William Grant was born ca 1800/10 per his age on the 1830
census (20-29). I don't know where he was born, though NC or SC seem
likely places, though he could have been born elsewhere. He may be a son of John Grant (c1780) and Penelope (---) who he was listed very near in 1830. I have no proof that William is their son, but he could be. William is listed on the 1830 census in Brunswick Co., NC a few houses from John Grant his possible father. They are the only Grants in Brunswick at the time. William's house contains both white and free colored persons. It isn't clear which of them is William himself as they are all male and of age to be head of household. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Brunswick Co., NC page 327 William Grant 0000100000000-0000000000000 FPC=020000-000000 Analysis: 1 White Male 20-29 (1800/1810) William Grant (1800/10) 2 Free Colored males 10-23 (1806/1820) 1-Unknown 2-Unknown I didn't find William Grant on the 1840 census in Brunswick. By then John Grant had moved to Richmond Co., NC, but I didn't find William there that year or nearby. There is a William Grant (c1812) who was in New Hanover Co., NC in 1850 and 1860. That is next door to Brunswick so this could be the same person as the man listed in Brunswick in 1830. The age doesn't fit exactly, but it is close. |
Children of William Grant. The 1830 census doesn't show an apparent wife or children. If he had kids it was after 1830. |
