I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin 5 times removed of William H. Grant.

William H. Grant was born ca 1832/33 (per 1850 and 1860 census) in Macon Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census), presumably on or near Mill Creek (or "Millers Creek").

He is a son of Charles B. Grant and Mary Morris, and was with them on the 1850 census.

William may have been named for his uncle William Morris (1792). I don't know what his middle initial of "H" is for. Could be "Harrison" or "Henry" or just about anything.

William was probably home with his parents for the 1840 census, probably the male child age 5-9 (born ca 1830/35).

William was home with his parents in 1850 ("William" age 17, born Macon).

On 26 Aug 1854 W. H. Grant witnessed a deed from his Aunt Mary (Miller) Grant (widow of Thomas B. Grant) to his brother James M. Grant.  (Macon Co, NC Deed Book G page 529).

On 6 May 1858 William H. Grant obtained a marriage bond in Macon Co, NC to marry Elizabeth J. Gibson. His brother George Grant was the bondsman. William and Elizabeth were married on 11 May 1858 by Samuel Gibson, Minister. Elizabeth Jane Gibson was born 9 Jun 1840 (source?) in Macon County, North Carolina, daughter of John Stewart Gibson and Martha Ann Carroll (parents proven by her death certificate and by her living with them on 1850 census).

William and Elizabeth were listed in Macon Co, NC on the 1860 census. They were in Welch's district.

Between 1865 and ca 1868, William and family moved to nearby Monroe Co, TN.

They were listed on the 1870 census in Monroe Co, TN. William's widowed mother Mary was living with them.

William H. Grant died in Sweetwater, TN (Monroe Co) on 1 Jul 1875 per an Article in one of the Heritage books. I'll have to look that up again to provide the proper citation.

Sometime after William's death, but before 1880, Elizabeth and the children moved back to Macon Co, NC.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Macon in Cowee Township. Elizabeth Gibson Grant's step-grandmother Charity White Gibson was residing with her. Elizabeth's father was John Stewart Gibson (1819-1886) and his father was Samuel B. Gibson (1796-1878). Samuel's 2nd wife was Charity White whom he married in Macon Co, NC on 18 Dec 1866.

Elizabeth was listed in Monroe Co, TN on the 1900 census with her son Charles Grant. ** I don't have the listing yet, so can't present it here.

In 1910, Elizabeth was back in Macon Co, NC once again, listed in Franklin Township, residing with her son Samuel Grant. Funny thing, she was listed as a "boarder", and not as Samuel's mother!

Elizabeth Jane Gibson Grant died on 25 Jan 1938 in Franklin Township of Macon Co, NC. Her death certificate lists her as "Betsy Jane Grant", and shows her father as "John Stewart Gibson" and her mother as "Martha Carroll". (Macon Co, NC Death Records Book 17 page 45).

I don't know where Elizabeth Jane Gibson Grant is buried.

Children

William H. Grant and Elizabeth Jane Gibson Grant's children are mostly proven by the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census. They had 6 children, according to Elizabeth's 1910 census entry, but only 5 are known. The other one probably died young.

Charles T. Grant (1860)

Eliza Ann Grant (1862)

John S. Grant (1865)

Samuel Edward Grant (1868)

Margaret Caroline "Callie" Grant (c1872)

Charles T. Grant was born Feb 1860 in Macon Co, NC. He was home with his parents in 1860 ("Charles T." age 6 months, born Macon), and home with them in 1870 ("Charlie" age 9, born NC) and home with his widowed mother in 1880 ("Charley T." age 20, born NC).

It seems likely that Charles was named for his grandfather Charles Grant. I'm not sure what his "T" middle initial may stand for.

Charles T. Grant married Nancy Ann Shephard on 18 Sep 1881 in Macon Co, NC. Their marriage record gave him as "Charles T. Grant" age 21, and her as "Anna Shepherd" age 18, and they were married by M. J. Mashburn, Justice of the Peace. Nancy was born ca 1861/62. I don't know who her parents are.

By 1895 Charles and his family moved to Monroe Co, TN and was listed there on the 1900 census. ** I don't have their census entry yet.

Thanks to Gene Brakebill for much of the data I have on descendants of Charles T. Grant.

Eliza Ann Grant was born 19 Apr 1862 (per tombstone) in Macon Co, NC. She was home with her parents in 1870 ("Annie" age 7) and with her widowed mother in 1880 ("Eliza A." age 18).

Eliza Ann Grant married Barnett J. Hurst on 20 Jan 1881 in Macon Co, NC. Their marriage record gave her age as 18, and his name as B. J. Hurst, aged 19. They were married by M. J. Mashburn, Justice of the Peace.  Barnett J. Hurst was born 17 Jan 1859 (per tombstone) in Macon County, son of Joseph Bernard Hurst and Margaret L. Raby.

Barnett J. Hurst died 1 Aug 1889 in Macon Co, NC, and is buried at Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery in Macon County.

Sometime after that, Eliza married Joseph Henry Hurst. probably circa 1892/93 (no record found). Joseph was a cousin to her first husband, I suppose. He was born 20 Mar 1867, son of Joseph Hurst and Martha Dalton.

I did not find Joseph and Eliza on the 1900 census in Macon County.

They were in Macon for the 1910 census in Cowee Township.

Eliza Ann Grant Hurst Hurst died 9 Aug 1925 in Macon Co, NC. She is buried at the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery in Macon Co, NC.

Joseph Henry Hurst died on 12 Jul 1943, and is buried at Liberty also.

John S. Grant was born 23 May 1865 (per tombstone) in Macon Co, NC. He was home with his parents in 1870 ("John" age 4), and home in 1880 ("John B." age 16).

John S. Grant married Carrie Ann Hurst on 27 Dec 1885 in Macon Co, NC. They were both listed as age 21 on the marriage record. They were married by John Elmore, Justice of the Peace. Carrie was born 12 Jun 1864 (per tombstone), daughter of Joseph Bernard Hurst and Margaret L. Raby, making her a sister to Barnett J. Hurst who had married Eliza Ann Grant.

John S. Grant died 10 Sep 1888 and Carrie just two weeks later on 26 Sep 1888. They are both buried at Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery in Macon Co, NC. Joseph C. Gibson was appointed administrator of their estate. Their estate records show two "infant" (under 21) heirs: "Lelah Grant" and "John Franklin Grant".

Their estate record (combined as one) lists their siblings also, and John's mother: E. J. Grant (John's mother); Sam E. Grant (John's brother), W. T. Hurst, J. C. Hurst, and B. J. Hurst, (siblings of Carrie Hurst Grant.)

John and Carrie's daughter Lelia Etta Grant (c1886-1941) was listed in the estate records as "Lelah Grant". I did not find her on the 1900 census, but she married on 23 Jul 1905 (in Macon) to Jesse C. Patterson, son of Jerry Monroe Patterson and Julia A. Kerr. I didn't find them on the 1910 census in Macon County.

John and Carrie's son John Franklin Grant (1887) was listed in the estate records as "John Franklin Grant". Frank was listed on the 1900 census with the Joseph Gibson family (probably a cousin).

On 1 Sep 1907, Frank Grant married Jennie Tallent in Macon County. She was born ca 1888/89 per her age on the marriage record. I don't know who her parents are.

I did not find them on the 1910 census in Macon County.

Samuel Edward Grant was born 30 Apr 1868 (per Dennis Grant) in Monroe Co, TN. He was home with his parents in 1870 ("Sam" age 3) and with his widowed mother in 1880 ("Samuel E." age 14).

Samuel married Mary Raby sometime after 1880, but before ca 1898. I have not found a marriage record for them, nor any additional about her such as birth date, parents, etc. Mary was killed in a Horse and Carriage accident (I don't have the date for that). It does not appear that Samuel and Mary had any children together.

Samuel E. Grant married Callie D. Bradley 23 Nov 1898 in Jackson Co, NC. The record gave his age as 30, and her as 21, and that they married at "Mrs. Bradleys", presumably Callie's widowed mother. Callie was born 13 May 1877 (per Dennis Grant) in Jackson County, North Carolina, daughter of Harrison Bradley and Angeline Bryson. (Angeline is undoubtedly part of my Bryson family.)

Samuel and Callie were listed on the 1900 census in Jackson Co, NC (where Callie was from) in Webster Township.

According to Dennis Grant, a descendant, Samuel Grant was Chief of Police in Franklin in 1919.

They were still in Macon for the 1920 census. They were next door to Samuel's widowed mother, living with his sister Eliza Hurst.

Thanks to Dennis Grant for much of the data I have on Samuel's descendants.
