I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin, 4 times removed to John Patton Grant.

John Patton Grant was born 11 Feb 1849  in Macon Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census). His tombstone gives 11 Feb 1848 as his birth date, and his 1900 census entry gives Feb 1848 also. However, if he was born in 1848, he was born before his parents married (which is possible, but unlikely in this case), however, his 1850 and 1860 census records both give him an age consistent with a February 1849 birth date (age 1 in 1850 and age 11 in 1860). So, I'm adjusting his birth year to 1849, which I feel is correct. However it is possible that it could be 1848. There are three fairly compelling pieces of evidence to support 1848 over 1849. Besides the 1900 census and his tombstone, his death certificate (1938) gave his age as "90", which works out to 1848.

John Patton Grant may have been named after his father's 1st cousin John Patton Grant (1845) (my ancestor) who lived nearby. Or it is possible that he was named after the same person that my John Patton Grant was named for, Colonel John Patton, who was apparently a well respected person in that day (based on the number of people in western North Carolina named for him).

John P. Grant is a son of Wilkie I. Grant and Mary Ann Totherow as proven by the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census and by his death certificate.

John was home with his parents for the 1850 census in Macon County ("John P." age 1, born Macon).

John was still home with his parents for the 1860 census ("John P." age 11, born Macon).

John was home with his widowed mother for the 1870 census in Macon County ("J. P." age 23, born NC).

In 1871, Swain County was formed, including the area where the Grant family resided.

On 24 Sep 1871, John P. Grant married Betsy Ann Low in Macon County (which is where her family resided). Elizabeth Ann Low was born ca 1853/54 in Macon County, daughter of Nathan Low and Elizabeth A. Mason.

Beginning around this time (1871), there is the danger of confusion in the records of Swain County between the two John Patton Grants. Both were about the same age (mine was 4 years older than this one). They lived about 10 miles apart, but both were in Nantahala Township. Generally, I think that I've sorted them correctly for the most part, as this John P. Grant lived in the Silver Mine Creek area (next branch over from Wesser Creek), and this is on the east (and north) side of the Nantahala River. My John Patton Grant lived on the opposite side of the Nantahala River. I can only imagine that the two men knew each other, or at least knew of each other.

On 6 Jan 1873, John witnessed the marriage of his brother William M. Grant to Mary L. Low (sister of John's wife) in Macon County.

On 28 Apr 1874, J. P. Grant received a State grant for 14 acres on Silver Mine Creek. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 11 page 510).

On 14 Mar 1880, George H. Guyer and wife Sophronia sold 100 acres to John P. Grant on Silver Creek (Silver Mine Creek). (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 11 page 508).

John and family were listed on the 1880 census in Swain County, in Nantahala Township, next door to brother William M. Grant and just two houses from their widowed mother.

On 29 Oct 1883 the Commissioners of Swain County School District 8 made a deed of 1 acre to D. A. Welch. The commissioners were A. M. Totherow, Samuel Lackey and J. P. Grant. The deed was witnessed by A. H. Hayes, W. F. Totherow. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 11 page 460).

On 26 Jun 1885, John P. Grant sold timber rights (on 192 acres on Silver Creek) to W. Morris and W. A. Hoskins of Monroe Co, TN. Witnesses were J. M. Roane and R. H. Byrd. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 6 page 297).

In an undated land grant (between 1885 and 1889), W. M. Grant (John's brother) and J. P. Grant received a 129 acre State Land Grant. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 12 page 65).

On 19 Sep 1885, J. P. Grant and W. M. Grant (his brother) sold timber rights to W. Morris and W. A. Hoskins of Monroe Co, TN, rights to timber on their 126 acre Silver Mine Creek land. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 6 page 293).

On 21 Dec 1885, W. M. Grant sold 75 acres to John P. Grant on Silver Mine Creek. This might be William selling his half of their joint 126 acres to John. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 11 page 511).

On 23 Apr 1886, John P. Grant and wife Elizabeth Grant sold timber rights to W. Morris and W. A. Hoskins (didn't get the land description). (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 25).

On 23 Apr 1886 John P. Grant and W. M. Grant sold timber rights to W. Morris and W. A. Hoskins on another tract of land (didn't get description). (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 63).

Elizabeth Ann Low Grant died ca 1889 or thereabouts in Swain County, North Carolina.

John Patton Grant married Georgia Ann Warford (widow of George Williams) circa 1890 in Swain County. I did not find a marriage record. Georgia Ann Warford was born 11 Aug 1865 (per tombstone), in Georgia (per 1900 census). She was previously married to George Williams. Their marriage record (dated 13 Jan 1880 in Swain County) gave her maiden name as "Warford". (I've seen other records give her maiden name as "Walker" and "Wolford"). It did not give her parents, and I have yet to identify them. She apparently had at least two children by her first marriage (John and Callie Williams).

On 18 Dec 1894, R. H. Bird and wife M. J. Bird, and J. P. Grant and wife Georgia Ann Grant sold timber rights to B. R. Patten of Landen Co, Missouri. I'm not sure of the connection to the Bird family. They may be related to Georgia. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 16 page 479).

On 14 Feb 1900, J. P. Grant received a State Land Grant of 93 acres. I didn't get the details, so I'm not sure if this is this John P., or the other one. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 21 page 245).

John and family were listed on the 1900 census in Swain County, in the midst of various married children.

On 3 Mar 1901, John witnessed the marriage of Jud Lindsay to Callie Williams (his step-daughter).

On 15 Jan 1902, John Grant purchased 100 acres from M. W. Breedlove and wife Ida A. Breedlove. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 27 page 586).

On 19 Apr 1902, John's mother and several of the other heirs of Wilkie Grant made a deed selling 33 1/3 acres of Wilkie's Wesser Creek land to J. M. R. Dehart. J.  P. Grant and wife G. A. Grant were among the grantors. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 368).

On 22 Apr 1902, J. P. Grant and wife G. A. Grant, L. J. Grant (John's sister), Arminda Grant (sister), T. H. Lackey and wife Mary Lackey (sister), and S. H. Grant (sister) sold 1/3 of Wilkie Grant's land to A. M. Grant (brother) and wife L. J. Grant. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 530).

On 9 May 1908, John P. Grant purchased land from A. B. Andrews and wife Julia M. Andrews, P. H. Busbee, single, and F. H. Busbee, Trustee, all of Wake County, North Carolina, and A. M. Frye and wife Lillie Reeve Frye of Swain County. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 32 page 488).

On 29 May 1908, John P. Grant and wife G. A. Grant sold land to A. B. Andrews and F. H. Busbee of Wake Co, NC and A. M. Frye of Swain. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 32 page 452).

John and family were listed on the 1910 census in Swain County.

John Patton Grant died on 14 Apr 1938 (per tombstone) or on 15 Apr 1938 (per Death Certificate) in Swain County. His death record shows his name as "John Patten Grant", aged 90 years, 2 months. His father was listed as "Wilkie Grant", and his mother as "Unknown". (Swain Co, NC Death Records Book 22 page 80).

Georgia Ann Warford Williams Grant died on 4 May 1947 (per death certificate) or 31 May 1947 per tombstone. Her death record gave her name as "Georgia Ann Grant", and that her age at death was 81 years, 8 months and 23 days. Her parents were both listed as "Unknown". (Swain Co, NC Death Records Book 31 page 421).

John P. Grant and Georgia are both buried at the Grant Cemetery in Swain County. My dad and I visited this cemetery a couple of years ago. Their stones say "John P. Grant Feb 11 1848 - Apr 14 1938" and "George Ann Grant wf/o J. P. Grant Aug 11 1865 - May 31 1947".

Children

John Patton Grant and wife Elizabeth Ann Low had at least nine children together, eight of them proven by the 1880 and 1900 census. John and second wife Georgia had six children together. She had at least two (or more) by her previous marriage to George Williams. This makes 15 known children for John Patton Grant.

Sarah Emaline Grant was born August 1872 (per 1900 census) in Swain County. She was home with her parents for the 1880 census ("Sarah E." age 7).

Sarah had at least two children out of wedlock in the 1890's. The 1900 census showed her with two kids, both listed as hers, and her marital status was "single". A delayed birth certificate for one of her children listed his parents as "Mart Grant" and "Sarah E. Grant". This can be interpreted three ways. One: Sarah married someone (probably a cousin) named Mart Grant before 1893, who died before 1900 (but why was she listed as "single" and not "widowed" on the 1900 census). Two: Sarah was not married to Mart Grant, but he was the father of at least one of her children. Or three: This name was just made up to cover up an out of wedlock birth.

I have searched in vain to find out who "Mart Grant" could be. "Mart" is obviously short for Martin, and there is only one possibility, and that is William Martin Grant (1861) (son of Joseph Grant). He was married at this time, and lived in neighboring Macon County, but that does not mean it isn't him. There may be other suspects, for there are lots of Grants with "M" middle initials, who's middle names are unknown.

Sarah was listed on the 1900 census next door to her father.

I found a marriage record that is probably for this Sarah, but it may be someone else instead. On 3 Mar 1903, M. M. Moore (or W. M. Moore) age 25, married S. E. Grant age 30 in Swain County. Her age matches, but I can't be totally sure it is her.

I did not find them on the 1910 or 1920 census, but I could easily have missed them.

William P. Grant was born Jun 1875 (per 1900 census) or "1874" per his tombstone. He was born in Swain County.

William was home with his parents for the 1880 census ("William P." age 5).

On 26 Mar 1896, William Grant age 21 married Georgia Dills age 25 in Swain County. Their marriage record gave him as son of John and Elizabeth Grant, and Georgia as daughter of William and Nancy Dills. They were married by W. Hamrick. Witnesses were S. M. Dills, R. N. Dills and W. N. Grant (1st cousin Wilkie N. Grant). Georgia Ann Dills was born May 1869 (per 1900 census) in Georgia (per 1880 census), daughter of William R. Dills and Nancy Watkins.

They were listed on the 1900 census in Swain County, next door to cousin John Wesley Grant (son of Alfred M. Grant), and not too far from William's parents.

On 11 Feb 1907, W. P. Grant and wife G. A. Grant sold property to R. P. Lindsay (cousin-in-law). I didn't get the deed details. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 31 page 89).

On 5 Dec 1907, L. B. Woodard and M. J. Woodard sold W. P. and Georgia Grant, 100 acres of land. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 35 page 481).

They were still in Swain County for the 1910 census, listed near several cousins.

Georgia Ann Dills Grant died on 17 May 1921 in Swain County. Her death certificate gave her name as "Georgia Grant", died Nantahala Township. Born "abt 1896" in Georgia. Age was 25 years and 10 days. (This should have said 52 years, I believe it must have been transposed). Parents: William Dills and Nancy Wilson, both born Georgia. Georgia was buried on 19 May 1921 at Wesser Creek. Her cause of death was Cancer. Her spouse was listed as "Melvin Grant", which must be a miswritten "William".  (Swain Co, NC Death Records Book 5 page 87).

William P. Grant married again sometime after Georgia's death. His second wife was named Emma M. ---, born 1892 (per tombstone). I don't know her maiden name, nor when they married.

William P. Grant died 1957. Emma died 1982. They are buried at Euchella Cemetery in Swain County. Their stone reads "W. P. Grant 1874 - 1957 and Emma M. 1892 - 1982". My dad and I visited this cemetery a few years ago and saw their graves.

Martha A. Grant was born ca 1875/76 in Swain County. She was home with her parents for the 1880 census ("Martha A." age 4).

She was not home in 1900, and I found no marriage record for her, so I suspect she died in the 1880-1900 timeframe, or else married someone unknown (with no record filed).

Thomas Ervin Grant was born March 1878 (per 1900 census).

Thomas was home with his parents for the 1880 census ("Thomas E." age 2).

On 28 May 1899, T. Ervin Grant, age 21, married Nancy Mason age 20 in Swain County. Their marriage record showed him as son of "J. P. and Bettie Grant", and her as daughter of "John T. and Samantha Mason". W. C. Grant witnessed the marriage. (This is probably 1st cousin William Charles Grant). Nancy Ellender Mason was born Jun 1879 (per 1900 census) in Swain County, daughter of John T. Mason and Samantha L. Wilson.

They were listed on the 1900 census just two houses from his father. John Lester Grant (age 2 on this listing) pre-dates their marriage, and on this census he is listed as "son", but on the 1920 census he is listed as Thomas' Step-son. Since his surname was given as "Grant" on all records, I'm not sure how to reconcile this.

I was unable to locate Thomas and family on the 1910 census. They did not seem to be in Swain (nor Macon) County that year.

They were in Swain for the 1920 census just a few houses from his parents. Son John Lester Grant (now married) was here with them as was his new wife, and Lester was listed as "step-son".

Nancy Ellender Mason Grant died around 1935 in Macon County. Her death record had no date of death on it, but was filed with others from 1935. It gave her name as "Nancy Ellender Grant", daughter of John T. Mason and Samantha Wilson.

I don't know when or where Thomas Ervin Grant died.

Perry Nathaniel Grant was born January 1880 (per 1900 census). He was probably named in part after his grandfather Nathan Low.

Perry was home with his parents for the 1880 census ("Perry N." age 6 months, born Dec 1879), and still home in 1900 ("Perry M." age 20, born Jan 1880).

On 18 May 1902, Perry Grant age 22, married Emma Styles age 18 in Swain County. Their marriage record gave him as a son of John and Elizabeth Grant, and her as daughter of Ira and Margaret Styles. Emma Jane Styles was born ca 1883/84 in Swain County, daughter of Ira F. Styles and Margaret ---.

They were listed on the 1910 census in Swain County not very far from his parents.

Lillie E. Grant was born July 1882 (per 1900 census) in Swain County. I don't know what her middle initial stood for. I don't have absolute proof that Lillie is a child of John Patton Grant, but it seems likely that she is.

On 23 Apr 1899, John Stiles age 22 married Lillie Grant age 18 in Swain County. Their marriage record gave his parents as I. F. and Margaret Stiles, and hers as (blank) and (blank), but did state that her father was living, and her mother was deceased. This is one clue what leads me to believe she is John's daughter, as his wife was dead by 1899. The other clue is that John Styles' sister Emma married one of John Patton Grants sons. John P. Styles was born Oct 1875 (per 1900 census) in Swain County, son of Ira F. Styles and Margaret ---.

John and Lillie were listed on the 1900 census in Swain County, next door to Lillie's father.

Dora L. Grant was born August 1887 (per 1900 census) in Swain County. "Dora" is often short for "Eudora", but I don't know if that is the case here or not.

Dora was home with her parents for the 1900 census ("Dora L." age 12, born Aug 1887).

On 28 Nov 1905, Henry Martin age 18, married Dora Grant age 18 at Wesser Creek School house in Swain County. Henry Martin was born ca 1886/87 (per age on marriage record). I have no additional data on him, or them after their marriage.

I found them on the 1910 census, but they were mistakenly listed as "Mathis". They were two houses from Dora's sister Mary Stephenson.

Rosa V. Grant was born August 1889 (per 1900 census) in Swain County. I do not have direct proof that Rosa is John Patton Grant's child, but I feel it is possible. She was not home with him in 1900 (but living with widow Mira Truitt). She married in 1903 to Robert L. Styles, who had two siblings who married Grants, both of whom were children of John Patton Grant. Add this to the fact that William P. Grant (a son of John Patton Grant) was a witness to her marriage, and you have a good case for placing her with John Patton Grant. I would be happier if I could find something solid though, but for the time being I'm leaving Rosa in the John P. Grant family.

I have another theory about her that I'll postulate. Rosa was listed with widow Mira (McGaha) Truitt on the 1900 census. Mira was not head of household, but her son Alexander was. Rosa was listed not as a Grant, but as a Truitt, and listed as "Niece" to Alexander. That means she was a daughter of one of his siblings (and therefore a granddaughter to widow Mira). There were several other nieces and nephews there as well. Mira did have a daughter named Malissa Truitt who had at least one child out of wedlock, so it is quite possible that these others are hers as well. Of course they could belong to a son who died, but then that would not explain the conflicting surnames. So, I'm saying that perhaps Rosa V. Grant (aka Truitt) is a daughter of Malissa Truitt by a Mr. Grant, possibly John P. Grant or one of his older sons (to explain the apparent close connection between her and them). Since she was born after John's first wife died (presumably), but before he married Georgia, that makes him a potential suspect. Of course there are plenty of other possibilities. Alfred M. Grant was married to Lucinda Truitt, a daughter of Mira. Someone in his family could be Rosa's father.

One other possibility is that Rosa was a daughter of Sarah Emaline Grant (1872), John Patton Grant's oldest child. She had two other children out of wedlock. If Rosa was hers, then perhaps her father was one of the sons of Mira Truitt, thus explaining why she was with them in 1900.

As I mentioned above, Rosa was listed with the Truitts in 1900. Their nearest Grant neighbors (who were very close by) were all members of the Alfred M. Grant (1858) family (who was married to Mira Truitt's daughter Lucinda).

On 19 Sep 1920, J. G. Grant age 28, married Caroline Osburn age 21, in Swain County. They were married by J. H. Grant, Missionary Baptist Minister, at Nantahala Township. Carolyn Osburn was born "1898" per her tombstone. I don't know who her parents are.

James G. Grant died on 31 Jul 1964, and Carolyn died in 1971. They are buried at the Grant cemetery with his parents. Their stones say "James G. Grant Apr 5 1891 - Jul 31 1964" and "Carolyn Grant 1898 - 1971".

John H. Grant married Cora D. --- sometime between 1910 and 1917 in Swain County. She was born "1899" per her tombstone. I don't know her maiden name.

Zebulon Vance Grant was born 22 Oct 1894 (per tombstone) in Swain County. Zeb Grant was a twin to Edward Harrison Grant. Zeb was named for former North Carolina Governor Zebulon Vance.

Zeb was home with his parents for the 1900 census ("Zeb V." age 5, born Oct 1894), and still home in 1910 ("Zebb" age 15). He was still home in 1920 as well ("Zeb" age 25).

Zebulon V. Grant married someone between 1920 and 1930, but I don't have his wife's name yet.

Zebulon Vance Grant died on 5 Dec 1933 (per death certificate) or 6 Dec 1933 per tombstone. His death record gave his name as "Zebulon V. Grant", aged 39 years, 1 month. Father: John P. Grant, mother: Georgean Adams (which is wrong). (Swain Co, NC Death Records Book 17 page 58).

He is buried at Wesser Creek Cemetery. His marker says "Zebulon V. Grant NC Pvt 1CL 324 Inf 81 Div Dec 6 1933". The military inscription must refer to World War I service.

His birth certificate gave his name as "Edward Harrison Grant", born Wesser, father "John Patton Grant", mother "Georgia Ann Wolford". (Swain Co, NC Delayed Birth Certificates Book 11 page 285).

Hattie H. Grant Robbins died on 5 Apr 1927 in Swain County and is buried at Wesser Creek Cemetery.

I don't know when A. L. Robbins died.

Henry Lawton Grant was born ca 1902/03 (per 1910 census) in Swain County, North Carolina. I have no idea who he might have been named after.

He was home with his parents for the 1910 census ("Henry L." age 7), and home in 1920 ("Laughton" age 16).

On 19 Sep 1920, H. L. Grant, age 18 married Ardelia Mashburn age 21 in Swain County, by J. H. Grant, Missionary Baptist Minister at Nantahala Township. (I'm not sure which J. H. Grant this was who married them). Ardelia was born ca 1898/99 (per age on marriage record), presumably in Swain County. I don't know who her parents were.

I have no additional data on Henry and Ardelia.
