I (Marty Grant) am not related to William H. Hensley as far as I know.

William H. Hensley was born ca 1827/28 in Buncombe Co, NC (now Yancey Co, NC).

I strongly suspect that William is a son of Jesse and Matilda Hensley. He was two houses from them in 1850, and they did have an apparent son his age per the 1830 and 1840 census, who is otherwise unaccounted for.

Since I have no direct evidence that William belongs to Jesse Hensley's family, I've done some census analysis to see if there are any other possibilities. William would have presumably been with his parents for the 1830 census, in the "under 5" age group (born ca 1825/30), and with them in 1840, in the 10-14 age group (ca 1825/30).

On the 1830 census, there were several Hensley households in Buncombe with a male under 5, or born ca 1825/30, however, most of these are already proven to be someone else, but for the sake of completeness, here are the possibilities (if it says "unlikely" afterwards, that means the "under 5" males are already identified as someone other than William, or the family had another proven son named "William"). Suspects from 1830 are: Joab Hensley (c1796) (unlikely), Abishai Hensley (c1789) (unlikely), Lewis Hensley (c1784/90)Bannister Hensley (c1811), Pleasant Hensley (c1800), Samuel Hensley (c1800), Berry Hensley (c1783) (unlikely), Charles Hensley (c1796) (unlikely), John Hensley (c1794/1800), Jesse Hensley (c1804) (* My choice for William's father *), Hickman Hensley (c1804), Amos Hensley (c1803) (unlikely), James Hensley (c1795/1800).

The above list shows many possibilities. The 1840 census doesn't really help narrow down the list any.

In 1840 Yancey County, there were only a few Hensley households with a male in the 10-14 age group, (born ca 1825/30), including Silas A. Hensley (c1816), Amos Hensley (c1803), Charles Hensley (c1796) (unlikely), William A. Hensley (1798), Berry Hensley (c1783), James Hensley (c1795/1800), Berry R. Hensley (c1802) (unlikely), and Samuel Hensley (c1805).

Though I say that I think William belongs to Jesse Hensley, you'll notice that Jesse isn't in the list above, as in 1840 he had no males age 10-14 with him, but he did have an "extra" male age 5-9 (c1830/35), and his two proven daughters, (also born in the late 1820's) were also enumerated in the 5-9 age group, suggesting some problems with his census record. This means he is still a suspect based on the 1840 census as well.

William H. Hensley married Kissiah --- ca 1848 or so in Yancey Co, NC. I don't know what her maiden name might be.

William and Kissiah and one child were listed on the 1850 census in Yancey County. They were two houses from Jesse Hensley and seven houses from Berry Hensley. William's neighbors on either side were William B. Banks and family, and Grandison Shepherd and family.

I did not find William Hensley and family on the 1860 census, neither in Yancey or Madison County, NC nor in TN or KY where many other Hensley's from this region had moved. I found a Spruice (Sprouse) family in 1860 Yancey that is a perfect match for this family, so I think it is them, though I don't know why the surname was different. They were next door to Jesse Hensley and Squire Hensley (son of Dorcas).

William died sometime before 1870, for in that year Kesiah was listed as head of household in Yancey Co, NC. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Children

William and Kissiah had one child by 1850, and probably others afterward. Since I have no additional data on them at this time, I will not create individual sections for the children here.
