I (Marty Grant) am not related to Samuel Hensley as far as I know.
Samuel Hensley was born ca 1799/1800 in Buncombe Co, NC (now Yancey Co, NC). This approximate birth year is based on his age on the 1850 census (age 50). In 1860, he was listed as age 63 or born ca 1796/97. I don't know which is more accurate. However, the 1830 and 1840 census records give him a ca 1790/1800 birth range, so it could be either or neither approximate birth year, but I'd say he wasn't born in the year 1800, unless it was very early in the year.
I don't know who Samuel's parents might have been. Many list him as a child of James Hensley and Nancy Anderson, however this seems highly unlikely. First of all, I can see why some might think this to be true, mainly because Samuel was not too far from James on the 1830 census. Samuel moved to Clay Co, KY and James followed later. This does show they were probably related, but does not prove they were his parents. Those are the "pros", however the cons are major. First, James and Nancy didn't marry until ca 1800/1805. Nancy was only 12 years old in 1800, so couldn't be Samuel's mother. Also, the 1810 and 1820 census records for James Hensley show no male child who was Samuel's age. It is possible that James was married prior to Nancy Anderson, and that Samuel was from that first marriage, and raised by other relatives. This is just a wild guess though. (Also see Pleasant Hensley who many also list as a child of James, and brother to Samuel).
Presumably, Samuel would have been at home with his parents for the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census.
For the 1800 census, Samuel Hensley would have been anywhere from a few days old to approximately 3 years old, so he would have been enumerated in the "Under 10" age group (born ca 1790/1800). The 1800 Buncombe Co, NC census shows a total of six Hensley households, with five of them having a male his age, including: Colbert Hensley (1760/65), Henry Hensley (bef 1755), Hickman Hensley (1759), John Hensley (1765/74), and Washington Hensley (1774/84). This does not mean that one of the above has to be his father, but it is a place to start. It is also possible that Samuel was born later in 1800, so not yet born when the census taker came around, but for various reasons, I don't think this was the case.
For the 1810 census, Samuel Hensley would have been anywhere from 10 to approximately 13 years old, so presumably enumerated in the 10-15 age group (c1794/1800). There were several Hensley households in 1810 Buncombe County with a male this age, including: Henry Hensley (bef 1755), John Hensley (1765/74), Washington Hensley (1774/84), and Colbert Hensley (1760/65).
For the 1820 census, Samuel would have been approximately 20 to 23 years old, so should be enumerated in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1794/1804). In 1820 Buncombe, only Henry Hensley Sr had an apparent son age 16-25 (and he had three of them). For various reasons, I think I already know who those children were, and that none of them was Samuel.
Samuel Hensley married Margaret --- ca 1820/25 in Buncombe Co, NC (now Yancey Co, NC). I don't know what her maiden name might have been. Margaret was born ca 1799/1800 in NC, perhaps also in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC, but I don't know if that is correct.
Samuel Hensley was listed on the 1830 census in Buncombe County, clearly in the part that would become Yancey County in 1833. He was just 2 houses from "J. B. Hensley", who might be James B. Hensley (c1805) or perhaps not. He was 14 houses from a clutch of Hensley's including James Hensley (c1780), Pleasant Hensley (c1799) and "B. Hensley" (possibly Blasengim Hensley). Samuel's next door neighbors in 1830 were Jos. Callahan and J. Radford. Samuel seemed to have a daughter born ca 1815/20 with him in 1830. If she were his, then that predates his supposed ca 1820/25 marriage to Margaret. Of course, this could be a niece, or perhaps Margaret had a child from a previous marriage, or perhaps Samuel and Margaret did marry earlier than I thought.

Yancey County was formed in 1833 from part of Buncombe County, including where most of the Hensleys lived.
Samuel Hensley and family left Yancey Co, NC for Clay Co, KY ca 1835/36.
Samuel Hensley was listed on the 1836 tax list for Clay Co, KY and taxed for 1 white male over 21 (himself) and for 1 horse. (Thanks to Laura Schreibman for the Kentucky Tax Lists).
Samuel was also listed on the 1837 tax list, and taxed for 1 white male over 21. (Thanks to Laura Schreibman for the Kentucky Tax Lists).
In 1838, Samuel was again listed on the Clay Co, KY tax list, and taxed for 1 white male over 21, and for 1 horse. (Thanks to Laura Schreibman for the Kentucky Tax Lists).
In 1840, Samuel was again listed on the Clay Co, KY tax list, and taxed for 1 white male over 21, and for 1 horse. (Thanks to Laura Schreibman for the Kentucky Tax Lists).
Samuel Hensley was listed on the 1840 census in Clay Co, KY. There was a second Samuel Hensley listed two pages away, but only one Samuel on the tax lists up to that point, so I don't know who the other one was.

For some reason, Samuel Hensley was not listed on the 1841, 1842, 1843, and 1844 tax lists in Clay Co, KY. This may indicate he had moved away temporarily. I think he was in Breathitt Co, KY during those years, as at least one of his children was born in that county in that timeframe. (Thanks to Laura Schreibman for the Kentucky Tax Lists).
Samuel was back in Clay Co, KY for the 1846 tax list, and taxed for 30 acres on Bent Fork, and 1 white male over 21. (Thanks to Laura Schreibman for the Kentucky Tax Lists).
On the 1847 Clay Co, KY Tax list there were two Samuel's listed. One as just Samuel, the other as "Jr". The first one was taxed for 1 white male over 21 and 1 horse. "Jr" was taxed for 50 acres on Beach Fork, 1 white male over 21 and 1 horse. At present, I don't know who Samuel "Jr" was. (Thanks to Laura Schreibman for the Kentucky Tax Lists).
On the 1848 Clay Co, KY Tax List, only Samuel "Jr" was listed, and as before, was taxed for 50 acres on Beach Fork, 1 white male over 21 and 1 horse. (Thanks to Laura Schreibman for the Kentucky Tax Lists).
For the 1849 Clay Co, KY Tax list, two Samuel's were listed, though both simply as "Samuel Hensley". The first was taxed for 1 white male over 21, the second for 50 acres on Bush Fork and for 1 white male over 21 (This is probably "Jr"). (Thanks to Laura Schreibman for the Kentucky Tax Lists).
For the 1850 Clay Co, KY Tax list, there was "Samuel Hensley" and "S. Hensley". The first was taxed for 1 white male over 21 and 1 horse, the second for 50 acres on Beach Fork and for 1 white male over 21 and 1 horse. (This is probably "Jr"). (Thanks to Laura Schreibman for the Kentucky Tax Lists).
Although the 1850 tax list shows there were still two Samuel Hensley's in Clay Co, KY, the 1850 census only shows one, and that is the Samuel Hensley (c1800) under study here. If there was another Samuel Hensley present, I did not find him. Samuel (1800) had a large household in 1850, including several Bale children. I don't know how they were related.

Samuel Hensley was listed on the 1851 tax list in Clay Co, KY and taxed for 1 white male over 21, and for 2 horses. The "other" Samuel from the 1850 tax list was not listed this year. (Thanks to Laura Schreibman for the Kentucky Tax Lists).
Samuel Hensley was not listed on any subsequent tax lists in Clay Co, KY, so that probably means he moved away ca 1851/1852. We know he was in Breathitt Co, KY by 1860, so perhaps he moved there about this time. There was another Samuel Hensley in Clay Co, KY for the 1860 census. I haven't followed up on him yet.
Samuel's wife Margaret must have died in the 1850's, for on the 1860 census his wife was listed as Sarah, so unless her name was "Sarah Margaret", this means he remarried in the 1850-1860 timeframe, either in Clay or Breathitt Co, KY.
Samuel Hensley and family were listed on the 1860 census in Breathitt Co, KY on page 123: Samuel Hensly age 63 born NC, Sarah-65 TN, Adamraker-17 born Clay Co, KY, Margaret-14 born Breathitt Co, KY, Samuel BALL-14 born Breathitt Co. (From "Hensley Households" by Laura Schreibman).
I have no data on the family beyond this point.
Samuel and Margaret had several children per the 1830 through 1860 census records. There is some apparent mismatches between Samuel's 1830, 1840 and 1850 census records, regarding the ages of certain children, so this analysis might be skewed somewhat.
Unknown Daughter (1815/20). Samuel Hensley had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20), and with him in 1840 (age 20-29, born ca 1810/20). She was not with him for the 1850 census, so probably had married or died by then, in the 1840/1850 timeframe, in either Clay or Breathitt Co, KY.
Unknown Daughter (1820/25). Samuel Hensley had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), and not with him in 1840, unless she was listed as age 20-29, born ca 1810/20, for which I think she was. This puts her birth at ca 1820. She was not with him for the 1850 census, so probably had married or died by then, in the 1840/1850 timeframe, in either Clay or Breathitt Co, KY.
Unknown Son (1820/25). Samuel Hensley had an apparent son this age with him in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25) and with him in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25), but gone by 1850.
Barbary Hensley was born ca 1824/25 in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. She was apparently with her parents for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), and apparently with them in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30), and with them for sure in 1850.
She was not with her parents in 1860, so probably married or died in the 1850/60 timeframe, in either Clay or Breathitt Co, KY.
Unknown Son (1825/30). Samuel Hensley had an apparent son this age with him in 1830 (age 0-4, born ca 1825/30) but not with him in 1840.
Charles W. Hensley was born ca 1828/29 (or ca 1834/35) in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. He was apparently with his parents for the 1830 census (age 0-4, born ca 1825/30), and apparently not with them in 1840, unless of course his age is wrong. In 1840, they did have a male age 5-9 (ca 1830/35) who could be him. He was with his parents in 1850, listed as age 21 (born ca 1828/29).
Charles Hensley married Fanny --- ca 1855 in Clay Co, KY. I don't know her maiden name.
They were listed on the 1860 census in Clay Co, KY just two houses from Squire Hensley, son of Levi Hensley (c1816).

I have no data on them after this point.
Wesley M. C. Hensley was born ca 1831/32 in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. He was apparently with his parents for the 1840 census, (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35), and with them in 1850.
Wesley Hensley married Eliza Mappin on 20 Nov 1854 in Clay Co, KY.
Wesley and Eliza were listed on the 1860 census in Clay Co, KY, but I don't have the listing yet.
Sarah Hensley was born ca 1836/37 in Yancey Co, NC (born "NC" per 1850 census), though it seems likely that they were already in KY by 1836, so either her birth place, or birth date is in error. She was apparently with her parents for the 1840 census, (age 0-4, born ca 1835/40), and with them in 1850.
She was not home with them in 1860, so probably married or died in the 1850/1860 timeframe, in either Clay or Breathitt Co, KY.
Unknown Son (1835/40). Samuel Hensley had an apparent son this age with him in 1840 (age 0-4, born ca 1835/40) but not with him in 1850.
Unknown Son (1835/40). Samuel Hensley had an apparent son this age with him in 1840 (age 0-4, born ca 1835/40) but not with him in 1850.
Unknown Son (1835/40). Samuel Hensley had an apparent son this age with him in 1840 (age 0-4, born ca 1835/40) but not with him in 1850.
Adamson Hensley was born ca 1840/41 in Clay Co, KY. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census (listed as "Adamson") and in 1860 (listed as "Adamraker").
Margaret Hensley was born ca 1844/45 in Breathitt Co, KY. She was home with his parents for the 1850 census and listed twice in fact, (either a duplicate, or there were two Margaret's age 5 residing there). She was with her parents in 1860 as well (only one Margaret this time).
Martha Hensley was born ca 1845/46 in Clay Co, KY. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census but gone by 1860. She might be a grandchild instead of their child, but I don't know for sure.
Elizabeth Hensley was born ca 1845/46 in Clay Co, KY. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census but gone by 1860. She might be a grandchild instead of their child, but I don't know for sure.
There was an Elizabeth Hensley age 16 in 1860 Breathitt Co, KY. Her birth place was listed as Harlan County. She was with John Rose family. This probably isn't the same Elizabeth, due to the birth place.
Sarah Hensley was born ca 1850 in Clay Co, KY. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census but gone by 1860. She might be a grandchild instead of their child, but I don't know for sure. However, they already had an apparent daughter named "Sarah", so it seems likely this one wasn't their daughter.
