I (Marty Grant) am not related to the Ephraim Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.

Ephraim Grant was born ca 1772/73 in the West Indies (per the 1850 and 1860 census). I don't know who his parents were, nor if he is related to the other Grant families in Wayne Co, NC, but he lived near several other families and his children intermarried with them, so it seems likely they are connected somehow.

I have a theory, based on very circumstantial evidence, that Ephraim is a son, or a brother of Jesse Grant of Duplin Co, NC. Ephraim was often associated with Daniel Grant, and was old enough to be his father, but wasn't. I think that they are Uncle and nephew instead. Daniel was apparently an orphan in Duplin Co, NC, and the only Grant in the area had been Jesse Grant who married Jean Burns in 1794. Jesse had been in Duplin since at least 1785, and if Jean Burns was a 2nd wife, he could easily be the father of both Ephraim and Daniel. We don't know if Jesse was born in the West Indies or not, but he could have been. There is no record of him (so far) before 1785, and since Ephraim was born ca 1773 in the West Indies, it is possible that Jesse had been there at that time. Just speculation though.

There was an Ephraim Grant listed in Dobbs Co, NC records as having received a bounty from Richard Caswell on 19 May 1778 (for military service). This can't possibly be the same Ephraim under study here, but there must be some connection.

The earliest record I've found for Ephraim is his service in the War of 1812. He was included on the Muster list for Wayne Co, NC. He married Nancy Kinchen around this same time. I have no proof of her maiden name, but Ruth Westbrook said it was "Kinchen", but I don't know what the evidence is. Their oldest son was named "Kinchen Grant", so it seems like it could be based on that. I found no one of the "Kinchen" surname in 1800, 1810, 1820 or 1830 census in Wayne Co, NC. She may have been from a neighboring county, or perhaps that isn't her surname. More research is needed on that subject.

Ephraim lived in New Hope District. New Hope District presumably covers the same territory as modern New Hope Township. This is the area east of Goldsboro with the Neuse River as its southern border all the way East to the Lenoir County line and for a northern border it may be West Bear Creek. The western border is the town of Goldsboro. That is a large area, and without consulting deeds and other records I can't narrow it down any better. I will check out Grant family deeds eventually to narrow down where these folks lived.

Ephraim Grant was listed on the 1820 census in Wayne Co, NC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetized, so we can't tell where he lived nor who his neighbors were.

					Anne GRANT (1819/20) daughter

Ephraim Grant was still in Wayne Co, NC for the 1830 census. Once again the census was in alpha order by each district, so we can't tell who his exact neighbors were, but we can figure out who his general neighbors were. He was in Captain Whitfield's company, which is the area including New Hope District. The enumerations for this census for Ephraim's family is off in many ways. Both he and his wife are in the wrong age categories, as are several of the children. It is probably a safe assumption that the census taker got this information from a neighbor or from a member of the family who didn't know much (a child perhaps).

The 1840 census of Wayne Co, NC shows Ephraim listed in New Hope District. On the same page was Susan Grant, widow of Elisha Grant, and on the next page just a few houses away were several other Grant families including Daniel Grant, Kinchen Grant (son of Ephraim Grant), Jesse Grant (also son of Ephraim), Stephen Grant, and John Grant. All of them in such close proximity strongly suggests they are all related to one another. Unlike the 1830 census, the 1840 census record for Ephraim seems to be more accurate.

In the 1850 census, Ephraim Grant was still in Wayne Co, NC and listed in the district North of the Neuse River (which includes New Hope District). He was only 5 houses from Susan Grant, widow of Elisha Grant. Elisha was old enough to be the father of Ephraim, but I have no proof that he is the father.

Wright Davis was with the family in both 1850 and 1860. I don't know how, or if, he is related to Ephraim and Nancy.

Ephraim Grant made his Will on 30 Dec 1860 in Wayne Co, NC and named his wife Nancy Grant, sons Jeremiah Grant, Jesse Grant, Kinchen Grant, daughters Smithy Grant, Polly Anderson, Ann Anderson, Charity Johnson, Elizabeth Hinson. As Executor he named : Richard D. Hinson. Witnesses were: G.C. Moses, A.J. Whitley.

Children

Ephraim and Nancy's children are all proven by Ephraim's Will of 1860. Census records (1820 and 1830) seem to indicate one other daughter who is currently unknown.

Kinchen Grant (c1814)

Jeremiah Grant (c1818)

Anne Grant (c1820)

Elizabeth Grant (c1822)

Smithy Grant (c1823)

Jesse Grant (c1824)

Charity Grant (c1825)

Mary "Polly" Grant (c1830)

Kinchen Grant was born ca 1813/14 in Wayne Co, NC, presumably in New Hope District. He married Penelope Williams ca 1830/34 in Wayne Co, NC. (Her maiden name is per Jonny Alexander). Kinchen was listed on the 1840 census in Wayne Co, NC near most of the other Wayne Co, NC Grant's including his father Ephraim. He was in New Hope District. The 1840 census shows an older boy (c1820/25) residing with the family. Could be a laborer. There was also an unknown male child born ca 1835/40 who could be another son we don't know about.

1840 census analysis (based on available evidence):

1 Male(s) 15-19 (1820-1825)	Brother? Laborer?
2 Male(s) 0-4 (1835-1840)	Dennis GRANT (1833/34) son
					Son?
1 Female(s) 20-29 (1810-1820)	Penelope WILLIAMS Grant (1817/18) wife
1 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840)	Winniford GRANT (1833/34) daughter

For some reason, Kinchen was listed as "Richard" in the 1850 census. This is probably because census takers were supposed to make a second copy of the census for the Federal copy (the original stayed in the county or at the state, and most of those were lost over the years). He probably misread his own handwriting and put "Richard" in place of "Kinchen" for the Federal copy. In 1850 Kinchen was in the district North of the Neuse River, just 5 houses from his brother Jesse Grant.

By 1860 Kinchen had moved to Johnston Co, NC where he was listed on that census (I don't have it yet).

Jeremiah Grant was born ca 1817/18 in Wayne Co, NC, presumably in New Hope District. Jeremiah married Winniford --- ca 1840. They were listed on the 1840 census with no children, probably indicating they had just recently married. They were in New Hope district, listed between Dawson Smith and Casandra Faircloth.
