I (Marty Grant) am not related to Edmund Hensley as far as I know.
Edmund Hensley was born ca 1770/80 (per 1830 census) or ca 1780/90 (per 1840 census). These can be reconciled if he was born ca 1780. I don't know where he was born, though he lived in the part of Tennessee heavily populated with Hensleys from Washington Co, VA and also from Western North Carolina (Buncombe and Yancey Counties). It seems likely he is related to one or both of these groups. I have no clue where Edmund was born. Odds are high he was born in Virginia or North Carolina.
I know very little about Edmund. He is found on an 1809 tax list, and on the 1830 and 1840 census in Tennessee, and, frankly those are the only records I have on him so far. The 1809 record (Hawkins County) puts him in proximity (and possible relationship) to Temple Hensley (1760/70) and Trent Hensley (1770/80). Their ages are all compatible to be brothers, but that is just speculation.
I don't know who Edmund's parents were. I have no strong (or weak) clues for any possible parents. The 1830 census shows a woman age 80-89 (born ca 1740/50) residing with Edmund. This could be his widowed mother, or it could be his mother-in-law. However, it is a clue at least.
Edmund would have probably been home with his parents for the 1790 and 1800 census, but assuming he was in Tennessee then, those records are lost.
Edmund Hensley married someone (name unknown), though I have no clue when he might have married (certainly well before 1830). His wife was born ca 1770/80 (per the 1830 census). I don't know where they married either, though it could be Hawkins County, Tennessee.
Edmund Hensley was listed on the 1809 tax list for Hawkins County, Tennessee.
The 1810 census is lost for Tennessee, but presumably, he would have still been in Hawkins County that year.
The 1820 census is lost for eastern Tennessee, so I don't know if Edmund was still in Hawkins that year or not.
By 1830, Edmund Hensley had moved southwest to Roane County, Tennessee and was listed on the census there that year. There was only one other Hensley in the county, and he was not listed nearby (Benjamin Hensley-c1797). Edmund's neighbors were James Hinds and Edmund Tredway. The census description said he was in the district "North of the Tennessee River".
1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)
1830 Roane Co, TN pg 40 Edmund Hensley 0000000100000-0000000100100 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 50-59 (1770-1780) Edmund HENSLEY (1770/80) s/o ? 1 Female(s) 80-89 (1740-1750) Mother? Mother-in-law? (1740/50) -> gone by 1840 1 Female(s) 50-59 (1770-1780) Wife? (1770/80) --> gone by 1840
Apparently both Mrs. Hensley (Edmund's wife) and his mother (or mother-in-law) died in the 1830-40 timeframe, for in 1840 he was living alone.
He was still in Roane County for the 1840 census and living alone. He was not listed near the other Hensleys in the county that year. He was listed ad "Edwin" this year, and so was his neighbor "Edwin Treadway" (same neighbor from 1830).
1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)
1840 Roane Co, TN pg 77 Edwin Hensley 0000000100000-0000000000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 50-59 (1780-1790) Edmund HENSLEY (1770/80) s/o ?
I did not find Edmund Hensley on the 1850 census in Roane County, Tennessee, nor elsewhere.
If Edmund had any children, they were all gone from home before 1830, so based only on census records, I can't identify any of them.
