I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I am related to Mary Grant, but I suspect she is part of my family.
Mary Grant was born ca 1832/33 (per 1860 census) in North Carolina, county unknown.
I don't know if Mary was born a Grant, and had several children out of wedlock, or if she was married to some Mr. Grant who died, leaving her a widow. I suspect that she was a widow, but I could be wrong. Assuming she was a widow, I don't know what her maiden name was. I have a suspicion that she was a Hollingsworth, but that is supposition based on her living next door to Jeremiah and Elizabeth Hollingsworth in 1860, and that they did have a daughter named "Mary" with them back in 1850 who was the same age as this Mary. The facts all fit to support my supposition, but I don't have any direct proof to show that I'm right. Jeremiah and Elizabeth had a daughter named Mary Hollingsworth who was age 18 in 1850 (born ca 1831/32). In 1860, she was no longer with them, so presumably married or dead by then. Mary Grant, age 27 (born ca 1832/33), an apparent widow, was next door to them. There was another Grant-Hollingsworth marriage in the 1850's, so the two families were obviously acquainted.
Mary Hollingsworth (assuming that was her name) married a Mr. Grant between 1850 and ca 1851, presumably in Henderson County. It stands to reason that she married a son of Andrew Grant and Sarah Decker, as they were the only Grants in Henderson County at the time. All of their sons are accounted for except for John Grant, born ca 1828/29, who was with them in 1850, but not found in 1860 or later. He is therefore the prime suspect for husband of Mary Hollingsworth.
Mr. Grant (perhaps John Grant) apparently died between ca 1858 and 1860, for he was not with Mary on the 1860 census.
Widow Mary Grant was listed in Henderson County on the 1860 census, next door to Jeremiah and Elizabeth Hollingsworth (her possible parents). No townships were listed, but she was listed at Edneyville Post Office, so probably not too far from Edneyville. William C. Grant (1824) was also in Edneyville, but not listed close by.

I was unable to locate the family on the 1870 census, though I found daughter Harriett in neighboring Buncombe County with her new husband John G. Haney. Other than Harriett, I didn't find any of Mary's children in 1870 or later census records.
Mary Grant and husband (John Grant?) had 4 children per the 1860 census.
Harriet E. Grant was born ca 1850/51 in Henderson County. She was home with her mother in 1860.
Harriett had a child out of wedlock in June 1869. I don't know who the father was, but she married just a few months later, perhaps her husband was the father, but the child retained the Grant surname, so it seems likely he would have changed his name if his father married his mother.
On 24 Dec 1869, Harriet E. Grant married John G. Haney in neighboring Buncombe County. John was born ca 1852/53 in Buncombe County, in the Leceister area, son of James Haney and Caroline (---) Haney.
They were listed on the 1870 census in Buncombe County next door to John's parents.

They were still in Leicester Township in 1880, and just two houses from John's parents. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
I didn't find them on the 1900 census in Buncombe County. I did find them (I think) in Macon County, just twenty houses from Harriett's son Thomas Leander Jeremiah Grant. I think this is them, but the wife's name was written over, so it was hard to make out, but it seems to say "Hattie" (which is short for "Harriett"). The ages for John and wife are a perfect match, so it seems very reasonable that they are one and the same family. There were other Haneys in Macon County, all probably related.

Margaret Grant was born ca 1852/53 in Henderson County. She was home with hers mother in 1860. I didn't find her in 1870.
Thomas Grant was born ca 1855/56 in Henderson County. He was home with his mother in 1860. I didn't find him in 1870.
Sarah Grant was born ca 1857/58 in Henderson County. She was home with her mother in 1860. I didn't find her in 1870, nor did I find any marriage records that might have been her in Henderson nor Buncombe County.
