George W. Hensley was born ca 1800/01 per the 1860 census (age
59), and the 1870 census (69), and his 1862 marriage record (61). His
1850 census entry is just slightly off from the above (50), and his
1840 entry is way off (age 50-59, born ca 1780/90). He was born in North Carolina according to the 1860 census, though his 1850 and 1870 census entries both list his birth place as Virginia. His 1862 marriage record lists his birth place as "Burk Co., N.C." I was told long ago that the marriage record for George's 1862 marriage lists his parents as "Colbert & Eliza Hensley." However, I have seen that record and it doesn't list his parents, at least not the version that I found. Perhaps there is more than one marriage record, or perhaps part of it is missing from the copy I saw online at the West Virginia Department of Cultural Resources. Other marriage registers in West Virginia during that era typically stretch across two pages, with the date, names of the parties, ages, birth places and residences on the first page, and the parents names and minister name on the second page. The Upshur County marriage register that is online is only one page at a time, perhaps the second page wasn't scanned, or has become lost or separated from the first part. If someone reading this has access to the originals I'd appreciate knowing if the second page is included with the parents names for George Hensley's 16 Jun 1862 marriage. Is George a son of Colbert Hensley and Elizabeth Stanton? He certainly could be, but what is the proof? His marriage record would be excellent proof if I could just confirm it. One problem with this is that Colbert Hensley was in Buncombe Co., NC at the time that George was supposedly born in Burke. This isn't a major problem for the two counties border each other. Despite the problem with the marriage register, I think Colbert is probably indeed George's father, though I can't really prove it at present. Census analysis helps a little, but isn't conclusive. George would have been about 9 years old by the time of the 1810 census. There were a few dozen Hensleys in North Carolina on that census, most of whom had at least one apparent son aged under 10 (born ca 1800/10). Narrowing it down to just Burke and Buncombe Counties there are still quite a few potential matches. Colbert Hensley is listed in Buncombe and he has 3 boys at home in that age group, one of whom is probably George, the other two being Amos (c1804) and Hickman (c1804). This fits well for George, but as noted there are quite a few others in Buncombe and Burke that have sons that age also. By the 1820 census George would have been about 19 years old. He would be in the age 16-25 age group (born ca 1794/1804). Unfortunately Colbert Hensley is missing from the 1820 census. He may have simply been missed, or perhaps he moved into eastern Tennessee for awhile, and the 1820 census is lost for all of eastern Tennessee. George W. Hensley married Harriet A. Gaither sometime before 1822, probably in Virginia somewhere. She was born 12 Aug 1796 (per her tombstone) in Virginia (per 1850 census) or Maryland per the 1860 census. I think Maryland is correct. Her maiden name was listed as "Gaitor" on the death certificate of her son Enoch Hensley. A huge question comes to mind at this point. Why did George Hensley moved from the Buncombe Co., NC area to Rockingham Co., VA and later to Augusta Co., VA? That isn't a typical migration route as it is almost due north when most folks at this time were heading west. There were no other Hensleys in that county that I've ever noticed. George's mother was a Stanton (also spelled Staunton) and her ancestors may have something to do with his move since the town of Staunton, Virginia is in Augusta. Perhaps some of his maternal relatives brought him there, though I have no confirmation of this. There could have been some other reason. Jan Hensley found records that shows George lived in Rockingham Co., VA before moving to neighboring Augusta County. There were already Hensleys in Rockingham when he got there, but if they are related it is probably distantly. He must have moved to Rockingham before ca 1822, perhaps a little earlier. Jan Hensley notes that in her many years of research she has found no connection between her Hensleys in Rockingham and the George W. Hensley family. On 1 Sep 1828 James W. Hook and Sally Hook sold land (acreage unknown) on the draft of Smiths Creek to George W. Hensley of Rockingham (crossed out and replaced by Augusta) for $225. (Rockingham Co., VA Deed Book 8, page 286 shared by Jan Hensley) I didn't find George in Rockingham or Augusta on the 1830 census. In 1833 George W. Hensley purchased property from John Carpenter. (Rockingham Co., VA Deed Book 10, page 261). * These Rockingham County deeds are from the index only as the original deeds were destroyed for the most part. The year given was when it was recorded which could be long after the actual deed was made. Thanks to Fonda Breeden and Jan Hensley for sharing this and the other Rockingham deed references. In 1834 George sold property to John Looker. (Rockingham Co., VA Deed Book 11, page 472). In 1837 George and Harriet sold their land in Rockingham to Joseph Bilhimer Jr, and this is probably when they moved to neighboring Augusta County. (Rockingham Co., VA Deed Book 12, page 287). He is listed on the 1840 census in Augusta, the only Hensley there. The enumerations for the family don't match up perfectly with George's known children, so the older ones may have been away at school at this time or just living somewhere else. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Augusta Co., VA page 53 George W. The only other Hensley listed is their son Robert with his family several pages away.

There is a problem with the 1860 census entry. An obituary and her tombstone both give Harriet's death date as 10 Oct 1859. The census was "as of" 1 Jun 1860, so why was she listed? She should have been on the mortality schedule instead of the population schedule. The Mortality Schedule would include anyone who died in the "census year" (1 Jun 1859 through 1 Jun 1860). Anyway, there she is on the census with her husband. Her obituary is recorded in the Staunton Vindicator, 1859-10-14, Page 03, On the 10th inst. at her residence in this county, Mrs. Harriet Hensley, wife of Geo. W. Hensley Sr., in the 64th year of her age. (Thanks to Jan Hensley for sharing this.) Harriet is buried at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery. Her stone says Harriet Ann Gaither 12 Aug 1796 - 10 Oct 1859. George W. Hensley went to Upshur Co., VA (now WV) to remarry in 1862. His son Enoch had lived there a few years earlier (while it was still part of Lewis County), but he had already moved to Wood Co., VA (now WV) by this time, so I'm not sure why George went there. Perhaps he already knew the bride from elsewhere. On 16 Jun 1862 George W. Hensley, widow, age 61, born Burk County, NC (sic), married Martha A. Mills, widow, 48, born Albemarle Co., VA in Upshur Co., VA (now WV). The "missing" page of the register supposedly gave his parents names as "Colbert & Eliza Hensley" and hers as "Wm & Mary Hays." Martha Hays was born ca 1819/20 (per age on 1850 census) in Albemarle Co., VA (per marriage record), daughter of William and Mary Hays (also per marriage record, though not listed on the version I've seen). She was previously married to a Mr. Mills who died before 1862 since her surname was Mills on her marriage record and she was listed as a widow. I found Western R. Mills (c1786) on the 1860 census in Upshur with wife Martha age 45. He died on 25 Aug 1861 in Upshur, wife Martha A. was the informant. This all fits to be the same Martha that George Hensley married just a year later in this county. Western Mills was on the 1850 census in Randolph Co., VA (now WV), apparently unmarried (or widowed), living with George W. Mills, relationship unknown, perhaps his brother. George Hensley and Martha seemed to have moved back to Augusta Co., VA after the marriage, and were listed there on the 1870 census.
George W. Hensley made his Will on 21 May 1868 in Augusta County. In it he named Adam Long who lived with him (no relationship stated), wife Martha A., and "my lawful heirs" not mentioned by name. He named wife Martha A. Hensley and Robert D. Hensley (his son, but not stated as such) as his Executors. It was signed G. W. Hensley and witnessed by Cyrus F. Balsley and John D. Balsley. (Augusta Co., VA Will Book 45, pp 486-487) The Will is two pages, images shared by Jan Hensley: George W. Hensley died on 20 Sep 1874 in Augusta Co., VA. His death record (which I haven't seen) gave the date of death, and may also list his parents, but I haven't seen it. He is buried at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery. His stone says George W. Hensley d. 20 Sep 1874 age 78 years, 6 months. That age doesn't quite match his census records. Martha is listed by herself on the 1880 census in Augusta.

Robert D. Hensley was born ca 1827/28 (per
age on 1850 census) or Sep 1825, presumably in Rockingham Co., VA.
He may be home with his parents in 1840 aged 10-14 (born 1825/30), but that could be his younger brother John instead. There isn't room for both of them. That is either a census error or perhaps Robert was elsewhere at the time. On 16 Aug 1847 Robert D. Hensley married Sarah C. Long in neighboring Rockingham Co., VA. She was born 22 Dec 1823 (per tombstone), parents unknown. She was probably from Rockingham since they married there. Her middle initial is given as "C" on most records, but "K" on others, suggesting her middle name was probably Catherine (a.k.a. Katherine). They were back in Augusta for the 1850 census, a few pages from his parents.
They are still in Augusta for the 1860 census. Robert's parents are with him. They are spelled clearly as "Hemsley" on this record, but obviously the same family.

John G. Hensley was born ca 1828/29 (per age
on 1850 census) in Rockingham Co., VA.
He may be with his parents in 1840 aged 10-14 (1825/30) or that could be his brother Robert (c1828) instead. No way to know which it is for certain. John was home with his parents in 1850 ("Jno. G." age 21). John G. Hensley married Elizabeth F. (---) between 1850 and ca 1856, presumably in Augusta Co., VA. She was born ca 1834/35 in Virginia. I don't know her maiden name. They moved to Barbour Co., VA (now WV) in the late 1850's and were listed there on the 1860 census, though I was lucky to find them for their name was spelled "Helsley" on that record, but it is clearly them. Brother James L. Hensley was nearby, and also spelled "Helsley." It is interesting that their brother Enoch had been listed back on the 1850 census with that same odd spelling in Lewis Co., VA (now WV). Coincidence? Probably. John and James were the only Hensleys (or Helsleys) in Barbour County in 1860.
By ca 1866 they had moved to McLean Co., IL. I don't know what drew them there. They are listed on the 1870 census in McLean. Other Hensleys were listed there too, but not in the same township, and no known relationship.
They were still in McLean for the 1880 census.

George W. Hensley was born ca 1830/31 (per
age on 1850 census) in Rockingham Co., VA. He seems to be with his parents for the 1840 census, aged 5-9 (1830/35). He was with them in 1850 in Augusta ("Geo W. Jr." age 19). I wasn't able to find George anywhere on the 1860 census. He didn't seem to be in Augusta that year, nor in Barbour Co., VA (now WV) with his brothers James and John, or in Wood Co., VA (now WV) with brother Enoch. Nor was he in Ritchie Co., VA (now WV) where his soon to be wife was living at the time. George W. Hensley married Lydia A. Sharpnack in the 1860's. The location of the marriage is unknown. She was in Ritchie Co., VA (now WV) with her parents (John & Hannah) on the 1860 census. By 1870 the Hensleys and Sharpnacks were all in Washington Co., OH. They are on the 1870 census in Washington Co., OH with Lydia's mother, now widowed.
They were still in Washington Co., OH for the 1880 census.

James L. Hensley was born ca 1832/33 (per
age on the 1850 census) in Rockingham Co., VA. He was apparently home
with his parents in 1840 aged under 5 (c1835/40), which is not a
perfect fit, but probably him. He was home in 1850 ("Jas L." age 17). Jan Hensley tells me that Dr. James L. Hensley's biography contains a lot of information on him. I have not seen it yet. James L. Hensley married Eliza J. (---) before ca 1854, probably in Augusta Co., VA (or perhaps in Barbour Co., VA (now WV)). I don't know her maiden name. They moved to Barbour Co., VA (now WV) at some point in the 1850's. They are listed there on the 1860 census close to brother John, both families listed as "Helsley" instead of "Hensley" for some reason.
By 1870 they had moved a few counties westwards to Mason Co., WV and are listed there on that census.
Eliza J. (---) Hensley died at some point in the 1870's. James L. Hensley married Catherine (---) sometime in the 1870's. She was previously married to a Mr. Bumgarner. They are still in Mason for the 1880 census.
