Jeremiah Grant was born ca 1813/14 per his age on the 1850 census (36). Someone gave me a birth date of 15 Apr 1815 for him, but I don't know the source. The 1850 census listed his birth place as South Carolina. I would guess he was born in Marlboro District.

I don't know who his parents were. There were a couple of Grants in the area who qualify. Census analysis helps narrow it down a bit, but doesn't really prove who they were.

Jeremiah would have been about 5 or 6 for the 1820 census. He should be in the under 10 age group (born ca 1810/20). There were no Grants in Richmond Co., NC in 1820, but there were two in neighboring Marlboro Dist., SC: Richard S. Grant (1780/84) and Malachi Grant (c1790). Malachi had two boys under 10 with him on this census, Richard didn't, but there were other problems with his 1820 entry so it isn't reliable.

By the 1830 census Jeremiah would have been about 15 or 16 years old. There were three Grant households in Marlboro: Richard S. Grant (1780/84), Malachi Grant (c1790) and William Grant (c1775). William had no one Jeremiah's age or close. Richard had one son aged 10-14 (c1815/20) which is close, and Malachi had one that age and one aged 15-19 (c1810/15). The only Grant in Richmond in 1830 was Daniel Grant (1800/10) and he was living by himself. It is notable that Jeremiah named one of his sons Daniel. Perhaps the older Daniel was Jeremiah's brother or uncle.

Jeremiah Grant married Anna Jane (---) sometime in the 1830's probably in Marlboro Dist., SC or possibly in Richmond Co., NC. She was born ca 1819/20 per the 1850 census, which also shows her born in NC. I don't know her maiden name. Regarding her given names she was listed as "Jane" in 1850 and "Ann J." in 1860. I'm not entirely certain both are the same woman, but they probably are.

They are on the 1840 census in Richmond Co., NC. He was next to Malachi Grant (c1790) who could be his father or uncle at least. His entire household was listed in the "Free Colored" columns.

I found an entry on the 1870 census in Marlboro for Jeremiah Grant. The rest of the family doesn't match up with what we know about them. Is this the same person? There are numerous problems with the 1870 census so this may just be another example of pretty poor work by the census takers that year. Here is the entry anyway, but keep in mind it could be totally wrong, or perhaps an entirely different family.

Children of Jeremiah Grant and Anna Jane (---). The 1850 through 1880 census records shows 11 children. The 1870 census entry is highly suspect, so I'm not including any of the children listed there.
