John W. Grant was born ca 1809/10 per his age on the 1850 census (40). The 1850 census listed his birth place as South Carolina. I would guess he was born in Marlboro District or nearby.

I don't know who his parents were. There were a couple of Grants in the area who qualify. Census analysis helps narrow it down a bit, but doesn't really prove who they were.

John would have been about 10 for the 1820 census. He should be in the under 10 age group (born ca 1810/20) or aged 10-15 (c1804/10). There were no Grants in Richmond Co., NC in 1820, but there were two in neighboring Marlboro Dist., SC: Richard S. Grant (1780/84) and Malachi Grant (c1790). Malachi had two boys under 10 with him on this census, Richard didn't, but there were other problems with his 1820 entry so it isn't reliable.

By the 1830 census John would have been about 20 years old. There were three Grant households in Marlboro: Richard S. Grant (1780/84), Malachi Grant (c1790) and William Grant (c1775). William had no one John's age or close. Richard had one son aged 20-29 (c1800/10) which is a good match, and Malachi had one aged 15-19 (c1810/15) which is close. The only Grant in Richmond in 1830 was Daniel Grant (1800/10) and he was living by himself.

John W. Grant married Margaret (---) sometime in the 1830's before ca 1832, probably in Marlboro Dist., SC or possibly in Richmond Co., NC. She was born ca 1814/15 per the 1850 census, which also shows her born in SC. I don't know her maiden name.

They are on the 1840 census in Richmond Co., NC. He was just a few houses from Malachi Grant (c1790) who could be related, and also near Jeremiah Grant (c1814). His entire household was listed in the "Free Colored" columns.

They were in neighboring Chesterfield Dist., SC for the 1860 census. It looks like John's wife Margaret died in the 1850's and he married Martha H. (---) during the 1850's.
