A note about sources

I (Marty Grant) am not related to the Stafford Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.

Stafford Grant was born ca 1810/20, presumably in Wayne Co, NC, though it may have been in Duplin Co, NC instead. I don't know who his parents were, nor do I have any strong leads.

Stafford was not listed on the 1830 census. The only Grant family in Duplin in 1830 was Hezekiah Grant and he did have two male children age 10-14 (born ca 1815/20) which fits Stafford pretty well. I don't know if this is Stafford's father or not, but it is certainly a possibility. Lewis Grant listed in 1830 Greene Co, NC had four children in the 1810-1820 age grouping, two 1810-15, and two 1815-20. Since Stafford's oldest son was "John Lewis Grant", that could make Lewis Grant a suspect for Stafford's father. Lewis was originally from Wayne Co, NC (New Hope district). Elisha Grant of Duplin and Lenoir Co, NC and later of KY and MO had 1 male 1810-15 and 1 male 1815-20 with him in 1830 Lenoir Co, NC census. He didn't have anyone that age with him in 1820 though.

Jesse Grant of Wayne Co, NC had a son Stafford's age who has yet to be identified. In 1820 that son was under 10 (born 1810-20), and in 1830 he was 10-14 (born 1815-20). He was not with Jesse in 1840, so that fits rather nicely. I don't know if Jesse is the one though.

The only good choices for Stafford's father (in my opinion) is Jesse Grant or Lewis Grant. I can't be sure if either of them is his father though.

Stafford Grant married Elizabeth "Betsy" --- ca 1830, probably in Duplin Co, NC, as she was born there. No record was found of the marriage though. I don't know what her maiden name might have been.

In 1840 Stafford Grant was listed in Duplin Co, NC on page 144. There was an older woman age 60-69 (born 1770/80) living with him. This could be his mother, or his wife's mother. There is no way to be sure. The 1840 Duplin Co, NC census did not list districts, but based on some of his neighbors, I'd say he was clearly in northern Duplin county, probably close to the Wayne Co, NC line at Mount Olive or Calypso. Two of Stafford's 1840 neighbors (Anna Blizzard and Asa Hall) were both in the Northern Division on page 32 in Duplin Co, NC in 1850, and other former neighbors as well were on that page or the page before. I can't pin down their location any better than that.

Stafford died in the 1840's either in Duplin or Wayne Co, NC. Betsy was listed on the 1850 census in Wayne Co, NC in the district South of the Neuse River. She was in the household of Ben Blackwell and his wife Phebe. I don't know how they are related, or if they are. Perhaps Betsy and Ben are siblings, making her maiden name Blackwell. More research is needed on that point.

The children of Stafford and Elizabeth "Betsy" Grant are mostly proven by the 1850 and 1860 census.

John Lewis Grant was born 6 Jun 1831 in Duplin Co, NC (data per John T. Grant, a descendant). John married Sarah Herring Winkfield on 12 Mar 1853 in Duplin Co, NC. I'm not sure if her maiden name was Herring or Winkfield. I didn't find anyone named Winkfield in the 1850 census in eastern NC. John and Sarah were listed on the 1860 census in Duplin Co, NC North Division, with his mother Elizabeth residing with them. There is also a John Grant age 18 with them, I don't know who he is. This came from a published abstract, perhaps that is actually Jackson or George Grant, both of whom are missing in 1860.

Stafford Grant was born ca 1834/35 in Duplin Co, NC. Most of the information I have on his family comes from Wayne Roberts, a descendant. Stafford married Margaret Catherine Dobson on 8 Jun 1868 in Duplin Co, NC. Stafford was at home with his mother in 1850, but in 1860 he was with the Barfield family in northern Duplin Co, NC.

Jackson Grant was born 1836/37 in Duplin Co, NC. He was home with his family in 1850 Wayne Co, NC census, but I have no record of him after that.

George W. Grant was born 1839/40 in Duplin Co, NC. He was home with his family in 1850 Wayne Co, NC census, but I have no record of him after that.
