James T. Hensley was born ca 1816/17 per his age on the 1850
census (33). This agrees with his 1870 entry (53) and his 1880 entry
(63). He was born in Rockingham Co., VA
(presumably). I have no direct proof but I think James is a son of James Hensley (c1781) and Elizabeth Maiden. The only other possibility is Benjamin Hensley (c1790). Benjamin had a proven son James Hensley (c1820). Since both of the James Hensleys were in Rockingham at the same time and were close in age, it is possible I've mixed them up. However, James (c1817) was next door to James (c1781) in 1850 and that does make it seem more likely they are father and son. The other James (1820) was just three houses from Benjamin (c1790) in 1850, so that adds up as well. James would have been about three years old by the time of the 1820 census. Benjamin Hensley (c1790) had two boys under 10 and James Hensley (c1781) had three. No other Hensleys were listed in Rockingham County. James Hensley would have been about 13 for the 1830 census so he should be in the 10-14 age group (born ca 1810/1815). Benjamin (c1790) was listed in Rockingham with two sons that age. James wasn't listed in 1830 for some reason. On 21 Aug 1837 James Hensley Jr. married Amanda Breeding in neighboring Page Co., VA. Amanda M. Breeden was born ca 1824/25 (per her age on the 1850 census of 25). I don't know who her parents are. She could be a sister to Louisa J. Breeden who married James's brother Robert B. Hensley (1822). They are listed on the 1840 census in Rockingham next door to his parents on one side and Jonathan Breeden on the other.
