James Hensley was born ca 1780/81 per his age on the 1850
census (69). He was born in Rockingham Co., VA
(presumably). James is a proven son of Mary Hensley (bef 1765) of Rockingham. It isn't clear who her husband was, or if she was a single mother instead. The 1790 and 1800 censuses are lost for Rockingham. Mary Hensley is listed on the 1801 tax list in Rockingham Co., VA and has one male over 16 with her (not named). That is probably James who was about 20 then. On 17 Dec 1802 James Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Rockingham to marry Elizabeth Maden, daughter of Dosiah Hall, formerly Maden. Mary Hensley, mother of James stated he was 21. Elizabeth Maiden was born ca 1784/85 per her age on the 1850 census (65). Her tombstone lists 1785 as her birth year, but the month and day weren't given. I have parents listed for her, but I don't know the source for the information. Her marriage bond lists her mother as Dosiah Hall, formerly Maden who gives permission for her daughter to marry. Docia Hall, widow of James Maiden filed a pension application (# W 5098) for her late husband's Revolutionary War Service. It shows her second husband was Bazel Hall. Children of James Hensley and Elizabeth
Maiden.
The 1850 census proves three children: John, Eliza and Wesley Hensley. Robert,
William and James Hensley are their neighbors in 1840 and 1850 and are very
likely their sons. Robert is proven by his own marriage bond. They also have several daughters. One (Mary) is
proven by her marriage record. I don't know if
there is a Will or any estate records that prove James's children, but
I have a list based on census analysis and circumstantial evidence.
Unfortunately they haven't been found on the 1830 census so that makes
census analysis incomplete, and it is already an in-exact science.
James's brother Benjamin Hensley had several children, but his are
proven by Estate records, leaving several unknown Hensleys in the
county, most of whom are probably James's children.
There were several female Hensleys who married in Rockingham before 1850. Those who aren't proven to be Benjamin's children are almost certainly James's, though there could be exceptions.

Mary Hensley was born ca 1805/06 per her age
on the 1850 census (44). She was born in Rockingham Co., VA
presumably. She seems to be with her parents for the 1810 census aged
under 10 (ca 1800/10). She was still home in 1820 aged 10-15 (born ca
1804/10). On 21 Sep 1822 John Samuels obtained a marriage bond in Rockingham Co., VA to marry Polly Hensley, daughter of James Hensley. James was the bondsman also. ("Polly" is a common nickname for "Mary") They are on the 1830 census in Rockingham Co., VA and in neighboring Page Co., VA for the 1840 and 1850 census. Mary Hensley Samuels died in the 1850's for John was remarried by 1860 and living in Scott Co., IL at that time. I found a marriage record dated 17 Sep 1855 in Cass Co., IL for a John Samuels and Eliza Finny. This could be them. |

on the 1850 census (30). He was home with his parents in 1820 aged
under 10 (born ca 1810/20). The 1830 census entry is missing, but he
was still home in 1840 aged 15-19 (c1820/25). He was home with his
parents in 1850 ("John" age 30). John Hensley married Viranda E. Nicholson on -- --- 1850 (month and day not given) in neighboring Madison Co., VA. Since he was home and unmarried in June 1850, the marriage must have been just after the census but before the end of the year. John is listed on the 1860 census next to his brother Wesley in Rockingham County.

Eliza A. Hensley was born 7 Apr 1827 (per
tombstone), presumably in Rockingham Co., VA. She was seemingly with
her parents for the 1840 census, aged 10-14 (born ca 1825/30). She was
with them in 1850 ("Eliza" age 23) and in 1860 ("Eliza A." age 33).
I was unable to locate her on the 1870 or 1880 census. She died on 16 Jun 1887 according to her tombstone at the Hensley Community Cemetery in Rockingham County. I don't know where she was living in the 23 years between her parents deaths and her own. I wonder if perhaps the tombstone was read incorrectly and it should say 1867 instead of 1887? |

Wesley A. Hensley was born ca 1828/29 per
his age on the 1850 census (21). He was apparently home with his
parents for the 1840 census, aged 10-14 (born ca 1825/30). He was home
with them in 1850 ("Wesley" age 21). On or about 4 Apr 1850 Wesley Hensley married Ellen Nichols in Rockingham Co., VA. Frances Ellen Nichols was born ca 1827/28, presumably in Rockingham. I don't know who her parents were. The 1850 census was "as of" 1 Jun 1850, but Wesley was still home with his parents then with no wife living there. Perhaps he didn't marry until after that, or perhaps she should have been listed with him in 1850 but wasn't. They are listed on the 1860 census in Rockingham next to brother John and a few houses from Wesley's parents.
They are near various relatives on the 1870 census.
They are in neighboring Page Co., VA for the 1880 census.
I don't know when or where Wesley and wife Ellen died, though obviously after 1880. |
