I (Marty Grant) am not related to the John Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.
John Grant was born ca 1800/01, presumably in Wayne Co, NC. He was listed on the 1850 census next door to Martin Johnston and his wife Charity Grant Johnston. Charity was a daughter of Ephraim Grant. Next to the Johnston's were William Grant (son of Daniel Grant) and his wife Smithy Grant Grant (daughter of Ephraim Grant). Daniel Grant was born in 1800, so he and John could easily be brothers.
John Grant's wife was named Lisha ---. She was born ca 1827/28 per the 1850 census. They had no children listed in 1850. Two John Grant's this same age were listed on the 1830 census in Wayne Co, NC. Both had children listed, and a wife that was older than Lisha (unless her 1850 age is wrong). I don't know which of these two listings (if either) are for the John Grant under study here:
1830 census analysis (based on available evidence):

1830 Wayne County, NC pg 535 John Grant 1000100000000-1000100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1800-1810) John GRANT 1 Male(s) 0-4 (1825-1830) Wife? 1 Female(s) 20-29 (1800-1810) Daughter? 1 Female(s) 0-4 (1825-1830) Daughter?
The 1830 census alphabetized the listings, but each district was separate and alpha within itself, so we can't tell who the exact neighbors were, we can tell who lived in the same general area. Using this, the John Grant listed on page 523 above was probably in Indian Springs District, based on two of my known ancestors listed nearby in the same list (Captain Reason's District). The John Grant on page 535 was in Killingsworth District. Based on some of the others in that list, this would seem to be the same John Grant found in Waynesboro District in 1840, and not the John Grant under study here. That would make the John on page 523 the more likely one. But that may not be him either, but another John Grant instead.
The 1840 census shows this John Grant (wife Lisha) listed on page 208 just a few houses from Daniel Grant and the others who were also his neighbors in 1850. This is clearly the same John Grant under study here:
1840 census analysis (based on available evidence):
1840 Wayne County, NC pg 208 John Grant 0000010000000-0001000000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 30-39 (1800-1810) John GRANT (1800/01) 1 Female(s) 15-19 (1820-1825) Lisha --- Grant (1827/28) wife
Based on the lack of children here in 1840, that makes me wonder if the John Grant on page 523 in 1830 is the same one. If so, then his wife and three daughters were all gone by 1840. The daughters could have married between 1830 and 1840.
On the 1850 census, John Grant and Lisha were in the district North of the Neuse River living in close proximity to the Daniel Grant and Ephraim Grant families. John and Lisha had Rufus and Thomas Mozingo residing with them in 1850. These two were illegitimate sons of Winney Mozingo, Thomas Mozingo was allegedly a son of Thomas Grant. Thomas Grant isn't quite old enough to be John Grant's father, but he could easily be his older brother. If true, that would make the Mozingo children nephews of John Grant. The fact that they are residing with him implies a relationship, even though they could just be hired laborers. Thomas and Mark Mozingo (living with Winny in 1850) were both age 21 in 1850, and may have been twins. The information on the Mozingo's being children of Thomas Grant was given to me by Gail Licari. She mentioned court records proving it, but I haven't tried to locate them yet.
(Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age)

John Grant died by February 1851 for his widow Lisha Grant petitioned the court for 1 years maintenance from his estate. His Estate record (Wayne Co, NC Loose Estates at the NC Archives) don't give very much information. No children are mentioned.
I didn't find Lisha Grant listed on the 1860 census in Wayne Co, NC. She probably remarried before 1860. There was an Elizabeth Grant age 30 (born ca 1830) listed on the 1860 census in New Hope District. This could be Lisha, but it doesn't fit real well.
