John Hensley was born 5 Mar 1818 per his tombstone.
That agrees with his age on the 1850 census, but not the rest, though
they are only off a little bit. He was born in Rockingham Co., VA
(presumably). John is a proven child of Benjamin Hensley (c1790) and Nelly Meadows, as named in estate records dated 1896. John has a 1st cousin also named John (c1820) who is a son of James Hensley (c1781). There is some potential for mixing them up, but I think I have them pretty straight. John would have been about two years old for the 1820 census. His father Benjamin had two boys under 10 (born ca 1810/20) living with him. One of those is certainly John. John would have been about 12 years old by the time of the 1830 census. Benjamin Hensley (c1790) had two boys aged 10-14 (born ca 1815/20) with him in 1830 in Rockingham. John would have been about 22 years old for the 1840 census so he should be in the 20-29 age group (born ca 1810/20). Benjamin (c1790) had one young man that age with him on that census. On 17 Nov 1840 John Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Rockingham to marry Rebecca J. Smith. She was born 13 Jun 1824 (per tombstone), presumably in Rockingham County. I don't know who her parents are. John and Rebecca are listed on the 1850 census in Rockingham next door to his parents.
They are still in Rockingham for the 1860 census. The family stretches across two pages. When it begins on the next page the surname is spelled "Hendley."
They are still in Rockingham for the 1870 census. John's father was listed as head of household.
They were on the 1880 census in Rockingham.
John Hensley died on 2 Feb 1892 and is buried at the Ed Hensley Cemetery in Rockingham County. Rebecca Smith Hensley died on 17 Sep 1902 and is buried by John. |
