant, Alfred's brother). (Swain Co, NC Administration Bonds 1873-1908 page 49).

On 27 Sep 1895 Alfred M. Grant signed a deed of lease with Singer Manufacturing Company for the rent of Sewing Machine. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 17 page 269).

On 21 Jul 1898, John R. Edwards and wife Sarah Edwards, sold property to A. M. Grant and wife Lucinda Grant. (Didn't get details of the property). Sarah Truitt Edwards is Lucinda's Aunt. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 21 page 120).

Alfred and family were listed on the 1900 census in Swain County. They were listed between children of Alfred's brother William Grant. I think they were somewhere along Wesser Creek.

On 1 Dec 1900, A. M. Grant and wife L. J. Grant, sold 100 acres on the Nantahala River to W. P. Grant and wife G. A. Grant. W. P. is William P. Grant, son of Alfred's brother John Patton Grant. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 23 page 139).

In December 1900, A. A. Lackey and wife Martha Lackey (Alfred Grant's sister) sold A. M. Grant two tracts of land, 50 acres each on Wesser Creek. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 26 page 310).

On 19 Apr 1902, Alfred's mother and several of her children sold 33 1/3 acres (being 2/3rds of Wilkie's 50 acres purchased in 1856) to J. M. R. Dehart. This left 1/3rd of the land in Mary Ann's hands (or someone's). The deed was signed by S. H. Grant (Sarah H. Grant), M. A. Grant (Mary Ann Totherow Grant), Jane Grant (Eliza Jane Grant), A. M. Grant (Alfred M. Grant), L. J. Grant (Lucinda J, wife of Alfred), Mindee Grant (Arminda), J. P. Grant (John Patton Grant), G. A. Grant (Georgia, wife of John), all of Swain County. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 368).

On 22 Apr 1902, several heirs of Wilkie Grant, sold their 1/3rd of his land to A. M. Grant and wife L. J. Grant. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 530)

Alfred M. Grant died on 15 May 1904 at the age of 45. He is buried at Wesser Creek Cemetery in Swain County. I have been to his grave a couple of times. It is marked "A. M. Grant Nov 28 1858 - May 15 1904".

On 3 Jun 1904, J. W. Breedlove and wife Manerva, sold 16 acres on Nantahala River to L. J. Grant, and another tract of 50 acres. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 528).

Lucinda and her unmarried children were listed on the 1910 census in Swain County. Several of her children were nearby.

On 31 May 1912, L. J. Grant deeded 15 acres to George W. Dehart and wife Vinnie Dehart (Lucinda's daughter). (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 35 page 571).

I didn't find Lucinda on the 1920 census, though I found most of her children still in the Wesser Creek area.

Lucinda J. Truitt Grant died on 27 Nov 1933, and is buried at Wesser Creek Cemetery. I've seen her grave a couple of times. It reads "Lucinda Grant w/o A. M. Grant Mar 22 1851 - Nov 27 1933".

Children

Alfred and Lucinda had nine children as proven by the various census records.

James S. Grant (1876)

Wilkie I. Grant (1878)

Mira Haseltine Grant (1880)

John Wesley Grant (1882)

Mary Lina Grant (1885)

Neviel Carroll Grant (1889)

Sarah L. Grant (1892)

Amos Allen Grant (1894)

Callie M. Grant (1896)

James S. Grant was born 1 May 1876 in Swain County. He used the nickname "Jim" (per Jack Barnett). I don't know what his "S" middle initial stood for. I don't know who James might have been named for. He did have an uncle James W. Truitt, and a Great Uncle James Totherow.

Jim was home with his parents for the 1880 census ("James S." age 4).

On 16 Dec 1897, James S. Grant, age 21, married Rachel A. Grant in Macon County. They were married by E. N. Dalrymple, Justice of the Peace. Rachel Ann Grant was born 31 Aug 1879 in Macon County, daughter of William Martin Grant and Hester C. Dalrymple. William was a son of Joseph Grant (c1836). James and Rachel were 3rd cousins.

On 17 Apr 1898, James Grant witnessed the marriage of his brother Wilkie Grant to Lillie Hamrick in Swain County.

James and Rachel were listed on the 1900 census in Swain County next door to his brother Wilkie, and two houses from his parents.

On 23 Dec 1900, James Grant witnessed the marriage of his sister Liney Grant to James H. Hayes in Swain County.

On 18 Sep 1905, J. M. R. Dehart and wife S. A. Dehart sold 30 acres to James S. Grant. The land adjoined Lucinda Grant (James' mother) and A. M. Totherow (James' Uncle). James Merrit R. Dehart was James S. Grant's Uncle (by marriage).  (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 28 page 143).

On 11 Apr 1908 J. S. Grant and wife R. A. Grant sold property to N. C. Grant (his brother Neviel C. Grant). I didn't get the details of the deed. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 31 page 267).

James and Rachel were listed on the 1910 census in Swain County just a few houses from various relatives.

Rachel Ann Grant Grant died on 2 Oct 1962, and James S. "Jim" Grant died on 7 Jan 1976. They are both buried at Briertown Cemetery in Macon County (near the Swain County line). As far as I can tell, they never had any children.

Wilkie I. Grant was born May 1878 (per 1900 census) in Swain County. He used the nickname "Pet" (per Jack Barnett). It seems obvious that he was named for his grandfather Wilkie I. Grant.

Wilkie was home with his parents for the 1880 census ("Wilky I." age 2).

On 13 Mar 1898, Wilkie witnessed the marriage of his sister Tiny to Rufus P. Lindsey in Swain County.

On 17 Apr 1898 Wilkie married Lillie L. Hamrick in Swain County. Their marriage record gave much information. Wilkey Grant age 19, son of A. M. and Lucinda Grant, and Lillie Hamrick age 18, daughter of W. C. and Sallie Hamrick. They were married at Nantahala by H. J. Hogue. Witnesses were H. J. Hogue, J. S. Grant (Wilkie's brother) and R. L. Linsey (Brother-in-law). Lillie L. Hamrick was born April 1880 (per 1900 census) in Swain County, daughter of W. C. and Sarah (---) Hamrick.

Wilkie and Lillie were listed on the 1900 census in Swain County next door to his parents, and next to brother James S. Grant. Strangely, Lillie was listed as having given birth to 1 child, who was still living, but no child was listed with them. There is a mistake here, but I'm not sure which. Either she had one child who had died, or they had a child, but for some reason he/she was not listed with them.

I did not find Wilkie nor Lillie on the 1910 or 1920 census in Swain County. I don't know if they moved away, or if both died in that timeframe.

Mira Haseltine Grant was born February 1880 (per 1900 census) in Swain County. She used the nickname "Tiny". It seems likely that he was named in part for her grandmother Mira McGaha Truitt.

Tiny was home with her parents for the 1880 census ("Mira H." age 4 months, born Feb 1880).

On 13 Mar 1898, Tiny married Rufus Page Lindsey in Swain County. Their marriage record gave much information. It listed him as "Rufus Page Lindsey" age 27, son of (blank) and Becky Lindsey. It listed her as Tiny Grant, age 18, daughter of A. M. and Lucinda Grant. They were married at A. M. Grants in Nantahala, by T. J. Montieth. Witnesses were A. A. Lackey (Tiny's Uncle), C. P. Truett and W. Grant.

They were listed on the 1900 census in Swain County next to her brother John W. Grant.

I did not find them on the 1920 census in Swain County.

John Wesley Grant was born 22 Mar 1882 (per tombstone) in Swain County, North Carolina. He may have been named after his grandfather John W. Truitt.

On 4 Sep 1899 John W. Grant married Nancy Elvira Franklin. The marriage record showed John as age 21, son of A. M. and Lucinda Grant, and Elvira as 21, daughter of Andy and Betty Franklin. Nancy Elvira Franklin was born 28 Nov 1874 (per tombstone) in Swain County, daughter of Andrew Franklin and Elizabeth "Betty" ---.

John and family were listed on the 1900 census in Swain County near several relatives.

Nancy Elvira Franklin Grant died on 31 Dec 1953, and is buried at Wesser Creek Cemetery. Her stone says "Nancy E. Grant Jan 28 1874 - Dec 31 1953".

John and Nancy had nine known children, as proven by the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census. The three youngest post date John's death by several years, so they are either grandkids instead, or else were born out of wedlock to Nancy in her widowhood.

If I'm not mistaken, there was an article in one of the "Heritage Books" (probably Swain County) about this family. I don't have the details of the article.

Mary Lina Grant was born August 1885 (per 1900 census) in Swain County, North Carolina. She may have been named in part after her grandmother Mary Totherow Grant.

She was home with her parents for the 1900 census ("Mary L." age 14, born Aug 1885).

On 23 Dec 1900, Liney Grant married James H. Hayes in Swain County. Their marriage record showed him as "James H. Hayes" age 20, son of Jim and Bettie Ann Hayes, and her as "Liney Grant" age 15, daughter of A. M. and L. J. Grant. They were married at A. M. Grants by J. H. Hogue. Witnesses were J. R. Grant (possibly her first cousin Jesse R. Grant) and James Grant (her brother James S. Grant). James H. Hayes was born ca 1879 in Tennessee, son of James Hayes and Elizabeth Ann ---.

I did not find them on the 1910 or 1920 census in Swain County.

Neviel Carroll Grant was born 29 Aug 1889 (per tombstone) in Swain County. I have no idea who (if anyone) he was named after.

Neviel was home with his parents for the 1900 census ("Nevil C." age 10, born Aug 1889).

On 11 Apr 1908, J. S. Grant (his brother) and wife R. A. Grant sold property to N. C. Grant. I didn't get the details of the deed. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 31 page 267).

On 3 Mar 1909 (source?) Neviel C. Grant married Rutha Holden in Swain County. Rutha was born 14 Nov 1888 in Swain, daughter of Verge Holden and Katherine Robbins. I believe I got their marriage date, and her parents from Jack Barnett.

Neviel and family were listed on the 1910 census in Swain County just two houses from his widowed mother. A sister of Rutha was residing with them.

In 1920 they were in Swain County, just a couple of houses from sister Callie Grant Gassaway.

Rutha Holden Grant died on 25 Apr 1960, and Neviel Carroll Grant died on 15 Mar 1979. They are buried at the Euchella Cemetery in Swain County, which is very close to where they had lived on Wesser Creek. My dad and I visited their graves a few years ago.

Circa 1988 or 1989, my grandparents (Garland S. Grant and Luella George Grant) and I visited Wesser Creek, and it just happened that as we passed a house with a Grant mailbox we saw a man in the yard. We stopped and introduced ourselves, and he was named Varnel Grant, and was a son of Neviel and Rutha Grant. We figured we were about 3rd cousins (actually he was a 4th cousin to my grandfather, and they were about the same age). He told us about Wesser Creek cemetery just up the road from his house, and we went up there afterwards (my first visit there, but I went again a couple of years later).

Sarah L. Grant was born 13 Mar 1892 (source?) in Swain County. She went by the nickname "Vinie", (per Jack Barnett), so I suspect her middle name was probably "Lavina", but that may not be correct. She may have been named in part for her Aunt Sarah H. Grant.

Vinie was home with her parents for the 1900 census ("Sarah L." age 8, born Mar 1892).

I didn't find a marriage record, but Jack Barnett told me that she married George Dehart. They probably married ca 1906/07 in Swain County. George W. Dehart was born Nov 1887 (per 1900 census) in Swain County. I don't know what the proof is, but someone told me that he was a son of John Patton Dehart (1831) and Ann Smith, born out of wedlock. If true, he should have taken his mother's surname instead of his fathers, though sometimes that isn't the case (but most often it was). However, he was living with his father in 1900, and listed as "son".

They were listed on the 1910 census in Swain County, next door to Sarah's widowed mother.

On 31 May 1912, L. J. Grant (Sarah's mother) deeded land to George W. Dehart and wife Vinnie Dehart, 15 acres. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 35 page 571).

George W. Dehart died between ca 1917 and 1920.

Vinnie was listed as head of household on the 1920 census. Her marital status was listed as "Married", though George was not with her. I'm assuming he had died, since he wasn't listed.

I have no data on Vinnie after this.

Amos Allen Grant was born 13 May 1894 in Swain County. I don't know who (if anyone) he might have been named for.

Amos was home with his parents in 1900 ("Amos A." age 6, born May 1894), and still home in 1910 ("Amos" age 16).

Amos married Flossie Mason sometime before 1913, probably in neighboring Macon County. She was born 5 Feb 1895 in Macon County. I don't know who her parents are.

They were in Macon County for the 1920 census in Briartown Precinct of Nantahala Township.

Amos Allen Grant died 13 Mar 1963 and Flossie Mason Grant died 22 May 1986. They are buried at Briertown Cemetery in Macon County.

Callie M. Grant was born 16 Nov 1896 (per tombstone) in Swain County.

She was home with her parents in 1900 ("Callie M." age 3, born Nov 1896), and still home in 1910 ("Callie" age 14).

Callie M. Grant married Johnny F. Gassaway ca 1910/15 in Swain County, North Carolina. Johnny was born 13 Jan 1890 (per tombstone). I don't know who Johnny's parents are.

Johnny and Callie were listed on the 1920 census in Swain, near several of her siblings.

Callie Grant Gassaway died on 3 Mar 1922 in Swain County. Her death certificate shows her age at death as 25 years 11 months, and her father as "Abe Grant" and mother as "(blank) Truett". She is buried at Wesser Creek Cemetery.

Johnny F. Gassaway died on 24 Mar 1965. He is buried at Wesser Creek Cemetery.
