I (Marty Grant) am not closely related to Amos Hensley as far as I know. Amos Hensley was born ca 1802/03 in Buncombe Co, NC (in the area that later became Yancey Co, NC in 1833, and finally Madison County in 1851). Records seem to show that Amos was a son of Colbert Hensley and Elizabeth Stanton. The evidence for this is not primary, or even secondary, but it may be correct. One of the children of Amos' brother Hickman M. Hensley (Andrew, I think) filed for Indian claims, and in the application listed his father as Hickman, and grandfather as Colbert Hensley. He also stated that his father Hickman had brothers named "Amos" and "John". I don't have copies of this record, so can't vouch for it at this time, but it seems genuine, I'm just not sure of the details. Census analysis also supports Amos being Colbert's child. Since I'm not sure of the accuracy of the Indian claim records, I'll try to back up the connection between Amos and Colbert in other ways, especially with census analysis. Amos would have been approximately 7 years old in 1810, so if he was with his parents then (as he should have been), he would be listed in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1800/10). In 1810 there were several Hensley households in Buncombe with at least one male under age 10 (born ca 1800/10). One of these might be parents of Amos Hensley: James Hensley (c1780), John Hensley (c1765/74), Washington Hensley (1774/84), James Hensley (bef 1755), Benjamin Hensley (c1790), Berry Hensley (c1783), Henry Hensley (c1781), Colbert Hensley (c1760/65), and Lewis Hensley (c1784/90). Notice that Colbert is one of the suspects. In 1820, there were only four Hensley households with at least one male age 10-15 (c1804/10), which might be parents of Amos Hensley, however it should be noted that Colbert Hensley was not listed in 1820: James Hensley (c1780), John Hensley (c1794/1800), Benjamin Hensley (c1790), and Berry Hensley (c1783). Since Amos might have been in the age 16-25 (c1794/1804) category in 1820 instead, that adds one more possibility: Harry Hensley Sr (bef 1755). I haven't located Colbert in 1820, so wherever he was, Amos probably was as well. I suspect they were all in Greene Co, TN (which census was lost for 1820). Amos Hensley married Arty Norton on 16 Oct 1825 in Greene Co, TN. The marriage bond was dated 11 Oct 1825 Arty was born ca 1805/06 in NC, presumably in Buncombe (now Madison) County. Her parents are David Norton and Sarah Shelton. (I dont know the proof of her father being David, but her mother Sarah was living with Arty in 1870.) They must not have liked Greene County, TN, for they returned to NC shortly after marriage. Amos Hensley was listed in Buncombe County, NC for the 1830 census. Amos and Arty were listed on the 1880 census in Madison Co, NC in Shelton Laurel Township: Amos Hensley 76, NC-NC-VA, Artie M. 72, NC-NC-SC. I have no additional data on the family, beyond this point. One of Amos' sons married a daughter of Hickman M. Hensley, possibly indicating they were brothers, (which I think they were). |

Jacob Hensley was born ca 1825/26 in Buncombe
Co, NC (now Madison Co, NC). He was apparently home with his parents for
the 1830 and 1840 census, and definitely with them 1850. For some reason, in 1850, Jacob was listed after all the other children. Usually someone listed at the end like that means they aren't a child in that family, but a boarder, or relative residing with them. However, it may not mean anything other than the census taker forgot to write him down in order. Jacob Hensley married his first cousin Sarah M. Hensley on 1 Dec 1851 in Madison Co, NC. She was a daughter of Hickman M. Hensley, and therefore, probably Jacob's 1st cousin. Unknown Son (c1825/30). Amos and Arty had an
apparent son this age with them for the 1840 census, but he was not with
them back in 1830. This might indicate he was born in the year 1830, but
after the census taker came around. He was not home with them for the
1850 census, so had married or died by then. One possibility for this child is George Hensley (c1826) who married Glumdalclitch Franklin. He was only 2 pages from Amos for the 1850 census. Another possibility, based only on age is another George Hensley (c1826). Some other possibilities: William K. Hensley (c1827), or William H. Hensley (c1828), and John Hensley (c1829). I don't know if any of the above are the ones. |

Matthew Hensley was born ca 1834/35 in
Yancey (now Madison) Co, NC. He was apparently home with his parents for
the 1840 census, and with them for sure in 1850. Matthew married Hannah Johnson on 2 Dec 1852 in Madison Co, NC. She was a child of John and Elizabeth Johnson, who were listed near Amos Hensley in 1850 (five houses away). Elizabeth Hensley was born ca 1836/37 in
Yancey (now Madison) Co, NC. She was apparently home with her parents
for the 1840 census, and with them for sure in 1850. Elizabeth married George Cutshall on 8 Feb 1855 in Greene Co, TN. They are listed on the 1860 census in Madison Co., NC: George Cutslow (sic) 26 TN, Elizabeth 26 NC, Amos 4 NC, Arty M. 1 NC. They were in Madison for the 1870 census next to Elizabeths parents in Township No. 2: George Cutshall 36 TN, Elizabeth 35 NC, Amos 13, Arty Miney 11, Henry 4, Woodard 3, Gideon 8/12 born Oct. was born ca 1838/39 in Yancey (now Madison) Co, NC. She was
apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census, and with them for
sure in 1850. Jane was not with her parents in 1860, so probably had married or died by then. I didn't find a marriage record for a Jane Hensley in Madison County, NC in that timeframe, nor in Greene Co, TN (where her sister Elizabeth married in 1855). |
