I (Marty Grant) am not related to George Hensley as far as I know.

George Hensley was born ca 1825/26 in Buncombe (later Yancey, now Madison) Co, NC.

First of all, there were several other George Hensley's in Yancey Co, NC almost exactly the same age as this George, so there is the distinct possibility of getting them confused. They were George W. Hensley (c1826), probably a son of Berry Hensley; and George Hensley (c1825-1847) and George Hensley (c1827) son of Charles Hensley. and lastly, an older George W. Hensley (c1809). With all of these (and who knows how many others), there is more than a good chance to get their records mixed up.

I don't know who George's parents were, but there are only a few suspects to choose from. Others list him as a son of Amos Hensley and Arty Norton. I don't know what evidence there is of that, but it fits based on some bits of circumstantial evidence.

Presumably, George would have been home with his parents for the 1830 and 1840 census.

In 1830 George would have been about 4 years old, so he should have been enumerated in the "under 5" age group (born ca 1825/30). There were several Hensley households in 1830 Buncombe County, NC that had males that age, but only a few where they aren't already accounted for: Lewis Hensley (c1784/90); Bannister Hensley (c1811); Pleasant Hensley (c1800)Samuel Hensley (c1800); Berry Hensley (c1783); Charles Hensley (c1796)John Hensley (c1794/1800); Jesse Hensley (c1804); Hickman M. Hensley (c1804); and James Hensley (c1795/1800).

Some of the above can be eliminated due to them already having a proven (or strongly suspected) son named "George" different than this one under study here. That removes Lewis, Pleasant, Berry, Charles, and Jesse, leaving only Bannister, Samuel, John, Hickman and James as suspects from 1830.

In 1840, George would have been about 14 years old, so he should have been in the age 10-14 age group (born ca 1825/30). There were several Hensley households in 1840 Yancey County that had a male this age. Some can be eliminated for various reasons, leaving these: Silas A. Hensley (c1816); Amos Hensley (c1803); William A. Hensley (1798); and James Hensley (c1795/1800).

Unfortunately, the census analysis does not narrow down the possibilities enough to draw any conclusions.

George Hensley married Glumdalclitch --- ca 1840/46 in Yancey Co, NC. This is a very unusual name, and descendants claim there was an Indian connection somewhere, so perhaps with her.

I have her maiden name listed as "Franklin". I don't know what the evidence for this is, so I'm leaving it off for now. George did later marry a Franklin as a second wife, supposedly a sister to the first wife. The second wife (Troy Franklin) was listed just a few houses from George in 1850. At that time, Troy (age 12) was residing with her widowed mother (or single mother) Nancy Franklin, age 48. Nancy was certainly old enough to be the mother of Glumdaclitch as well.

George Hensley and family were listed on the 1850 census in Yancey County, just a few houses from Beverly Hensley, and a few more from Amos Hensley (a strong suspect for George's father). George's next door neighbors were John Chandley and William King. Jacob (c1780) and Margaret Bowman (c1782) were residing with George and family in 1850. I don't know how (or if) they were related. These could be Glumdalclitch's parents, or her Grandparents, or George's grandparents, or parents. Perhaps Margaret was George's mother, and Jacob Bowman was his step-father.

Jacob Bowman was listed on the 1840 census in Yancey County (listed twice in fact), next door to Hickman Hensley, a possible brother of George Hensley. Jacob's household only consisted of himself and his wife. There were no other family members present, so George nor Glumdalclitch seem to be with them in 1840, suggesting they are not the parents of either one.

I didn't find George and family on the 1860 census. The records on George get confusing at this point. I've heard and read that George left his wife and ran off with her sister. Records seem to support this, but they must have divorced, because he remarried in 1870, yet Glumdalclitch was still living at that time.

I didn't find George in 1860, but he may have been in Arkansas since one of his children was born there ca 1860/61. I have transcribed the 1860 census for Hensleys in Arkansas and did not find George listed there that year.

For the 1870 census, George and wife Tray (or Troy) were listed in Greene Co, TN census. Glumdalclitch was listed in Yancey Co, NC in 1870. ** I don't have the full record on either of these census yet, so will have to get those to include here.

Apparently, George and family later moved to Wright Co, MO where he and Troy both died. He in 1880, she in 1878. I don't have documentation for these death dates yet.

In 1880, Glumdalclitch was in Madison Co, NC, in Shelton Laurel Township. Her marital status showed "Divorced". ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Children

George and Glumdaclitch and George and Troy had several children. I have no additional data on any of them yet, so they will not get their own sections here until more data is located.
