John Grant was born ca 1779/80 per his age on the 1850
census (70). He was born in South Carolina (per 1850 census). I
don't know what county, but probably somewhere in eastern South
Carolina. I don't know who John's parents were. It is tempting to think that he is closely related to Malachi Grant (c1790) since they were neighbors in Richmond Co., NC. They could be brothers, cousins or perhaps not related at all. Malachi spent his youth and much of his adult life in neighboring Marlboro Dist., SC, whereas John spent his earlier years (as much as is known) in Brunswick Co., NC which isn't exactly next door to Marlboro and Richmond. That doesn't preclude them being related though. John Grant was listed as "free colored" on the 1810, 1830 and 1840 census and was listed with a race of "M" for Mulatto on the 1850 census. This can be interpreted to mean he was white with black ancestry, or that he was white with Native American (Indian) ancestry. There could be other explanations as well, but regardless of his actual ethnic origin the census takers thought he wasn't "pure white" so he listed him in the non white category. It is impossible to determine what his ethnic ancestry was from census records alone. DNA testing of his descendants would probably help sort it out a little bit. John would have been about 10 years old by the time of the 1790 census, assuming he was actually born yet. There were no Grants at all in either Brunswick, Richmond or Marlboro on that census. In 1800 John would have been about 20. He wasn't listed on the census as a head of household in NC or SC as far as I could find. He was probably still with his parents then. There were no Grants in Brunswick or Richmond Co., NC in 1800. John Grant married Penelope (---) sometime before 1810, probably in Brunswick Co., NC. She was born ca 1789/90 somewhere in North Carolina (both per 1850 census). I don't know her maiden name. Once upon a time I thought that she was Penelope Eure who married a John Grant in 1820 in Hertford Co., NC, but it is obvious now that they are not the same people. John is listed on the 1810 census in Brunswick Co., NC. His household consisted of four "free colored" persons and no whites. He was the only Grant in Brunswick in 1810. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Brunswick Co., NC page 234 J. Grant 00000-00000-4-0 Analysis: 4 Free Colored Persons 1-John Grant (c1780) 2-Penelope (---) Grant (c1790) wife 3-Child? 4-Child? I wasn't able to find John on the 1820 census. Im guessing that he was still in Brunswick in 1820 but missed for some reason or another. It is notable that most of the other free colored families of Brunswick County (as listed in 1830) were not listed there in 1820 either. The census taker just left them off for some reason. If they were Indian or claimed to be he may have left them off for that reason for the instructions clearly stated not to include Indians. On the other hand perhaps they were just missed for some other reason. I should note that a John Grant is listed in 1820 in Hertford Co., NC (that is the same year that a John Grant married a Penelope Eure there). I'm pretty sure that is not this same John and Penelope despite the similarities. I could be wrong. They are "back" in Brunswick for the 1830 census. William Grant, a possible son, was listed nearby on the same page. Most of the families listed near the two Grant households were also Free Colored persons. Johns next door neighbors were Andrew Nealey and Jesse Freeman, both listed as free colored. Other neighbors included several Chavis and Jacobs families. I mention all of them because many of those same people went to Richmond Co., NC later when the Grants did. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Brunswick Co., NC page 327 John Grant 0000000000000-0000000000000 FPC=110100-410100 Slaves=000000-000000 Analysis: 1 Male 36-54 (1774/1793) John Grant (c1780) 1 male 10-23 (1806/1820) Son? 1 male 0-9 (1820/1830) David Jackson Grant (c1827) son 1 Female 36-54 (1774/1793) Penelope (---) Grant (c1790) wife 1 female 10-23 (1806/1820) Daughter? 4 females 0-9 (1820/1830) 1-Daughter? 2-Daughter? 3-Daughter? 4-Daughter? They had moved a few counties away to Richmond Co., NC by the time of the 1840 census. Other Grants were there in 1840 as well: John W. Grant, Jeremiah Grant and Malachi Grant, though they weren't near John Sr. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Richmond Co., NC page 248 John Grant Sen 0000000000000-0000000000000 FPC=010010-110100 Slaves=000000-000000 Analysis: 1 Male 55-99 (1740/1784) John Grant (c1780) 1 male 10-23 (1816/1830) David Jackson Grant (c1827) son 1 Female 36-54 (1784/1803) Penelope (---) Grant (c1790) wife 1 female 10-23 (1816/1830) Daughter? 1 female 0-9 (1830/1840) Daughter? They were still in Richmond for the 1850 census. They were just a few households from Malachi Grant (c1790), relationship unknown. The entire family was listed with a race of "M" for Mulatto. William Chavis and John Chavis were Johns neighbors, the same men being his neighbors back in 1830 in Brunswick County. There were also Jacobs and Freemans nearby, same as in 1830 Brunswick. Looks like many of the same families made the move together. They could be all related. All were listed as "Mulatto" on this census.
I wasn't able to find John or Penelope on the 1860 census in Richmond, nor in neighboring Marlboro Dist., SC or elsewhere. They may have both died in the 1850's. Their son David Jackson Grant was still in Richmond in 1860. |

Children of John Grant and Penelope
(---).
The 1810 through 1850 census records show several children. Only one
(David Jackson) is identified since he was still home in 1850.
